    2021 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships January 11-21, 2021 Las Vegas | The Orleans Arena Media Information and Story Ideas The U.S. Figure Skating Championships, held annually since 1914, is the nation’s most prestigious figure skating event. The competition crowns U.S. champions in ladies, men’s, pairs and ice dance at the senior and junior levels. The 2021 U.S. Championships will serve as the final qualifying event prior to selecting and announcing the U.S. World Figure Skating Team that will represent Team USA at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Stockholm. The marquee event was relocated from San Jose, California, to Las Vegas late in the fall due to COVID-19 considerations. San Jose meanwhile was awarded the 2023 Toyota U.S. Championships, marking the fourth time that the city will host the event. Competition and practice for the junior and Championship competitions will be held at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The event will take place in a bubble format with no spectators. The Four Continents Championships 2017 serve as a test event for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir (CAN) dance off with gold Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir of Canada danced off with the gold medal, taking home their third Four Continents title. USA’s Maia Shibutani/ Alex Shibutani earned the silver medal and their teammates Madison Chock/Evan Bates claimed the bronze. Virtue/Moir delivered a strong Free Dance to “Pilgrims on a Long Journey” and “Latch”, collecting a level four for their lifts, the twizzles, the diagonal step sequence and the spin and a level three for the circular step sequence. The 2014 Olympic silver medalists set a new personal best with 117.20 points and accumulated 196.95 points overall. “What an honor for Tessa and I to be Four Continents Champions. It was obviously a goal of ours just to qualify for this event at the beginning of the year. It was such a great competition. Today was an interesting performance for us as we left a couple of points on the board, but it was really special for us to be in that venue.

    2019 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships January 13 – 20, 2019 Saint John, New Brunswick A not-for-profit organization, Skate Canada/Patinage Canada is the oldest and largest figure skating organization in the world and is recognized by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) as the governing body for the sport of figure skating in Canada. Skate Canada/Patinage Canada is dedicated to creating a nation of skaters both recreationally and competitively. Skate NB / Patinage NB is the governing section in New Brunswick and is comprised of 35 clubs organized into regions. Region 4 encompasses Saint John, Quispamsis and Sussex. The 2019 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships will be hosted by Region 4 from January 13-20, 2019, at Harbour Station and QPlex, respectively. The championships will feature approximately 250 of the country’s best skaters in the men, women, pairs, and dance disciplines, competing in three levels: senior, junior, and novice. This will be the first national championships following Canada’s very successful 2018 Olympic Winter Games. It is expected that 2018 World Bronze medalists and Olympians, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, will be competing in Saint John in senior dance. Additionally, Olympians Gabrielle Daleman, Keegan Messing, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier and the next cohort of Canadian skating talent will be featured. The pre-eminent national championships will see athletes vie for spots on the Skate Canada National Team and the Canadian teams that will compete at the 2019 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, 2019 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and 2019 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

The Four Continents Championships 2017 serve as a test event for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir (CAN) dance to lead in Short Dance Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir of Canada danced to the lead in the Short Dance. USA’s Maia Shibutani/ Alex Shibutani and Madison Chock/Evan Bates follow in second and third. Dancing to “Kiss”, “Five Women” and “Purple Rain” by Prince, Virtue/Moir picked up a level four for the side by side step sequence, the Blues pattern, the twizzles and the spin, only the partial step sequence was rated a level three. The ISU Grand Prix Final Champions scored 79.75 points. “Tessa and I were pretty happy actually with our performance. We made a little bit of a technical error in the middle of it, so it’s not ideal obviously, especially in the short program where we really have to capitalize on those technical points. Skate Canada International is the second of six events of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2019/2020. Hanyu (JPN) dazzles in Men’s Short Program at Skate Canada Two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan swept aside the competition in the Men’s Short Program at Skate Canada in Kelowna on Friday, winning with 20 points to spare in a stunning performance. Grand Prix debutant Camden Pulkinen (USA) surprisingly came second ahead of Canada’s Nam Nguyen. Hanyu opened his dramatic performance to “Otonal” by Raul di Blasio with a quadruple Salchow and a triple Axel followed by a quadruple-triple toeloop combination. The 2019 world silver medalist collected a level four for his spins and earned a mammoth 109.60 points to the delight of the enthralled crowd. “It was not so great, but I felt I did my best today. I felt calm today, but I am not sure if my calmness led to me being more focused,” the two-time world champion explained. Pulkinen produced a quadruple toeloop, triple Axel, triple Lutz-triple toeloop and solid spins in his routine to “Caruso” to set a personal best of 89.05 points.

And you said that the program components and the technical elements were very similar in terms of – it could go either way. But you said not the choreography – you said, “regardless of the result, the difference between Virtue and Moir’s Carmen and Davis and White’s Notre Dame programs are like comparing a fine old cheddar cheese to Kraft slices. Both are yummy, both have their place, but one is definitely finer than the other.” Elaborate.
