Time: Emily Dickinson in the Nineteenth Century (University Cordially, of Massachusetts Press, 2012) Cristanne Miller provides new ways of situating Emily Dickinson in relation to nineteenth-century literary culture, examining how her innovative practices relate to the popular poetry of her day. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH 2 www.english.buffalo.edu FACULTY NEWS Andrew Stott, Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies for the English Department, has been selected to be the next Director of the UB Honors College. Andy is the winner of a SUNY Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching and has published two books, Comedy (Routledge, 2005) and The Pantomime Life of Joseph Grimaldi: Laughter, Madness, and the Story of Britain’s Greatest Comedian (Canongate, 2009), the latter of which has won numerous awards including the 2010 George Freedley Award. Looking at this new position as less a shift to administrative staff and more an extension of his work in the English Department, Andy is excited to create new curriculum, build community in and outside the classroom, and work with UB students in the interdisciplinary and challenging environment of the University Honors College. Committed to the “think globally, act locally” approach of the Honors College, Andy plans to emphasize civic engagement and active student participation in their educational, local, and global communities. He is also pleased to continue teaching and working within the English Department. Of Andy’s selection, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Diane Christian writes: “In a national search, Andy Stott emerged from a pool of highly qualified candidates as a brilliant and visionary choice for Director of the Honors College andAssociate Dean for Undergraduate Education. The Search Committee, Honors staff and students, and University administration were unqualified in their regard for him. Professor Stott succeeds the founding director SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Kipp Herreid. Associate Professor Carine Mardorossian received a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. A member of the Department since 1999, Carine has taught a range of courses including immigrant literature, Caribbean literature, and environmental literature. She has just completed the manuscript for her second book, “Framing the Victim: Rape, Agency, and Masculinity in the Contemporary United States.” Adjunct News Doug Basford, Assistant Director of Composition, has won a $2500 poetry prize from the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Fund, the second time he has been awarded a prize by that organization. Out of 1600 applicants, Doug also received one of 30 fellowships to attend poetry workshops in Concordia University’s 2012 Summer Literary Seminars hosted in Vilnius, Lithuania. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH 3 www.english.buffalo.edu COMMENCEMENT The English Department Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony took place on Friday, May 11 in Clemens 120 From 11:00-1:00. Robert Daly, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, and Patrick Riedy, winner of the George Knight Houpt Prize and the Friends of the University Libraries Prize, addressed the seniors and their families. “As each of us moves forward, writing our own narratives, we will re- member fragments of our experience here at UB. However, I like to believe that what we will remem- ber more than anything is the collective search for truth through words. I feel it is safe to say that part of what we all hope for through literature is a better understanding of why we are here, on earth. If nothing else, literature offers us the comfort of knowing we are not alone. It is hard to make note of why each of us chose to study literature. Some of us want to be teachers, some lawyers, and some may want to boycott books for a few years. Whatever you plan on doing from this day forward, chances are words will find you at the proper time. Remember, then, how important it is to share those words, to write them down or tell your friends and family. Because words are, simultaneously, what we study to find ourselves and what we use to understand each other.” -Patrick Riedy, BA 2012 Congratulations and good luck to all of our graduating seniors.     Cristanne Miller SUNY Distinguished Professor of English and Edward H. Butler Professor of Literature, SUNY at Buffalo Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair in American Studies, Université de Paris Diderot Fall 2013 Cristanne Miller is SUNY Distinguished Professor of English and Edward H. Butler Professor of Literature at the University at Buffalo. Since 2006 she has also served as the chair of the English Department at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. Her research interests include comparative modernist poetry, nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American poetry and the effects of the Civil War on U.S. poetry as a genre as well as gender and language issues. Professor Miller focuses mainly on Emily Dickinson, Mina Loy, Else Lasker-Schüler, Marianne Moore, Civil War poetry, and the cities of New York and Berlin between 1900 and 1930. Among her publications are Cultures of Modernism: Marianne Moore, Mina Loy, Else Lasker-Schüler. Gender and Literary Community in New York and Berlin (2005), and Marianne Moore: Questions of Authority (1995). In 1993, she co-authored, with Suzanne Juhasz and Martha Nell Smith, Comic Power in Emily Dickinson. Her book Emily Dickinson: A Poet´s Grammar (1987) received outstanding reviews. Professor Miller also co-edited, amongst others, The Emily Dickinson Handbook (1998), with Roland Hagenbüchle and Gudrun Grabher, and “Words for the Hour”: A New Anthology of American Civil War Poetry (2005) with Faith Barrett. She is currently working on Emily Dickinson’s Poems and Poetry After Gettysburg. Since 2005, Professor Miller has edited The Emily Dickinson Journal.     WASHINGTONDC, 1 949-1 950 Bishop on WWII & the Cold War lizabeth Bishop-from her attic office at the Library of E Congress during her year as poetry consultant in 1949- 1950-could literally see the Capitol every work day as the national government began to formulate the Cold War and to commit the nation to the Korean War in 1950.' She therefore had a "privileged" insider's view of the Cold War's "arrival" in, or invasion of, daily US life. Official Washington rhetoric over- flowed with visions of the postwar nation's power to vanquish Communism and to save the world. The US international news magazine Time reported an example of this emerging dominant national discourse in its May 29, 1950 issue as it quoted a gov- ernment spokesman on Cold War "containment" policy: It is the only war in history where the question of destruction doesn't enter into it at all. Everything we are doing is building up. We have rebuilt Europe, not destroyed it. Now, if we carry on a smart, resourceful, cold war, the kind of war free people can carry on, Russia will be contained. All we have to do is carry on intelligently, and at ex- tremely low cost, the political, economic, inilitary and informational measures already under way. Moving from regularly anthologized poems such as "The Fish" to the more obscure "Nova Scotia" poems and then into scholarly criticism of Bishop's work, I was dismayed to discover that many critics read her poems as touching, cathartic encounters with her tragic childhood instead of deliberate pieces of fiction. Even very helpful bibliographies, such as the recent one by Barbara Page, call poems featuring child speakers "autobiographical" or discuss critics' explorations of "autobiographical" elements, without defining or proving why they are autobiographical. Finding no help in the critics, I turned to other poets and, following T. s. Eliot's lead, looked back to the image­ filled worlds of George Herbert, Andrew Marvell, and Henry Vaughan. In their poetry, I found parallel metaphors of childhood and poetic techniques that helped me modify the purely autobiographical readings of Bishop and establish her as part of a poetic tradition.

    C19: The Society of Nineteenth-Century Americanists 2015 Candidate Biographies and Statements Candidates for Chair of the Nominations Committee: Stephanie Foote is Professor of English and Gender and Women’s Studies and Chair of the Department of Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has published articles on Henry James, queer print culture, regional fiction, realism, and other topics in late nineteenth-century literature and culture. She is the author of Regional Fictions: Culture and Identity in Nineteenth- Century American Literature (2001) and The Parvenu’s Plot: Gender, Culture, and Class in the Age of Realism (2014). With Elizabeth Mazzolini, she edited Histories of the Dustheap: Waste, Material Cultures, Social Justice (2012), and with Stephanie LeMenager, she founded and currently edits Resilience: A Journal of the Environmental Humanities. Her current work is in the environmental humanities with a focus on garbage and waste in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the working title of her current project is The Art of Things: Narrative and Waste. Stacey Margolis is Associate Professor of English at the University of Utah. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1997. Focusing on the nineteenth-century public sphere, her first book, The Public Life of Privacy in Nineteenth-Century American Literature (Duke, 2005), explored questions of individual agency and responsibility. Her second book, Fictions of Mass Democracy in Nineteenth-Century America (Cambridge University Press, 2015), examines how literature helped theorize public opinion in the age before polling. Having served as Chair of the University at Buffalo’s English Department from 2006 to 2013, Professor Miller is currently the “Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair” at Paris Diderot University and a Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies. She has published extensively on 19th- and 20th-century poetry and has lectured across Europe and North America, as well as in Turkey, China, and Japan. She was president of both the Modernist Studies Association and the Emily Dickinson International Society and is general editor of the Emily Dickinson Journal. Apart from Civil War poetry and Dickinson, her research interests include gender and language issues, modernist poetry (especially Marianne Moore, Mina Loy, and Else Lasker-Schüler), the cities of New York and Berlin between 1900 and 1930, and literary editing.
