Young Alumni Leaders Members of the Young Alumni Council Met for Breakfast Last Oc- Tober During Meliora Weekend CLASS NOTES 1983E Thomas REUNION REDUX Young Alumni Leaders Members of the Young Alumni Council met for breakfast last Oc- tober during Meliora Weekend. With representatives in 12 cit- ies around the United States, the council works with the Office of Alumni Relations to help recent alumni stay connected to the University, and to connect to one another. In addition to organiz- ing and hosting happy hours, network receptions, and community service outings, the council helps with signature events such as the George Eastman birthday celebrations held each July, and hosts the Zero Year Reunion for recent alumni each Meliora Weekend. Spring 2020 marks a particularly busy and celebratory period for composer Robert Paterson. Called a “modern day master” by the New York Times, Paterson’s String Quartet No. 3 will be premiered at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall on March 5 by the Indianapolis String Quartet. On April 17, he celebrates his 50th birthday and the release of his 21-song Four Seasons project (out April 24 on Paterson’s American Modern Recordings). On May 6, the Oratorio Society of New York, under Kent Tritle, will perform Paterson’s Whitman’s America. Paterson’s ability to set text has been widely praised, with Gramophone stating that he “could probably set a telephone book to music and create something that captivates.” In The Four Seasons the composer has set the poems of Ann Stanford, Sharan Strange, Wallace Stevens, keep reading Dorothea Tanning, to name a few. The world premiere recording consists of four song-cycles (21 songs), written over the last 20 years, for four voice types (each representing a different season). Lutch CLASSICAL George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” has been an important work in the history of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. Festival artistic director and pianist James Tocco performed it at the inaugural festival in 1994, and then reprised the piece at the fifth, 10th and 15th festivals. The 20th Great Lakes festival’s big-finish finale Saturday will again feature Gershwin’s beloved evergreen with Tocco in the soloist role and the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings conducted by H. Robert Reynolds again providing the orchestral accompaniment. Actually, the relationship between Tocco, Gershwin and the festival predates year one. The pianist, a Detroit native, teamed up with Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings for a performance of the “Rhapsody” at Orchestra Hall in 1989. It was out of that appearance that the notion of the Great Lakes festival eventually took root. As usual, Saturday’s performance will feature the original 23-piece orchestration, whose brassy pep and small string section gratefully excise memories of gooey orchestral performances. The rest of the program promises plenty of allure, too. Judd Greenstein’s “A Serious Man” will be given its world premiere by the Claremont Trio, one of five former student ensembles featured this year that came through the festival’s training program years ago and became stars.
