William Carver Talbot (1856 - 1933) and family 1933 burial record at Croscombe Wm Talbot - in the new ground 8th rank 5th grave from wall south side of last path on his 2nd wife* aged 77 grave full'. * note 2nd wife was Emily Talbot, his third wife Annie survived him and was buried - 8th rank 3rd grave aged 81 years. He worked in the stone quarries at Croscombe. He used to play the accordian and entertain the regulars in the local pub near the Village Cross in Croscombe. He was injured working in a local quarry and was as a result partly blind (in one eye). He received a pension due to the injury. Grandson Bert Vincent (aged 89 in 2009) remembers collecting water for him when he lived at a house in 'The Drains' in Croscombe (near the Church but now apparently demolished) and getting a 'copper' for doing so. Defendant did not appear. Complainant stated that on the day in question he was crossing Marshfield when he saw the defendant in another field searching the hedges with a lurcher dog. Witness went to defendant and asked him what he was doing there. He replied that he did not know he was doing any harm. There was no footpath through the field in question. This being the second offence the defendant was fined 10s and costs. Western Gazette 23rd March 1883 William Talbot of Croscombe; Albert and Arthur Macey and Frank Hiscox of Stoke Lane were summoned by John Brown, gamekeeper to Captain Knatchbull, for trespassing on lands in the occupation of Mr William Osborn, in search of conies on 11th inst. The evidence of the complainant was to the effect that he watched the defendants beating the hedges in several fields. Finding no game they crossed the road and went into the field in question, where they searched two hedges.
