CORE FUNCTIONS OF ASSIN NORTH DISTRICT ASSEMBLY The Assembly is mandated to perform the following functions: 1. ESTABLISHMENT Exercise political and administrative authority in the district Constitutes the planning authority for the district The District was established by LI 2338 of 2017. Formulate and execute plans, programmes and strategies for the overall development of the district NAME, LOCATION AND SIZE The Assin North District is among the twenty-two (22) MMDAs of the Central Region Responsible for the overall development in the district of Ghana. It was recently carved out from the defunct Assin North Municipal Assembly Maintenance of security and public safety in the district in 2017 and was inaugurated on 15th March, 2018 by the Legislative Instrument (LI) Provision of infrastructure (schools, clinics, etc.) 2338. The Assin North District is bounded to the North by the Adansi South District in the Ashanti Region, to the South by the Assin Fosu Municipal, to the East by the Birim 5. DISTRICT ECONOMY AGRIC HEALTH Agriculture is the main economic activity in the district, employing 65% of the Health Facilities in the District economically active population. Box NB41, New Abirem, E/R, Ghana * E-mail of the corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract The Assin North Municipality is endowed with forest resources that are used for economic purposes. This study focused on the interests of the actors involved in the management of off-reserve forests in the municipality and how their interactions influence forest management outcomes. The study collected primary data through interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), observations and photography using 8 weeks in the field between May to July 2012. The study conducted 35 structured interviews using questionnaires; 14 unstructured interviews; two (2) semi-structured interviews; and five (5) FDGs to gather data on forest actors, interests and practices from the study area. Participants in the study included farmers, staff of the Forest Service Division of the Forestry Commission, Bush managers of logging companies, staff of the Municipal Assembly and chiefs. Through the lens of political ecology, the study revealed that actors in the municipality are enmeshed in a competitive battle for the economic benefits accruing from the commercial exploitation of forest resources (timber). Again, actors do not have equal powers in such a competitive battle.

  • Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana
    Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana Small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs) serve as the main or additional source of income for more than three million Ghanaians and can be broadly categorised into wood forest products, non-wood forest products and forest services. Many of these SMFEs are informal, untaxed and largely invisible within state forest planning and management. Pressure on the forest resource within Ghana is growing, due to both domestic and international demand for forest products and services. The need to improve the sustainability and livelihood contribution of SMFEs has become a policy priority, both in the search for a legal timber export trade within the Voluntary Small and Medium Partnership Agreement (VPA) linked to the European Union Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (EU FLEGT) Action Plan, and in the quest to develop a national Forest Enterprises strategy for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). This sourcebook aims to shed new light on the multiple SMFE sub-sectors that in Ghana operate within Ghana and the challenges they face. Chapter one presents some characteristics of SMFEs in Ghana. Chapter two presents information on what goes into establishing a small business and the obligations for small businesses and Ghana Government’s initiatives on small enterprises. Chapter three presents profiles of the key SMFE subsectors in Ghana including: akpeteshie (local gin), bamboo and rattan household goods, black pepper, bushmeat, chainsaw lumber, charcoal, chewsticks, cola, community-based ecotourism, essential oils, ginger, honey, medicinal products, mortar and pestles, mushrooms, shea butter, snails, tertiary wood processing and wood carving.

    1 Hypotheses on the Diachronic Development of the Akan Language Group Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah, Department of Akan-Nzema, University of Education, Winneba [email protected] Cell: +233 244 732 172 Abstract Historical linguists have already established the constituent varieties of the Akan language group as well as their relationships with other languages. What remains to be done is to reconstruct the Proto- Akan forms and this is what this paper sets out to accomplish. One remarkable observation about language is that languages change through time. This is not to obscure the fact that it is at least conceivable that language could remain unchanged over time, as is the case with some other human institutions e.g. various taboos in some cultures or the value of smile as a nonverbal signal. Be that as it may, the mutually comprehensible varieties of the codes that constitute the Akan language group have evidently undergone some changes over the course of time. However, they lack adequate written material that can take us far back into the history of the Akan language to enable any diachronic or historical linguist to determine hypotheses on their development. Besides, if empirical data from the sister Kwa languages or from the other daughters of the Niger-Congo parent language were readily available, then the reconstruction of the Proto-Akan forms would be quite straightforward. But, unfortunately, these are also hard to come by, at least, for the moment. Nevertheless, to reconstruct a *proto-language, historical linguists have set up a number of methods, which include the comparative method, internal reconstruction, language universals and linguistic typology among others.

The pivotal place of Africans can be seen in the interaction between indigenous slave-owning elites (aristocrats and urban Euro-African merchants), local European administrators, and slaves themselves. My approach to this problematic is both chronologically and geographically comparative. The central comparison between Senegal and the Gold Coast contrasts the varying impact of colonial policies, integration into the trans-Atlantic economy; and, more importantly, the continuity of indigenous institutions and the transformative agency of indigenous actors.

    THE THREE AKYEM: A COMMUNITY PARK FOR THE TOWN OF AKYEM ODA, GHANA by ALEXANDER NAGEL (Under the Direction of Pratt Cassity) ABSTRACT This thesis presents a program and design for a new community park for Akyem Oda, a small town in the rain forest region of Ghana. The town was visited two times in 2004 and 2005 as part of the ongoing yearly Summer Service-Learning Studio during which time a site inventory was performed. Background research for the program development included geography and history of Ghana with a special focus on the Asante kingdom, traditional building techniques, land planning and an exploration of Akyem history in relationship to the dominant kingdom of Asante. A photo documentation of the main features of Akyem Oda and their spatial relationships to each other completes the research part of this thesis. The program for the proposed ‘Three Akyem Community Park’ integrates a Parade Ground, a Cultural Center and three Groves representing each of the three Akyem people on the 8.9 acres rectilinear site. O. Box AD 50, Cape Coast, Ghana Abstract Road transport carries beyond 95% of passenger and freight traffic in Ghana. Though autogas, also referred to as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) was traditionally encouraged to be used in residences and households, many road transport owners and drivers have shifted to the use of the fuel. The main objective of the study was therefore to ascertain the consumption characteristics of autogas in the urban and rural administrative districts in the Central Region of Ghana. The study adopted both quantitative and qualitative methods in gathering data, using questionnaire and interview schedule. Multistage sampling technique was used in choosing the region, Metropolitans, Municipalities and Districts (MMDs). Ten rural and urban districts were considered while five hundred and fifty-six drivers partook in the study. Open- and closed-ended questions were posed. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software (Version 21) was employed as the in the analysis. Descriptive tools such as frequencies, percentages, and tables were utilized in the analysis. It was found among others that between 19 percent (within the districts) and 39 percent (in the metropolis/municipalities) of the drivers use autogas to power their vehicles comprising taxis, private cars and minibuses. The ratios of autogas, gasoline and gasoil usage in the rural and urban districts were 19:29:58 and 39:20:45 respectively.

The size of the population and its spatial distribution, growth and change over time, in addition to its socio-economic characteristics are all important in development planning. A population census is the most important source of data on the size, composition, growth and distribution of a country’s population at the national and sub-national levels. Data from the 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will serve as reference for equitable distribution of national resources and government services, including the allocation of government funds among various regions, districts and other sub-national populations to education, health and other social services. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is delighted to provide data users, especially the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, with district-level analytical reports based on the 2010 PHC data to facilitate their planning and decision-making. The District Analytical Report for the Assin South District is one of the 216 district census reports aimed at making data available to planners and decision makers at the district level. In addition to presenting the district profile, the report discusses the social and economic dimensions of demographic variables and their implications for policy formulation, planning and interventions. The conclusions and recommendations drawn from the district report are expected to serve as a basis for improving the quality of life of Ghanaians through evidence- based decision-making, monitoring and evaluation of developmental goals and intervention programmes.
