Pilgrim DEPT, OF ZOOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY, NEW ZEALAND Abstract: Anisodactylus binotatus Fabr. 1787 (Col.: Carabidae), an introduced species now established in Canterbury (South Island), New Zealand, is reported for the first time. The literature respecting other carabids sometimes recorded as introduced is reviewed; Ago- nochila binotata (White, 1846), Agonum submetallicum (White, 1846), Hypharpax australasiae (Dejean, 1829) and Pentagonica vittipennis Chaudoir, 1877 are shown to be better considered as endemic to the Australia - New Zealand area. Other species are classed as either native to New Zealand, clearly introduced though not all established, or of doubtful occurrence in New Zealand. Introduction: The Carabidae of New Zealand are predominantly endemic species, but a small number of exotic species has been recorded. This paper reports a further introduc tion to the carabid fauna of this country and concludes with a survey of recorded exotic Carabidae in New Zealand. Specimens of the newly-recorded species were collected in domestic gardens in Christ church, and were included in a collection sent for identification to Dr. E. B. Britton, British Museum (Nat. Hist.), who kindly drew the writer's attention to the fact that they were so far unreported from New Zealand. Description of adult (from New Zealand specimens) Fig. 1. In the Orsiera Rocciavré Natural Park and in the Foresto Reserve 54 carabid species have been recorded by pitfall trap sampling carried out during 2007-2008 in 4 altitudinal transects, three located in the Chisone, Susa and Sangone valleys and the last one in Foresto. The Sangone Valley was the richest in species (33), whilst the Foresto Reserve showed the poorest assemblage (13 species overall). The differences are probably related to variability of climatic features, width of the transects as well as environmental diversity. The overall structure of the tran- sect assemblages are shown and some ecological indexes (Shannon Wiener, Even- ness, Margalef’s, Simpson Dominance, IndVal) are calculated in order to better charcterize the transects and the plots. Finally, some observations are reported on the most interesting recorded species and, moreover, on the most important fau- nistic element in this area, the steno-endemic species Carabus cychroides. Three different character data sets: morphological, allozyme and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are used to estimate the relationships. Cladistic and morphometric analyses are undertaken on adult morphological characters. Twenty six external morphological characters, including male and female genitalia, are used for cladistic analysis. The results from the cladistic analysis are strongly congruent with previous publications. The morphometric analysis uses multivariate discriminant functions, with 18 morphometric variables, to derive a phenogram by clustering from Mahalanobis distances (D2) of the discrimination analysis using the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetical averages (UPGMA). -

The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

Box 84 Lincoln University [email protected] Prepared for: Josef Langer Trust & Department of Conservation September 2011 An Invertebrate survey of reserves, covenants and significant remnants of eastern Banks Peninsula in 2010-2011 Abstract Reserves, covenants and bush remnants of the eastern side of Banks Peninsula were surveyed for invertebrates including ground beetles (carabids), weevils, spiders, moths, earthworms and snails. Sixteen carabid species were found including one new Holcaspis species. The six-eyed spider Periegops suterii was found in six sites. Light trapping moths identified 202 species with 122 from Hinewai Reserve alone. Soil sampling found 13 endemic species of worms. New species of millipedes (Diplopoda) and cranefly (Tipulidae) were also found. Recommendations for future research on Banks Peninsula are given. Introduction The Eastern side of Banks Peninsula was created by eruptions and subsequent erosion of the Akaroa volcano which was active between 9 and 8 million years ago (Wilson, 1992). -

The present study aims at complementing the data about the distribution of the carabids from the tribes Pterostichini, Spho- drini, and Platynini, containing many diverse, interesting, and endemic species. It gives new records for 67 species and 23 zoogeographical regions in Bulgaria. The material was collected in the period from 1926 to 2021 through different sampling methods. Twenty-three species are recorded for the first time in different regions. Six species are reported for the second time in the regions where they were currently collected. Thirty-one species have not been reported for more than 20 years in Eastern and Middle Stara Planina Mts., Kraishte region, Boboshevo-Simitli valley, Sandanski-Petrich valley, Lyulin Mts., Vitosha Mts., Rila Mts., Pirin Mts., Slavyanka Mts., Thracian Lowland, and Sakar-Tundzha re- gion. -

Effects of landscape heterogeneity and clearfell harvest size on beetle (Coleoptera) biodiversity in plantation forests A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Canterbury by S.M. Pawson University of Canterbury 2006 ii Paper produced from 84% FSC certified forest resources iii Abstract Compared to natural forests, fast-growing plantations of exotic species such as Pinus radiata are often perceived as marginal habitat or unsuitable habitat for most native species. By studying Coleoptera (beetles) in a variety of landscape elements (pasture, native forest and different aged Pinus radiata stands) in a highly modified and fragmented landscape in New Zealand I aimed to determine the value of exotic plantation forests for native biodiversity, and how these species are affected by different sized clearfell harvest areas. Pitfall trap sampling of beetles showed that plantation forest stands can provide suitable complimentary habitat to native forest for many species. Rarefied species richness of Carabidae, Scarabaeidae and Scolytinae was not significantly different between habitats, however, habitat types differed significantly in their beetle community composition. Comparing different production habitats, Pinus radiata stands had a beetle community composition most similar to native forest. However, a small minority of species, e.g., Dichrochile maura, were restricted to native forest habitat highlighting the importance of retaining indigenous ecosystems within plantations. Unlike human modified habitats, native forests did not provide suitable habitat for exotic species. Clearfell harvesting is controversial and its impact on biodiversity is a key constraint for many forest certification programs, such as that administered by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). -

WILL Essig Museum of Entomolgy, ESPM - Insect Biology, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 [email protected] ABSTRACT A new species, Trirammatus torqueotrochantus is described from Caramávida, Chile. Males of this species are distinguished by unique femur-length, twisted and falcate trochanters, which are a form unlike that of any described pterostichine. Both sexes are recognizable from other species of Trirammatus by the combination of short metepisternum and bicolored legs. The species is included in Trirammatus based on the shared condition of having paired sub-tarsal claw setae. The status and characters of genera thought to be near relatives of Trirammatus, the evolution of elon- gate metatrochanters and their relationship to wedge-pushing are briefly discussed. The hind legs of T. torqueotrochantus, Pterostichus (Cylindrocharis) acutipes acutipes, P. (Steropus) moestus and Acanthoferonia ferox are illustrated to show relative trochanter lengths. Key words: Coleoptera, Carabidae, Trirammatus torqueotrochantus, new species, Chile INTRODUCTION Currently the genus Trirammatus Chaudoir includes 22 species arrayed in four subgenera: Trirammatus s. str.; Meraulax Tschitschérine, Plagioplatys Tschitschérine and Pachymor- phus Chaudoir. This assemblage of species and their division into these groups is entirely a historical vestige and inspection of type specimens and additional material has begun to reveal some clues as to a preferable and character-based system. As in many insect groups, this study of museum specimens suggests a significant undescribed diversity. -
