Her family moved to New York City when her father was cast in a role on the daytime drama "Love of Life." As an eleven year-old student at the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, she joined the drama club and her experience there encouraged her to pursue acting as a career. She then studied further at New York's High School ofthe Performing Arts. After she graduated in 1987, she landed roles in the off-broadway production For Dear Life at New York's Public Theater and Dancing On Checkee s Grave. Jennifer's television career then started after being cast as a series regular on "Molloy" and "The Edge." She had guest-starring roles on "Quantum Leap" and "Burke's Law'' and a starring role in "Ferris Bueller." She was then cast in perhaps her most well known role as "Rachel Green" in the classic television comedy "Friends." For her role as "Rachel," she received five Emmy nominations, two SAG Award nominations and two Golden Globe nominations. She won an Emmy (2002) and a Golden Globe (2003) for Lead, Actress in a Comedy. The generosity of her fans lead to her winning five People's Choice Awards. During hiatus from "Friends," Jennifer pursued a budding film career. She had roles in THEN THERE WAS YOU, PICTURE PERFECT, DREAMS FOR AN INSOMNIAC, SHE'S THE ONE, ROCK STAR, and THE OBJECT OF MY AFFECTION-- the first of her roles with Paul Rudd --and BRUCE ALMIGHTY with Jim Carrey. One of her most critically acclaimed roles was 2002's THE GOOD GIRL with Jake Gyllenhaal. Jennifer received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance. With the emotional end of"Friends" and her time as Rachel Green, Jennifer devoted herself full-time to her movie career. She had starring roles in RUMOR HAS IT with Kevin Costner and Shirley Maclaine, DERAILED with Clive Owen and the box office hit THE BREAK UP with Vince Vaughn. For her role as a depressed housekeeper in director Nicole Holofcener's FRIENDS WITH MONEY, the independent film which also starred Frances McDormand and Catherine Keener and for which Jennifer received some of the best reviews of her career. Proving her ability to navigate the world of both independent and studio financed films, Jennifer also costarred in the box office hits in the emotionally moving MARLEY AND ME with Owen Wilson and HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU. She also starred alongside leading men Gerard Butler in THE BOUNTY HUNTER and Aaron Eckhart in LOVE HAPPENS. Adam Sandler played her leading man in the comedy hit JUST GO WITH IT. After costarring in her first film with Jason Bateman in THE SWITCH, Jennifer and Jason costarred in the box office hit HORRlBLE BOSSES which also starred Jason Sudeikis and Colin Farrell, in which Jennifer played a sexually insatiable dentist. As well as acting, Jennifer has pursued her interest in directing. Her first film was the short "Room 10'' which was part of an award winning short film series. She most recently di~ected one of an anthology of five short films "Project Five" exploring the impact of breast cancer on people's lives.

  • An Analysis of Hegemonic Social Structures in "Friends"
"I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU" IF YOU ARE JUST LIKE ME: AN ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC SOCIAL STRUCTURES IN "FRIENDS" Lisa Marie Marshall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor Audrey E. Ellenwood Graduate Faculty Representative James C. Foust Lynda Dee Dixon © 2007 Lisa Marshall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season.

  • Gender Stereotypes in the Sitcom Friends 1
Running Header: GENDER STEREOTYPES IN THE SITCOM FRIENDS 1 Gender Stereotypes in the Sitcom Friends: Content Analysis Kelly Reed Indiana Wesleyan University GENDER STEREOTYPES IN THE SITCOM FRIENDS 2 A Content Analysis Introduction One research method is to perform a content analysis on the subject in which the researcher wishes to expand knowledge. This study over gender stereotypes is a content analysis. A content analysis is a way to understand text and image in numbers, and is a quantitative research method. “In the context of communication research, content analysis is a quantitative, systematic, and objective technique for describing the manifest content of communications,” said Treadwell (2014). In this study, gender stereotypes are content analyzed in the sitcom, Friends. It is important to study these stereotypes because of the relationship between gender stereotypes in media, specifically television, and gender stereotypes within society. The show, Friends, is a good sample for a study of gender stereotypes in media because it focuses on the interaction between the three female characters and the three male characters. It depicts the way twenty year olds wanted to be acting and living during that time. The plot of sitcoms redefines the idea of a normal, typical life of an American. It is also an interesting study because it allows for a broad time span to be analyzed, since it aired for 10 years (Poniewozik, 2004). This study uses coding of each stereotype to count the frequency that certain male and female stereotypes are portrayed in a sample of 25 episodes. The results are analyzed to either verify or disprove hypotheses made during the initial research process.

  • 8 TV Power Games: Friends and Law & Order
8 TV Power Games: Friends and Law & Order There is no such thing as a one-man show | at least not in television: one feature that all TV shows have in common is the combination of a large number of diverse contributors: producers, scriptwriters, actors, and so on. This is illustrated in Exhibit 8.1, which depicts the links between key contributors to the making and selling of a TV show. Solid lines repre- sent some form of contractual relationship, whereas dashed lines represent non-contractual relationships of relevance for value creation and value distribution. As is the case with movies, pharmaceutical drugs, and other products, the distribution of TV show values is very skewed: many TV shows are worth relatively little, whereas a few shows generate a very high value: For example, at its peak Emmy Award-winning drama ER fetched $13 million per episode.1 How does the value created by successful shows get divided among its various contrib- utors, in particular actors, producers and networks? Who gets the biggest slice of the big pie? In this chapter, I address this question by looking at two opposite extreme cases in terms of relative negotiation power: Law & Order and Friends. Law & Order | and profits The legal drama series Law & Order was first broadcast on NBC on September 13, 1990. (The pilot episode, produced in 1988, was intended for CBS, but the network rejected it, just as Fox did later, in both cases because the show did not feature any \breakout" characters.) By the time the last show aired on May 24, 2010, it was the longest-running crime drama on American prime time TV.

California State University East Bay Abstract This article is a descriptive study on the emotional wellbeing of individuals involved in casual sexual relations, labeled as friends with benefits. The size was 119 adults. An online survey, approved by a local, peer-review panel, was used to collect data. To explore how participants felt in this type of relationship, the instrument was organized in a total of ten categories – five positive (happy, desired, satisfied, adventurer, excited), - five negative (empty, confused, used, clumsy, deceived) Participants could select one or several categories as an answer. Overall, positive emotions were selected significantly more than negative ones, and women made up the majority of positive responses. © 20120144 The Authors. • Miguel Arteta on Learning How to Run a Movie Set
September 15, 2017 - Miguel Arteta is a Puerto Rican film and television director best known for his films Chuck & Buck, The Good Girl, and most recently, Beatriz at Dinner. His next film is the experimental comedy Duck Butter, starring Alia Shawkat. Here Arteta recounts the practical education he received on movie sets working with the likes of Sidney Lumet, Sydney Pollack, and Jonathan Demme. "His curiosity and the way he was just actively responding, like letting himself respond in a joyful way to people and to situations, was incredible," says Arteta of Demme. "He was directing, not controlling. He was responding. If you control it then it's going to be a boring movie. You have to respond so that you feel there's life beyond the frame. The audience feels like they're coming on an exploration with you." As told to Charlie Sextro, 3025 words. Tags: Film, Process, Collaboration, Beginnings, Education. Miguel Arteta on learning how to run a movie set Did you have much experience on set before you started directing? I did. First of all, I worked on student films when I was at university, but when I moved to New York, my friend hooked me up to be a location scout for Sidney Lumet on two of his films, Q&A and Family Business. I didn’t know New York. I had to lie because they were shooting in Spanish Harlem for Q&A and I said, “Yeah, definitely. I’m Puerto Rican, I know.” My job was to drive the van to meet Timothy Hutton, star of Q&A, and Sidney at his house in the Upper East Side.
