With that in mind, Fr. Justin is taking over my Pastor’s Column until I return from PTO. With my prayers for a peace filled Advent,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today’s Gospel for this Second Sunday of Advent refers to St. John the Baptist as “a voice of one crying out in the desert.” This prophet’s mission is to “prepare the way of the Lord,” while doing so with a sense of urgency. Brothers and sisters, for weeks now, we have been hearing Jesus through the Gospels, urging us to be ready for the Coming of the Lord, “for you know neither the day nor the hour” (Matthew 25:13). We are asked not only to be ready for the Second Coming, which may or may not happen in our lifetime, but we are also asked to be ready for our death which is certain. Our readiness includes our sincere reflection upon both our life and our death. It is right and just to go before Our Lord in prayer, and to reflect upon our lives, both the good and the bad. For the good, we acknowledge our Lord’s generosity through our thanksgiving. For the bad, we ask the Divine Physician to heal us, and we cry out to Him with humble and contrite hearts to forgive us of our sins. We ask, “Lord, am I ready to come before you today?” We petition Him, “Help me Lord, prepare me.” We need not fear death, for “by dying He destroyed our death, and by rising He has restored our life.” St. Thomas Aquinas said, “what motivates any free act is a person’s ultimate goal in life.” Is sainthood your goal? Are you motivated by charity? Or are you motivated by fear? The Beloved Disciple said, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love” (I John 4:18). The reason why the Lord is constantly reminding you to trust Him is because He has the “map” that will help you arrive home safely. “Do not fear, I am with you; do not be anxious, I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). Not only are we to be ready and prepare ourselves for a happy and holy death, but as a part of our Christian vocation, we are called to help prepare others. Yes, it is our mission, like that of St. John the Baptist, to help “prepare the way of the Lord.” We do this especially with the most vulnerable among us, that is, the sick and the dying. As a priest, ministering to the sick and the dying is the most important role I have in the Body of Christ, along with offering the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and hearing confessions. When I enter your homes, or the nursing facilities, or the hospitals, I enter onto sacred ground. And I am sent by Mother Church to be with you and your loved ones in your time of need. In many situations, I have the privilege of preparing your loved ones for a happy and holy death. It is both a great gift to receive the Sacraments before death, as well as to administer those Sacraments to the dying. The Lord reminds me each time, “see how much I love you.” Those words are not only meant for me, but also for the one to whom I minister. “See how much I love you.” You too can be an instrument that prepares another soul to receive Christ. For the dying, the Last Rites consist of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, and Viaticum (Eucharist). To help prepare them, invite them to pray the rosary, the divine mercy chaplet, or maybe some other prayer or hymn that may be familiar to them. Provide them with a good examination of conscience to help them make a good confession. And remind them of the mercy of Our Lord. You could even share with them how the Lord has shown you great mercy. Share with them how much you love them and why you love them so much. And include your children, death should not be “taboo” to them. You could ask, “Dad, have you been able to pray lately? Would you like to pray together now?” “Paw Paw, would you like to see a priest? I bet he would be happy to see you.” “Mom, you know it is not too late to go to confession, the Lord desires to forgive you of all your sins so that you can be with Him in heaven.” Do not wait, as they say, until the last minute. We truly do not know the day nor the hour. Therefore, be ready, be prepared, and help prepare others as well. Motivated by charity, not fear, we prepare ourselves and others to go before the Lord, and say, “I am ready Lord.”

Sincerely in Christ,

Yo te he robustecido y te he ayudado, y te tengo a mi diestra justiciera.” Podrías preguntar: “Papá, ¿has podido orar últimamente?
