Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis compares Umbria before and after the Roman conquest in order to assess the impact of the imposition of Roman control over this area of central Italy. There are four sections specifically on Umbria and two more general chapters of introduction and conclusion. The introductory chapter examines the most important issues for the history of the Italian regions in this period and the extent to which they are relevant to Umbria, given the type of evidence that survives. The chapter focuses on the concept of state formation, and the information about it provided by evidence for urbanisation, coinage, and the creation of treaties. The second chapter looks at the archaeological and other available evidence for the history of Umbria before the Roman conquest, and maps the beginnings of the formation of the state through the growth in social complexity, urbanisation and the emergence of cult places.

  • Palude Di Colfiorito Che 61 Rappresenta Un'eco Sistema Di Notevole Rilevanza

  • Variation of Tourist Flows in the Umbria Region After the September 26, 1997, Colfiorito (Central Italy) Earthquake
2518 VARIATION OF TOURIST FLOWS IN THE UMBRIA REGION AFTER THE SEPTEMBER 26, 1997, COLFIORITO (CENTRAL ITALY) EARTHQUAKE Mariella CALEFFI1, Fabrizio MERONI2, Anna MONTINI3, Roberto ZOBOLI4 And Gaetano ZONNO5 SUMMARY Vulnerability studies have been extensively developed in Italy starting form residential buildings, in order to preserve its rich architectural patrimony. This paper presents some results of a CNR project aiming at the definition of a model for the evaluation of socio-economic vulnerability to earthquakes. The Umbria-Marche region has been selected, as case study, due to the long sequence of earthquakes that shaken the area starting on September 26, 1997 and because is one of the most important historic areas of Central Italy. The first step was to define the criteria for quantifying the socio-economic vulnerability of the region. Socio-economic vulnerability is evaluated through a selected set of indicators including population density, housing conditions, the structure of local economy, artistic and historical sites, etc. The dataset includes data on 254 variables organised in 9 groups and 48 indicators that are elaborated at the municipality level for the two regions (338 municipalities). The economic evaluation of the impact of the 1997, Colfiorito (Central Italy) earthquake on the tourist flows in the Umbria region is discussed to illustrate one of the various possible uses of the vulnerability indicators. Before the 1997 earthquake, the annual arrivals in Assisi were about 550,000 (1996), compared to a total population of about 25,000 people living in Assisi. After the earthquake, the tourist arrivals in Assisi fell down drastically to 9,205 arrivals in October ‘97, i.e.

Analysis of seismological and geological observations for moderate size earthquakes: the Colfiorito Fault System (Central Apennines, Italy) Salvatore Barba & Roberto Basili Abstract To contribute to the understanding of the relationships between moderate earthquakes and the faults that are recognisable in the geological record, we analysed seismological and geological data related to the 1997-98 Umbria-Marche (Central Italy) earthquake swarm. The seismological recordings, collected by local networks, allowed accurate location of about 1000 events, whereas the geological field-observations provided a picture of the structural features and the ground-surface deformations. We also re-examined and utilised some already published data and results, mostly about the fault plane solutions and the geology. On the basis of earthquake locations, fault plane solutions, and geological mapping we explored the possible correlation between the earthquake causative fault-planes and the normal faults exposed in the area. Our results show that the two mainshocks that occurred on September 26, 1997 (MW=5.7 and MW=6.0) originated on the same structure reactivating at depth the Colfiorito normal faults. Both ruptures did not propagate up to the ground surface but triggered gravitational sliding that occurred along pre-existing fault scarps. The earthquake that occurred on October 14, 1997 (MW=5.6) originated on another fault-branch at a much shallower depth. In spite of the lower magnitude, this earthquake produced tectonic ruptures where the fault plane projects

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The mitogenome portrait of Umbria in Central Italy as depicted by contemporary inhabitants and pre‑Roman remains Alessandra Modi1,10, Hovirag Lancioni2,10*, Irene Cardinali2,10, Marco R. Here, we investigated the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation of 545 present-day Umbrians (with 198 entire mitogenomes) and 28 pre-Roman individuals (obtaining 19 ancient mtDNAs) excavated from the necropolis of Plestia. We found a rather homogeneous distribution of western Eurasian lineages across the region, with few notable exceptions. Contemporary inhabitants of the eastern part, delimited by the Tiber River and the Apennine Mountains, manifest a peculiar mitochondrial proximity to central-eastern Europeans, mainly due to haplogroups U4 and U5a, and an overrepresentation of J (30%) similar to the pre-Roman remains, also excavated in East Umbria. Local genetic continuities are further attested to by six terminal branches (H1e1, J1c3, J2b1, U2e2a, U8b1b1 and K1a4a) shared between ancient and modern mitogenomes. Eventually, we identifed multiple inputs from various population sources that likely shaped the mitochondrial gene pool of ancient Umbri over time, since early Neolithic, including gene fows with central-eastern Europe. This diachronic mtDNA portrait of Umbria fts well with the genome-wide population structure identifed on the entire peninsula and with historical sources that list the Umbri among the most ancient Italic populations.

Sisto, 06132 – Perugia, Italy Received 3 December 2014; Accepted 4 March 2015 Abstract – We set the first comprehensive inventory of Trichoptera species from the Topino River basin (Umbria, Italy), based on research carried out from 1947 to 2006 at 61 lotic sites (including rheocrenous and rheolimnocrenous springs and watercourses) and 1 lentic site (marsh). In total, 78 species and 5 subspecies from 17 families were collected. The species belong to several chorological categories. The inventory com- prises 16 species and 5 subspecies endemic to the Italian fauna with Rhyacophila italica, Drusus camerinus, Drusus improvisus and Allogamus ausoniae limited to the central Apennines. The presence of Beraeodes minutus and Erotesis baltica in the Fonti del Clitunno and Wormaldia pulla marlieri in the Fergia River is noteworthy because they are rare species in Italy. Almost 60 years of research now allow us to draw a synthesis of Trichoptera diversity and distribution in light of the geological history at the drainage basin level. • Ground Effects in the September-October 1997 Umbria-Marche (Central Italy) Seismic Sequence and Their Significance for Seismic Hazard Assessment
2494 GROUND EFFECTS IN THE SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 1997 UMBRIA-MARCHE (CENTRAL ITALY) SEISMIC SEQUENCE AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE FOR SEISMIC HAZARD ASSESSMENT E. ESPOSITO1, L. FERRELI2, G. MASTROLORENZO3, A.M. MICHETTI2, S. PORFIDO1, L. SERVA4, A.L. SIMONELLI1 AND E. VITTORI4 SUMMARY The September-October 1997 seismic sequence in the Umbria-Marche region of Central Italy (main shocks on September 26th , Mw 5.7 and 6.0, and on October 14th , Mw 5.6) left significant ground effects, which were mainly concentrated in the Colfiorito intermountain basin. These effects included surface faulting, ground cracks and settlements, rock falls, slides, hydrological and gas anomalies. Of special interest was the observation of surface ruptures generated along segments of a system of normal faults already mapped as capable, with end-to-end lengths of 12 kilometers and maximum displacements of 8 cm. In this paper it is emphasized that surface faulting due to the 1997 event can be used to infer the threshold magnitude for surface faulting in Central Apennines, allowing to calibrate palaeoearthquake size from fault offsets as seen in trench investigations. INTRODUCTION This paper focuses on the September 26th events, named as Colfiorito earthquakes from their epicentral area, which were the strongest ones of the whole sequence and produced the most significant geological effects. A first shock on September 3rd (at 22:07 GMT, Ml 4.5) was followed, on September 26th , by two moderate earthquakes (Figure 1) with epicenter in the Colfiorito area (Mw = 5.7 at 00:33 GMT and Mw = 6.0 at 09:40 GMT), which produced the highest damage (Intensity IX-X MCS) [Camassi et al., 1997], and by two other main shocks on October 3rd (Mw = 5.4) and 14th (Mw = 5.7), the last one with the epicenter more to the South, nearby Sellano [Boschi and Cocco, 1997, Morelli et al., 1998].

2201 COLFIORITO 1997 EARTHQUAKES DAMAGES SEVERITY OBSERVATIONAND SITE EFFECTS Andrea TERTULLIANI1 SUMMARY September 1997 registered the onset of a seismic sequence effecting the Umbria-Marche region (Central Italy), in which earthquakes up to IX MCS degree caused diffused damage over a large area. With respect to villages settled in an intermountain basin near the epicentral area, the resulting damage pattern is investigated to give a better understanding of future local ground motion sensitivity, from a qualitative point of view. Macroseismic survey data are collected and compared with the surface geology of 15 villages and hamlets within a restricted area. It emerges that among these 15 settlements, six individual groups are discernable showing a gradual variation to the damage severity, inside a relatively small area. Such abrupt damage variation is influenced by modest scale lithological transitions. In particular, major effects occurred within the basin in villages settled close to border faults. These observations support models existing in literature, which maintain that edge effects and the generation of diffracted waves in soft basins contribute to a strong shaking at site. INTRODUCTION Many different elements determine the seismic shaking of an inhabited center and it is difficult to evaluate the individual significance of each factor. However, local surface geology, together with dwelling characteristics, are those most commonly claimed. The crucial role of near surface geology in site amplification has been demonstrated by many authors, both from theoretical and observational points of view [Borcherdt, 1970; Borcherdt and Glassmoyer, 1992; Moczo and Bard, 1993; Tertulliani and Maramai, 1998; and many others]. The idea that geomorphology and geology might influence the damage pattern during an earthquake is not new.
