the Saint John Evangelist Saint Wendelin Roman Catholic Parish Roman Catholic Parish Sunday, September 30, 2018 The Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, A Message From The Pastor ... Dear Brothers and Sisters, Have you ever been on a team? Maybe you have in sports or at work. We all come from families which are teams, I think. What is a team? A team is a group of people who come together to work toward a common goal. A team can be a great thing. Did you see Vance McDonald stiff arm that guy from Tampa Bay and run for a touchdown on Monday night? It was an amazing play. He is a great player. But if it were just Vance McDonald versus the entire Buccaneers team, no matter how fast and strong he is, he would lose. A team makes things happen that an individual can’t do by themselves. Each person plays a role. Each role is important. Any one of the teammates not doing his job and great things like that play don’t happen. Ben would have gotten sacked or the Thursday, October 4 ball would have been Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi tipped and we would One of our most beloved Saints never have seen such See page 3 for more St. Francis information. a cool play. So what teams are you on? What comes to mind when I ask that? Maybe you think about sports you play Monday: or the organizations you belong to. Maybe Jb 1:6-22; Ps 17:1bcd-3, 6-7; Lk 9:46-50 you think about your parish. That’s a team, right? It is supposed to be. Maybe you think Tuesday: about being a Catholic. There is one team that I would bet just about everyone here is Jb 3:1-3, 11-17, 20-23; Ps 88:2-8; a member of, no matter what is on our envelopes or our hoodies. The Baptized! If you Mt 18:1-5, 10 were baptized in a Catholic church - or in any Christian church that baptizes with water Wednesday: and in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, which includes almost all Protestant churches - then you are on an elite and important team. You are Jb 9:1-12, 14-16; Ps 88:10bc-15; on the team that has been claimed by Christ and filled with the Holy Spirit! You are on Lk 9:57-62 the team Prophets. Anointed to tell the world about the Love of Jesus Christ. No matter Thursday: what other team you are on, this team is the most eternally important one. Jb 19:21-27; Ps 27:7-9abc, 13-14; In the First Reading and the Gospel this week, we see unrest in the team. Moses has just Lk 10:1-12 lead the people of Israel through a sort of ordination. God took from the portion of the Friday: Spirit that He had given Moses, the same Spirit given to us, and shared it with the people. Jb 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5; Now Eldad and Medad didn’t go to the ordination. They stayed in their tents, probably looking at their phones! But God did not withhold the Spirit from them. The other Ps 139:1-3, 7-10, 13-14ab; Lk 10:13-16 people, ticked that Eldad and Medad hadn’t gone through what they had, complained Saturday: to Moses. It’s not fair, they said. We should stop them. But Moses understood that the Jb 42:1-3, 5-6, 12-17; goal of the team was most important. They were to be the light for all nations. Eldad and Ps 119:66, 71, 75, 91, 125, 130; Medad, even though they had stayed in their tents, were given the Spirit and were being Lk 10:17-24 good teammates now, allowing the Lord to speak through them. It furthered the goal of the team, said Moses, and he wished others would get over themselves and their petty Sunday: disagreements and get about the business of the team. Gn 2:18-24; Ps 128:1-6; Heb 2:9-11; Jesus faces a similar dilemma to Moses. Again, some are complaining because others Mk 10:2-16 [2-12] who weren’t from their group were doing the work of the team. Jesus, like Moses, says the goal of the team, telling the Good News, is what is important. Quit wasting time with this and get about the business of the team. So here is a question, what kind of teammate are you? Are you focused on the business of the team? And importantly, which team? It is easy to be like the people in our readings Confession - Saturdays and get hung up on some of the smaller teams we are a part of. They were stuck on St. Wendelin - 11:30am-Noon the people who went to the mountain with them in the First Reading and the team of St. John - 3:15-3:45pm the disciples in the Gospel. But God has bigger eyes than this. Our other teams - family, sports, work, parish - these are all good and important, but none of them is as eternally Baptism important as being on the team of the Prophets, the Baptized. So are you a good Baptism Class on Saturday, Oct. 6 teammate? Do you do your part to tell the Good News of Jesus Christ? Are you focused at 10:00am at St. Wendelin on the business of this team? Each is needed. Each is important. Eternally great things For information, call either office. can come if we all pull together as a team. Are you for us or against us? Class is required prior to the Sacrament. Peace and Love, Marriage Fr.
