A newcomer to West Valley Light Opera, the lovely Cheryl is a native Californian.Fortu- r nately for us, she now makes her home in the Bay Area. She has, to her credit, degrees in Music and French, and is on the faculty of the San Francisco Girls Chorus. A prolific singer, Cheryl first performed in San Francisco with the Lamplighters in 1982. Since then, she has appeared in 36 productions, with leading roles in 24 of them, ranging from musicals, through operetta and opera. In addition, Cheryl often performs with chamber music ensembles and, occasionally, with society bands. Among her favorite roles, Cheryl lists Elsie in "Yeoman of the Guard', Adele in "Die Fledermaus", Mabel in "Pirates of Penzance", and Diana in "Emperor Norton". This intrepid reporter found out that Cheryl has a warm spot in her heart for motorcycles.'Nuff said. JIM SPIVEY - Prince Danilo. Jim comes to us a second time, in a row, mind you, having just performed the role of Curly in WVLOA production of "Oklahoma" last season. He has an impressive list of theatrical credits, including one with SJCLO in "Me and My Girl". Jim also performed the role of Tevye in Davis Musical Theater's "Fiddler On The Roof", as well as the role of Curly at Modesto Junior College. He grew up in the Bay Area, attended Monta Vista High School and has been involved in musical theater on and off since high school. Jim is married to Nancy, has two daughters, Sara and Leighann, and works for Auto-Chlor Systems in Commercial Sales/Kitchen Design. This is Jim's first operetta. Hopefully, it won't be his last. PAT PAGENDARM - Natalie, Mme. Popoff. A native of San Francisco, Pat has graced the Santa Clara Valley for the past 19 years. She received her BA from San Francisco State and a Bachelor in Music from San Jose State University. Pat will be recognized by devotees of Gilbert & Sullivan, having performed with the G & S Society of San Jose. Her first taste of theater was in Redwood City at Sequoia High School, and then going on to perform with other theater groups in that locale. Pat met her husband while playing the part of Eliza in "My Fair Lady". She claims to have no favorite roles, though, because she enjoys whatever she sings. In fact, she loves singing so much, she is slightly evangelical about getting other people to sing. In her own words, "It feels so good, it can be enjoyed in public and it isn't fattening". With an attitude like that, we know we have a winner here. FRANK A. FARRIS - Pierre de Jolidon. A relative newcomer to Silicon Valley, Frank, hailing from Santa Monica, is now an associate professor at Santa Clara University. After starting his musical career as Albert J. Peterson in a high school production of "Bye, Bye Birdie", Frank has lent his voice to most of the tenor roles in the Gilbert & Sullivan Society repertoire, and is now studying roles that are more operatic in nature. In the G & S genre, Frank's favorite roles range from the mainstream: Ralph Rackstraw in "HMS Pinafore", to the obscure: Captain Fitz-Bat- tleaxe in "Utopia Ud". When it comes to opera, Frank favors Kaspar in Menotti's "Amah I and the Night Visitors" for the Fresno Lyric Opera Theater, and Spalanzani in "Tales of Hoffman", with West Bay Opera. On his summer break, Frank attended the Wesley Balk Institute at the Minnesota Opera, where he practiced "moving each eyebrow, independently, while singing high notes". Luckily, for him and for us, the role of Captain Jolidon does not require any such DON JENSEN - Popoff. The son of a Danish immigrant father and a German mother, Don, an Air Force Colonel, (Ret.), is married to the president of his own fan club, Iris. They have three wonderful sons, all over6'4". This is Don's second show with West Valley Light Opera. His first was "Kismet", last season, playing the role of Omar Khayyam. Don is just a delightful person to know, and so it comes as no surprise that he enjoys people, music, theater, flying, golf, treasure hunting, traveling and a good joke. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, carrying an MS from the University of Oklahoma, he is an engineering manager in the aerospace industry at LockheedDon's been around this area for about 30 years, with absences for overseas military duty. He, too, comes to us from the Gilbert & Sullivan Society, having performed as Sir Marmaduke in "Sorcerer", Adam in "Ruddigore", and Captain Corcoran in "HMS Pinafore". His attitude and professionalism shines brightly every night, and we welcome him back with open arms. FRED CALLBECK - Nish. Another newcomer to West Valley Light Opera, Fred hails from Burlingame, California, arriving in Saratoga at the ripe old age of two. His theatrical work began at Saratoga High School, in "Oliver", in 1978. We're happy to note he also did tech work at West Valley. His first role was in "The Fantasticks" for Cal Poly C.L.O., where he graduated in 1985. His favorite roles are Austin in "True West", Koko in "The Mikado", Jack Pointe in "Yeoman of the Guard", all for the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of San Jose. Right now, when not performing, he is a process analyst for Tredegar Industries, in Fremont. Fred is a joy to work with. He says he's so very happy to be playing a character so far from his own personality. "Remember: it's not the size of your imagination that's important..it's what you do with it." And that is a direct quote.

As an alternative to the prevailing literature, which has approached this form of musical theater mostly through broad surveys and detailed studies of a handful of well‐known masterpieces, my dissertation presents a montage of loosely connected, previously unconsidered case studies. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring operetta’s importance for the image of Vienna, these vignettes aim to supply new glimpses not only of a seemingly obsolete art form but also of the urban and cultural life of which it was a part. My stories evolve around the following works: Der Millionenonkel (1913), Austria’s first feature‐length motion picture, a collage of the most successful stage roles of a celebrated

the Merry widow SPARKLE AND SEDUCTION Renée Fleming stars in Susan Stroman’s sumptuous new production of Lehár’s The Merry Widow, a romance for grown-ups set against a glittering Belle Époque backdrop. By eric myers hen Franz Lehár’s The Merry Widow had its world premiere at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien on December 30, 1905, no one knew that it was ushering in the remarkable so-called “Silver Era” of Viennese oper- Wetta. Since the “Golden Era” of such 19th-century hits as Strauss’s The Gypsy Baron and Millöcker’s The Beggar Student, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung had come to the fore, shaking up Europe’s attitudes toward sanity and sex. Vienna, newly clothed in the vines, tendrils, and flowing-haired maidens of Art Nouveau, had become a center of ideas and new artistic movements. There was no way that the popular young operetta composers of the day were going to remain unaffected. 46Renée | New Fleming Productio sings Nthes title role opposite Nathan Gunn. • THE MERRY WIDOW Music by Franz Lehar English Dialogue by Gershom Clark Morningstar Lyrics by Adrian Ross and Ronald Orenstein
THE MERRY WIDOW Music by Franz Lehar English Dialogue by Gershom Clark Morningstar Lyrics by Adrian Ross and Ronald Orenstein FEATURES OF THIS SHOW The Merry Widow was a major hit in the United States, two years after it opened in Vienna. It boasted an English translation by Adrian Ross, a major lyricist in England. Although other librettos have been written for it since, Ross’s lyrics hold up very well, when modified for modern audiences. They convey the language that marks the period that is so important for the style of the show. Gershom Morningstar was commissioned by the Guild to rework the dialog, which was the show's weakest feature. New elements were added for plot depth and to increase the humor Obviously a star vehicle for a soprano as the Widow, the tenor De Rosillon and the soprano Valencienne have glorious duet material. The role of Danilo is one of the few chances for a baritone to be the romantic lead. The character moving the plot is Baron Zeta, who may be primarily an actor, as he sings little. There are good opportunities for supporting characters as well. CAST REQUIREMENTS Widow Hanna Glavari, soprano Marquis Cascada, baritone Count Danilo Danilovitch, baritone M. The Merry Widow November 2007 The Merry Widow Music by Franz Lehár Produced by kind permission of the Australian Ballet Foundation Original book and lyrics by Victor Leon and Leo Stein Choreography: Ronald Hynd Scenario: Sir Robert Helpmann Music: Franz Lehár Musical Adaptation: John Lanchbery Set and Costume Design: Desmond Heeley Lighting Design: Michael J. Whitfield This production entered the repertoire through the generosity of THE VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE, THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA, joined by the Rotary Club of Toronto. This balletic version, choreography by Ronald Hynd and scenario by Sir Robert Helpmann, has been made courtesy of the composer’s and librettists’ heirs and by special arrangement with Glocken Verlag Limited, London. The Merry Widow is presented by Cover: Greta Hodgkinson as Hanna (2001). Right: Karen Kain and John Meehan as Hanna and Danilo in the National Ballet premiere (1986). The Merry Widow The year is 1905 and the fate of the proud but impoverished Balkan principality of Pontevedro hangs perilously on the marriage plans of a rich, beautiful widow. If she weds a foreigner it could spell financial ruin for her homeland, therefore she must be coaxed into marrying a fellow Pontevedrian. The Merry Widow first delighted audiences as an operetta and has continued to do so as a ballet. Hungarian composer Franz Lehár’s The Merry Widow was first presented in Vienna in 1905. A musical feast, it aptly captures the contrasting national passions of the Balkan Pontevedrians and the elegant Parisians whose city is the backdrop for this story of love and intrigue.
