The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. We are delighted that you have joined us for our “Russian Roundup” concert! We have a lot of exciting things in store for this year. We are adding a matinee performance of our popular “Holiday Pops” concert, will be showcasing some of our own talented musicians in the “Concertos and More” concert, and will be partnering with the Las Vegas Master Singers to perform the “Best of Broadway and Opera”. We hope you will be able to join us for all of these amazing concerts! Our three youth ensembles are also keeping busy this year! They have concerts scheduled in December and May, as well as several outreach events. The Youth Octet will perform at the Cholla branch library in Novem- ber and all youth members at the Outlets at Anthem in December. Please come out to hear these talented students at one of their concerts or out- reach events! On a personal note, today’s concert is special for me. In 1988, I had the opportunity to travel to the Soviet Union with my high school orchestra. The U.S.S.R. was just starting to open its borders for cultural exchanges, and it was a tremendous opportunity for us to connect with people of a different culture through the language of music. -

BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2016 / VOLUME 4 / ARTICLE Article On the Topics and Style of Soviet Animated Films ÜLO PIKKOV, Estonian Academy of Arts; email: [email protected] 16 DOI: 10.1515/bsmr-2017-0002 BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2016 / VOLUME 4 / ARTICLE ABSTRACT This article provides a survey of Soviet animation and analyses the thematic and stylistic course of its develop- ment. Soviet animated film emerged and materialised in synch with the fluctuations of the region’s political climate and was directly shaped by it. A number of trends and currents of Soviet animation also pertain to other Eastern European countries. After all, Eastern Europe constituted an integrated cultural space that functioned as a single market for the films produced across it by filmmakers who interacted in a professional regional network of film education, events, festivals, publications etc. Initially experimental, post-revolutionary Russian ani- mation soon fell under the sway of the Socialist Realist discourse, along with the rest of Soviet art, and quickly crystallised as a didactic genre for children. Disney’s para- digm became its major source of inspiration both in terms of visual style and thematic scope, despite the fact that Soviet Union was regarded as the ideological opposite of the Western way of life and mindset. The Soviet animation industry was spread across different studios and republics that adopted slightly varied production practices and tolerated different degrees of artistic freedom. Studios in the smaller republics, such as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in particular, stood out for making films that were more ideologically complicated than those produced in Moscow. -

How does this form shape our understanding of culture? How does this form shape our understanding of culture? How does it construct race, class and gender? How does it construct a vision of society? We will attempt to deepen our understanding of how it is that soap opera simultaneously exercises enormous appeal and elicits scornful dismissal. To this end, we will delve 10,00 into theories of melodtama and will examine the precursors of soap opera, such as the nineteenth century novel, the grand opera, and Hollywood fIlm melodrama. Throughout we will be making comparisons to the specifics of soap opera, from 1930s radio serials to contemporary daytime and 10,30 nighttime television soap operas. Students should come to this course prepared to take soap operas seriously and with a willingness to distance themselves critically from visual texts. Class will meet once a week on Thursday 1230-320 in ASH 111. Indeed, whether in proverbs, music, history, painting or any number of other Russian cultural elements, the balalaika remains a singular feature of popular recognition. Pity the student trying to find a Russian tale that doesn’t include a balalaika-playing character. -
The Nineteenth-Century Russian Operatic Roots of Prokofyev’S
THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY RUSSIAN OPERATIC ROOTS OF PROKOFYEV’S WAR AND PEACE by TERRY LYNN DEAN, JR. (Under the Direction of David Edwin Haas) ABSTRACT More than fifty years after Prokofyev’s death, War and Peace remains a misunderstood composition. While there are many reasons why the opera remains misunderstood, the primary reason for this is the opera’s genesis in Stalinist Russia and his obligation to uphold the “life-affirming” principles of the pro-Soviet aesthetic, Socialist Realism, by drawing inspiration from the rich heritage “Russian classical” opera—specifically the works of Glinka, Chaikovsky, and Musorgsky. The primary intent of this dissertation is to provide new perspectives on War and Peace by examining the relationship between the opera and the nineteenth-century Russian opera tradition. By exploring such a relationship, one can more clearly understand how nineteenth-century Russian operas had a formative effect on Prokofyev’s opera aesthetic. An analysis of the impact of the Russian operatic tradition on War and Peace will also provide insights into the ways in which Prokofyev responded to official Soviet demands to uphold the canon of nineteenth-century Russian opera as models for contemporary composition and to implement aspects of 19th-century compositional practice into 20th-century compositions. Drawing upon the critical theories of Soviet musicologist Boris Asafyev, this study demonstrates that while Prokofyev maintained his distinct compositional voice, he successfully aligned his work with the nineteenth-century tradition. Moreover, the study suggests that Prokofyev’s solution to rendering Tolstoy’s novel as an opera required him to utilize a variety of traits characteristic of the nineteenth-century Russian opera tradition, resulting in a work that is both eclectic in musical style and dramaturgically effective. -

02_EHQ 31/2 articles 26/2/01 12:57 pm Page 231 Caroline Brooke Soviet Music in the International Arena, 1932–41 Soviet musical life underwent radical transformation in the 1930s as the Communist Party of the Soviet Union began to play an active role in shaping artistic affairs. The year 1932 saw the dis- banding of militant factional organizations such as the RAPM (Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians) which had sprung up on the ‘musical front’ during the 1920s and had come to dominate Soviet musical life during the period of the first Five Year Plan (1928–32). 1932 was also the year that saw the con- solidation of all members of the musical profession into centralized Unions of Soviet Composers. Despite such compre- hensive administrative restructuring, however, it would be a mis- take to regard the 1930s as an era of steadily increasing political control over Soviet music. This was a period of considerable diversity in Soviet musical life, and insofar as a coherent Party line on music existed at all at this time, it lacked consistency on a great many issues. One of the principal reasons for the contra- dictory nature of Soviet music policy in the 1930s was the fact that the conflicting demands of ideological prejudice and politi- cal pragmatism frequently could not be reconciled. This can be illustrated particularly clearly through a consideration of the interactions between music and the realm of foreign affairs. Soviet foreign policy in the musical sphere tended to hover between two stools. Suspicion of the bourgeois capitalist West, together with the conviction that Western culture was going through the final stages of degeneration, fuelled the arguments of those who wanted to keep Soviet music and musical life pure and uncontaminated by such Western pollutants as atonalism, neo- classicism and the more innovative forms of jazz. -
