William Carver Talbot (1856 - 1933) and family 1933 burial record at Croscombe Wm Talbot - in the new ground 8th rank 5th grave from wall south side of last path on his 2nd wife* aged 77 grave full'. * note 2nd wife was Emily Talbot, his third wife Annie survived him and was buried - 8th rank 3rd grave aged 81 years. He worked in the stone quarries at Croscombe. He used to play the accordian and entertain the regulars in the local pub near the Village Cross in Croscombe. He was injured working in a local quarry and was as a result partly blind (in one eye). He received a pension due to the injury. Grandson Bert Vincent (aged 89 in 2009) remembers collecting water for him when he lived at a house in 'The Drains' in Croscombe (near the Church but now apparently demolished) and getting a 'copper' for doing so. Census entries - see final spreadsheet for full details 1911 - Rock Street, Croscombe, Somerset, age 54, quarryman 1901 - West Lane, Croscombe, Somerset, age 45, widower/stone quarryman 1891 - West Lane, Croscombe, Somerset, age 33, general labourer 1881 - James Terrace, Croscombe, Somerset, age 24, quarryman 1871 - Duncart Lane, Croscombe, Somerset, age 14, shoemaker's apprentice 1861 - Church Street, Croscombe, Somerset, age 4, son Western Gazette 27th April 1883 William Talbot of Croscombe was summoned by Henry Harris of Pilton, gamekeeper, for trespassing on land in the occupation of Robert Perry of Croscombe in search of game on 15th April. Defendant did not appear. Complainant stated that on the day in question he was crossing Marshfield when he saw the defendant in another field searching the hedges with a lurcher dog. Witness went to defendant and asked him what he was doing there. He replied that he did not know he was doing any harm. There was no footpath through the field in question. This being the second offence the defendant was fined 10s and costs. Western Gazette 23rd March 1883 William Talbot of Croscombe; Albert and Arthur Macey and Frank Hiscox of Stoke Lane were summoned by John Brown, gamekeeper to Captain Knatchbull, for trespassing on lands in the occupation of Mr William Osborn, in search of conies on 11th inst. The evidence of the complainant was to the effect that he watched the defendants beating the hedges in several fields. Finding no game they crossed the road and went into the field in question, where they searched two hedges.

    The 'Great' Battle of the Croscombe Cross and My Village Ancestry

    The ‘Great’ Battle of the Croscombe Cross and my village ancestry By Mark Wareham Updated 26th August 2013 In the late 19th century there was an uprising over the preservation of the medieval cross in the village of Croscombe in Somerset. This incident was as a result of efforts by the authorities to destroy the ancient monument and I was delighted to discover that a couple of my ancestors and other family members were directly involved and that one of them was one of the ringleaders. This is a brief story of the skirmish with same notes on the Say, Carver and Marshman families of the Croscombe. I shall start with descriptions of the ‘battle’ from two authors. From ‘Old Crosses of Somerset, 1877, by C Pooley’ “Some years ago, an incident of no little importance occurred in connection with this Cross, which deserves to be recorded. The local way-wardens, thinking the Cross an incumbrance, endeavoured to remove it. It seems that the removal of so ancient a landmark in historical associations of the village proved a graver and more serious matter than these enlightened wardens of the way were aware of. The inhabitants gathered around the old Cross, and came to its defence with bold and determined hearts, bent upon its preservation, but not before the shaft had been hurled to the ground, and its finial broken in twain. The demolishing party having been driven off, a flag was hoisted by the brave villagers bearing upon it the legend ‘BE FAITHFUL;’ this was struck during the melee but as quickly regained, and the standard of the Cross again waived proudly over the heads of the loyal and Christian defenders.
