I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! 1 Introduction “I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity” is a frequently quoted passage from one of Edgar Allan Poe’s letters to George Washington Eveleth in 1848 (The Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore, Poe’s letters). The question that is relevant here is how Poe expressed his interest in psychology in his works and which psychological phenomena were incorporated that collide with psychoanalysis. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that Poe anticipated Freudian imagery, although Freud did not start publishing his works until roughly fifty years after Poe’s death. Furthermore, this paper will show how Poe’s writing style mirrors ideas in Freudian theories and how his short stories can be interpreted through the lens of different aspects of Freud’s psychoanalysis. The questions that these previous statements conjure, are: Why Freud? What do these theories entail? What makes psychoanalysis a valid method to interpret literature? And how can this be applied to literature that was produced before psychoanalysis was even a concept? How does Poe approach psychological elements and in what way does he incorporate them into his works? All of these questions will be answered in the course of this study. For now, I would like to make some remarks on the structure of this paper. The introduction will provide a short overview on Freudian theories. Furthermore, central research questions and a general introduction into the history of American psychology will be the focus of this chapter. At the end of the introduction, I will explain why this topic is still fascinating and why writing this paper is relevant for literary research. In a further step, the Gothic era with its characteristics and Poe’s idiosyncrasies in his adaption of Gothic writing will constitute the pillars of the second chapter. The third chapter focuses on general, analytic parallels between Freud and Poe, which serve to establish a connection between the authors and clarify the similarities in their relationship to literature. It will also provide an introduction into the uncanny. In the fourth chapter, the analysis and close reading of “The Fall of the House of Usher” is supported with certain aspects of Freudian theories. The focus lies on the representation of Freud’s tripartite model of the ‘id’, the ‘ego’ and the ‘super-ego’. Furthermore, the conflict that may arise between these three instances will be examined. The fifth chapter consists of an analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Hanna Seiringer Cat.” This story incorporates elements, which deal with the fear of castration and ‘transference’, two different theories by Freud. In the sixth and last chapter of the analysis, Poe’s “The Imp of the Perverse” will be investigated. This chapter is the closest to Freud’s studies, because it is a short study of a drive that, according to Poe’s narrator, everybody has encountered at some point in their lives. With the help of Freud’s ‘pleasure principle’ and his theory of two innate distinct drives, the true meaning of ‘the imp of the perverse’ will be defined. Furthermore, the above- mentioned tales will be closely examined for indicators of the uncanny. Last, the conclusion will sum up the main results that were gathered by means of the analysis and tie up loose ends. First, I would like to briefly introduce the concepts by Sigmund Freud, which will be used in order to analyze the texts. Freud’s idea of the psychical apparatus (“Psychical Apparatus”, Oxford Reference. A Dictionary of Psychology) promotes that three instances ‘live’ in every person’s mind. He distinguishes the conscious from the unconscious and describes the consciousness as the surface of the psyche (cf. Freud, Complete Works, 3953): “All perceptions which are received from without (sense-perception) and from within –

    Jenna Davis 1 Beyond Castration: Recognizing Female Desire and Subjectivity in the Oedipus Complex Je=aDavis Critical Theory Swathmore College December 2011 Jenna Davis 2 CHAPTER 1 Argument and Methodology Psychoanalysis was developed by Austrian physician Sigmund Freud in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. One of Freud's most celebrated theories was that of the Oedipus complex, which explores the psychic structures that underlie sexual development. In the following chapters I will be examining the Oedipal and preoedipal stages of psychosexual development, drawing out their implicit gendered assumptions with the help of modern feminist theorists and psychoanalysts. I am pursuing a Lacanian reading of Freud, in which the biological roles of mother and father are given structural importance, so that whomever actually occupies these roles is less important than their positional significance. After giving a brief history of the evolution of psychoanalytic theory in the first chapter, I move on in the second chapter to explicate Freud's conception of the Oedipus complex (including the preoedipal stage) and the role of the Oedipal myth, making use of theorist Teresa de Lauretis. In the third chapter, I look at several of Freud's texts on femininity and female sexuality. I will employ Simone de Beauvoir, Kaja Silverman and de Lauretis to discuss male and female investments in femininity and the identities that are open to women. After this, Jessica Benjamin takes the focus away from individuals and incorporates the other in her theory of intersubjectivity. I end chapter three with Helene Cixous, Julia Kristeva and Luce Irigaray, who all attest to the necessity of symbolic female representation--Cixous proposes a specifically female manner of writing called ecriture feminine, Kristeva introduces the semiotic realm to contend with Lacan's symbolic realm, and Irigaray believes in the need for corporeal Jenna Davis 3 representation for women within a female economy.

Development of the Libido and Sexual Organizations I AM under the impression that I did not succeed in convincing you of the significance of perversions for our conception of sexuality. I should therefore like to clarify and add as much as I can. 1 It was not only perversions that necessitated an alteration of our conception of sexuality, which aroused such vehement contradiction. The study of infantile sexuality did a great deal more along that line, and its close correspondence to the perversions became decisive for us. But the origin of the expressions of infantile sexuality, unmistakable as they are in later years of childhood, seem to be lost in obscurity. Those who disregard the history of evolution and analytic coherence, will dispute the potency of the sexual factor and will infer the agency of generalized forces. Do not forget that as yet we have no generally acknowledged criterion for identifying the sexual nature of an occurrence, unless we assume that we can find it in a relation to the functions of reproduction, and this we must reject as too narrow. The biological criteria, such as the periodicities of twenty-three and twenty-eight days, suggested by W. Fliess, are by no means established; the specific chemical nature which we can possibly assume for sexual occurrences is still to be discovered. The sexual perversions of adults, on the other hand, are tangible and unambiguous. As their generally accepted nomenclature shows, they are undoubtedly sexual in character; whether we designate them as signs of degeneration, or otherwise, no one has yet had the courage to place them outside the phenomena of sex.

His theories involved many things including psychoanalysis, dreams, emotions, and personality. Psychoanalysis included his dynamic theory of personality and the psychosexual stages of personality development. Dynamic Theory of Personality Freud explained his theory by viewing the conscious, preconscious, and the unconscious as an iceberg. He describes the preconscious and the unconscious as a “harmony of psychoid” and the conscious as “resting on perception of the most immediate and certain” (Freud 1962). The unconscious is under the water, the preconscious is in the middle, and the conscious is on top of the water.

These theorists, referred to as neo-Freudians, generally agreed with Freud that childhood experiences matter, but deemphasized sex, focusing more on the social environment and effects of culture on personality. Freud’s writings were controversial, but they soon attracted followers, mostly young, ambitious physicians who formed an inner circle around their strong minded leader. These pioneering psychoanalysts, whom we often call neo- Freudians, accepted Freud’s basic ideas: the personality structures of id, ego, and superego; the importance of the unconscious; the shaping of personality in childhood; and the dynamics of anxiety and the defense mechanisms. But they broke off from Freud in two important ways. First, they placed more emphasis on the conscious mind’s role in interpreting experience and in coping with the environment. And second, they doubted that sex and aggression were all - consuming motivations. Instead, they tended to emphasize loftier motives and social interactions. 3 Neo-Freudian’s views 1. Poff, MA, MSW The Carter-Jenkins Center Tampa, Florida 2-26-2018 Part 4: Oedipus Rediscovered in Anthropology and Effaced in Contemporary Psychoanalysis Introduction We’ve seen so far that for much of the 20th century Bronislaw Malinowski’s anthropological critique, Sex and Repression in Savage Society (1927) remained the most influential argument against the universal Oedipus complex. Its impact was felt profoundly within psychoanalysis and across the social sciences. On the basis of his field study in the Trobriand Islands, Malinowski claimed to have discovered a distinct ‘matrilineal complex’ and to have proved that the Oedipus complex was only one type of nuclear family complex. He further argued that Freud’s theory was an example of ethnocentrism and that oedipal conflicts reflected a pathology of Western patriarchy. So far from being universal the Oedipus complex was a symptom of paternal authority out of harmony with human biology. By contrast the ‘matrilineal complex’ was far closer to an ideal state of human nature according to Malinowski. In this final part of Lecture One on the Universal Oedipus complex we’ll look more closely at how Malinowski’s critique of oedipal theory (and those that have followed his argument) eventually failed to hold up under much delayed scrutiny within its own discipline, only to be revived in ever new forms within psychoanalysis right up to the present. This odd twist in the history of the controversy is only one of the many ironies that have characterized it, as I have 2 tried to show.
