  • Climbing on Kangchenjunga Since 1955
JOSE LUIS BERMUDEZ Climbing on Kangchenjunga since 1955 he history of climbing on Kangchenjunga in the years immediately T after the first ascent is easily told. Nothing happened for almost twenty years. There were many reasons for this. The sheer remoteness of the mountain must surely be one, as must the political difficulties in getting permission to climb the mountain either from Sikkim or from Nepal. And it is understandable that in the late 1950s the attention of mountaineers should have been focused on the 8000-metre peaks that were still unclimbed. Kangchenjunga's status as a holy mountain was a further obstacle. So it is not entirely surprising that there were no expeditions to the Kangchenjunga massif between 1955 and 1973. When climbers did eventually return to Kangchenjunga they found obvious and formidable challenges. Kangchenjunga has four distinct sum mits over 8000m. 1 The 1955 expedition climbed the Main Peak, which is the highest at 8586m. But that still left three virgin summits which were not much shorter: the South Summit at 8476m, the Central Summit at 8482m and the West Summit (better known as Yalung Kang) at 8505m. Equally significant were the two routes that had been attempted on the Main Peak before the successful expedition. The route taken by the first ascensionists was the Yalung (SW) Face, approached from the Yalung gla cier on the Nepalese side of the frontier ridge. As emerged very clearly in the Seminar, the Yalung Face was not the route favoured by most previous attempts on the mountain. The three expeditions in the late 1920s and early 1930s had thought that the North Ridge was the key to the mountain.

Home is Where the Mountains Are Home is Where the Mountains Are The Remarkable Life of Sharon Wood The Remarkable Life of Sharon Wood In mountaineering Sharon Wood found a pursuit equal to her intensity and emotional courage. In coming to terms with the nature of peaks, Sharon discovered others who were not afraid to put their lives on the line in exchange for a glimpse of their deeper selves. She also found she possessed the ability to solve ever more complex and demanding climbing problems. While engaging in the most intense forms of inward and outward exploration, Sharon Wood and her climbing partners shaped an entire generation of Canadian alpinism. • Genre Bending Narrative, VALHALLA Tells the Tale of One Man’S Search for Satisfaction, Understanding, and Love in Some of the Deepest Snows on Earth
62 Years The last time Ken Brower traveled down the Yampa River in Northwest Colorado was with his father, David Brower, in 1952. This was the year his father became the first executive director of the Sierra Club and joined the fight against a pair of proposed dams on the Green River in Northwest Colorado. The dams would have flooded the canyons of the Green and its tributary, Yampa, inundating the heart of Dinosaur National Monument. With a conservation campaign that included a book, magazine articles, a film, a traveling slideshow, grassroots organizing, river trips and lobbying, David Brower and the Sierra Club ultimately won the fight ushering in a period many consider the dawn of modern environmentalism. 62 years later, Ken revisited the Yampa & Green Rivers to reflect on his father's work, their 1952 river trip, and how we will confront the looming water crisis in the American West. 9 Minutes. Filmmaker: Logan Bockrath 2010 Brower Youth Awards Six beautiful films highlight the activism of The Earth Island Institute’s 2011 Brower Youth Award winners, today’s most visionary and strategic young environmentalists. The activity often occurs in protected areas where agency managers are charged with the inherently conflicting mandate of protecting the natural environment and facilitating high quality recreational experiences. Effective management of such mountaineering environs is predicated on meaningful understanding of the users’ motivations, expectations and behaviours.

  • Thoughts About Everest
Thoughts About Everest S t a c y A l l i s o n a n d G e o f f r e y T a b i n M Y FIRST EXPOSURE to the great Himalayan peaks was on the 1982 American Women’s Himalayan Expedition to Ama Dablam’s Southwest Ridge. As I stood atop Ama Dablam, I had my first glimpse of Everest. I was awed by its enormousness looming another 6500 feet above me. It inspired me, for a brief moment, to fantasize standing on its summit. But immediately, I realized that was for the “Big Boys” and the task at hand was getting myself off Ama Dablam. Three years later, I’d almost forgotten my fantasy until I discovered that a good friend, whom I hadn’t seen or talked to for five years, had a permit for the direct North Face. I called Scott Fischer right away, awkwardly apologizing for not keeping in touch; at the same time I asked to be considered for his 1987 Everest trip. I was invited a month later. The budget for this expedition was a staggering $250,000. We decided to use the possibility of the First American Woman Summiting as our major angle for fund-raising. At the time, I didn’t think much about it. If it helped raise money, that was fine by me. I knew that as soon as we left the United States, gender would be inconsequential. I will admit that the idea of being the first was rather intriguing. Having spent so much time and energy in fund-raising with this thought, the possibility became a big part of my mind-set and an association with my person.

While not a single climber reached the top of Gasherbrum I, a total of 25 summited K2 and were the fIrst to do so since July 1997. June's fine weather was rather too early for most expeditions to mount a summit bid, and by the next suitable period towards the end of July a signifIcant number of teams had already run out of time and left for home. Inevitably, there were several near misses but fortunately only one death. Sadly, this occurred to one of Spain's best-known mountaineers, Felix Iiiurrategi. The weather in the Karakoram was good throughout most of June and excellent in the latter part of the month. After this, however, the only clear weather window occurred briefly towards the end of July, with August generally bad owing to the influence of a heavy monsoon, and early September only marginally better. Access to Concordia for the 8000m peak base camps was easy early in the season owing to the low winter snowfall, but dry conditions on lower peaks and glaciers presented problems for numerous expeditions. The Baltoro SOOO-metre peaks Gasherbrum IT (803Sm) A total of 45 climbers representing 10 expeditions reached the 8035m summit of Gasherbrum IT, all between 20 and 30 July.
