    3 Pars Pro Toto Character Animation and the Work of the Anonymous Artist Everyone does his or her task on the conveyor belt, performing a partial function without grasping the totality. —Siegfried Kracauer1 The single frame is the basic unit of film just as bricks are the basic unit of brick houses. —Robert Breer2 DELIBERATE MISTAKES In late March 1937, in order to meet the booming demand for Popeye cartoons, the management at Fleischer Studios called for the production process to be sped up. In-betweeners, the animators tasked with drawing the stages of movement that come in between key poses, were expected to double their daily output, from twenty sketches per day to forty.3 But tensions between management and labor at the studio were running high, and the in-betweeners did not comply. Instead, they countered with a “slowdown” strike, which meant, effectively, continuing to produce drawings at the regular rate.4 In the month that followed, fifteen anima- tors were fired for participating in the slowdown, and on May 6 the Commercial Artists and Designers Union authorized a full walkout of the studio. The story of what happened next has already been told, as have the stories of other labor conflicts in the US animation industry—most notably, the 1941 strike at Walt Disney Studios.5 But I want to focus on what didn’t happen. By this I do not mean a counterfactual history, at least not in the traditional sense of the term. Rather, I wish to imagine what is left unsaid in these narratives, which tell us only what went on behind the scenes.

Especially when one considers the era in which these figures were first created by the Walt Disney Studio, in the 1920s and 1930s, why are they portrayed without full clothing? The obvious answer, of course, is that they are animals, and animals do not wear clothes. But these are no ordinary animals: in most cases, they do wear clothing - some clothing, at least - and they walk on two legs, talk in a more or less intelligible fashion, and display a number of other anthropomorphic traits. If they are essentially animals, why do they wear clothing at all? On the other hand, if these characters are more human than animal, as suggested by other behavioral traits - they walk, talk, work, read, and so on - why are they not more often fully clothed? To answer these questions I undertook three major research strategies used to gather evidence: interpretive textual analysis of 321 cartoons; secondary analysis of interviews conducted with the animators who created the Disney characters; and historical and archival research on the Disney Company and on the times and context in which it functioned.

Suggestions apply to either ‘3D’ (upright puppets/characters) or paper/card 2D cut-out technique when creating animations. FOCUS ON ANIMATION: In the beginning there was…ANIMATION TIMELINE 30, 000 BC Prehistoric man in Lascaux, France, paints on cave walls the images of animals in motion. The animals are depicted with more than four legs to suggest movement. 2, 000 BC Egyptians create murals showing scenes from Egyptian life. Many murals show series of characters in slightly altered positions, suggesting movement. 1824 Persistence of vision (POV) discovered by P Roget. 1825 Thaumatrope (Greek ‘wheel of magic’) invented by Dr John Ayrton Paris. 1832 Phenakistoscope (Greek ‘optical deceiver’) invented by Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau. 1838 William Henry Fox Tablot develops the camera obscura. 2 1861 Kinematoscope patented by Coleman Sellers. Uses a paddle-wheel to project continuous motion through a stereoscopic viewer. 1877 Charles Emile Reynaud develops the Praxinoscope: moving images, which could be viewed, by a number of individuals at the same time by the use of mirrors to reflect the drawings. 1880 Eadweard Muybridge carries out his best-known experiment with 24 cameras and trip wires to record horse movement. 1882 Etienne-Jules Marey uses a camera gun to film birds in flight and analyse movement. 1882 Eastman-Kodak invents celluloid film. 1890s Friese-Green and Mortimer Evans develop a ‘box- projector’ which could project four to five frames per second.
