Georgetown University Student Employment Office Information for Incoming Students Georgetown University Student Employment Office 3520 Prospect Street, NW | Car Barn, Suite 304 | Washington, DC 20057 Phone: (202) 687-4187 | Fax: (202) 784-4877 | [email protected] Follow us on Twitter at @GeorgetownSEO Welcome to Georgetown Student Employment! Student employment at Georgetown is a unique opportunity. Last year nearly 3500 students worked part-time, hourly positions through the university. These positions provide student employees with experience in fields such as research and tutoring and allow students to work everywhere from Lauinger Library to Yates Field house to academic and other departments on campus. Though many on and off campus positions hire students through the Federal Work Study (FWS) program, there are a variety of positions available for all students. What is Federal Work Study? Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a federally funded financial aid program established to provide part-time employment opportunities for students with demonstrated financial need. Through this program, students may earn wages that are partially federally subsidized through working for FWS employers, both on and off campus. Your eligibility for all types of aid, including FWS, will be determined by Georgetown's financial aid office. In order to determine if you have been given a FWS award, please contact the Office of Student Financial Services (202-687-9138) in order to speak with your financial aid counselor. How do I find a job on campus? When you receive your Georgetown NetID and password, you will be able to log into Hoyaworks, our student employment database. Go to http://seo.georgetown.edu, select “Georgetown Students” and enter your login information. From there you will be able to search for on and off campus positions that are both FWS funded and non-FWS funded. There are on campus positions in many departments that advertise a wide variety of available jobs. Off campus positions are also posted on Hoyaworks and range from babysitting and restaurant positions to working for nonprofits and other businesses in Washington DC. Our office posts hourly, part-time, paid positions for which students can apply. All positions are paid in accordance with DC minimum wage laws (which require that employers pay employees at least $10.50 hourly starting July 1, 2015). Compensation for on and off campus student positions can range from $10.50 to $20.00 per hour and is dependent on both the type of job and the student’s skill level. How do I apply for a job? Students can apply for most positions through the Hoyaworks website. We recommend that students apply for many positions and follow up directly with departments to ensure that their applications have been received. A resume is typically required in a student’s application, and interviews are generally conducted to determine whether or not a student is a good fit for the position and the department. What can I do over the summer to prepare for applying for student jobs? Many positions require students to submit resumes along with their applications. The Student Employment Office can help you to perfect your resume for these applications. Feel free to email us, call us, or stop by our office in the Car Barn. An additional resource for resume building for the professional world is the Cawley Career Education Center. Required documents and other materials can be found here: http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-9.pdf. Though you might not be on campus yet, you can begin to browse through jobs on Hoyaworks over the summer. Many employers post positions at the start of each semester, so we encourage you to take a look early on and check back frequently to view new posts that may interest you. If you have a specific department in mind for which you are interested in working, learn more about the department on the Georgetown University website and feel free to contact them early on to express your interest.
