This uniQue survey serves as a snapshot of Sheffield’s music sector in 2015; it aims to get a sense of the scale of the sector and its activities, it provides a benchmark for future years and for comparison with other music cities and it also signposts potential areas for further research to find out more about what music means for our city. With music one of Sheffield’s strongest identifiers, this report provides for the first time a snapshot of Sheffield’s music sector. Compiled by the team at Sensoria from surveys, one-to-one interviews, desk research and industry data, it begins to ask how we can bring current talent from under the radar and enable growth in a time of harsh economic realities, establish our talent on a world stage and pave the way for the next generation of musicians. As we start to plan the Year of Making in 2016, this is the time to stand up, publish our findings and start with music for, as one interviewee states, the challenge is to “get known outside the city” – this report is the start of that process. • Bands, musicians and composers Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City & Cultural Engagement, • Managers/management companies University of Sheffield. • Recording studios • Number of artists/practitioners/businesses • Rehearsal facilities in the South Yorkshire region. • Promoters • Estimate of levels of employment/numbers • Festivals engaged in the music sector. • Venues • Social media reach. • Journalists and listings offers • Online and digital infrastructure, website • Agents and bookers • PR, pluggers, sync agents and other music industry services • Courses and education facilities We have made proposals for several areas of future research including exploring music education provision, the classical music sector and public engagement with music, especially live music.

  • Popular Music, Psychogeography, Place Identity and Tourism: the Case of Sheffield
SHEFFIELD 1 Popular music, Psychogeography, Place Identity and Tourism: The case of Sheffield Dr Philip Long, Bournemouth University Abstract Tourism and cultural agencies in some English provincial cities are promoting their popular music ‘heritage’ and, in some cases, contemporary musicians through the packaging of trails, sites, ‘iconic’ venues and festivals. This paper focuses on the case of Sheffield, a ‘post- industrial’ northern English city which is drawing on its associations with musicians past and present in seeking to attract tourists. The paper is based on interviews with, among others, recording artists, promoters, producers and venue managers, along with reflective observational and documentary data. Theoretical remarks are made on the representations of popular musicians through cultural tourism strategies, programmes and products and also on the ways in which musicians convey a ‘psychogeographical’ sense of place in the ‘soundscape’ of the city. Keywords: Music tourism, city identity, music scenes, Psychogeography Dr Philip Long Head of Tourism Academic Group Bournemouth University Talbot Campus Poole, BH12 5BB UK [email protected] SHEFFIELD 2 Popular music, Psychogeography, Place Identity and Tourism: The case of Sheffield Introduction: The sounds of the city Some ‘world’ cities such as Rome, Paris, New York, Rio de Janeiro and London feature in the lyrics of popular songs that are widely familiar. Senses of local and national ‘character’ are conveyed through the compositions and instrumentation that evoke images and emotions stereotypically associated with such cities and nations. Examples include the sound of accordions and the romantic compositions that feature Paris, Samba and Bossa Nova rhythms referring to Rio de Janeiro, and the jazz swing sounds of New York City.
