Uncovering the Anti-Queer Sentiment in the Dianetic Perspective At present, there is a groundswell of public sensational interest in the subject of Scientology; and, in fact, in the time since I began this research paper, a nine-episode documentary series has premiered and reached finale on A&E titled “Scientology and the Aftermath”— a personal project hosted by sitcom celebrity, ex-Scientologist, and author of Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, Leah Remini.1 I could not begin to enumerate the myriad exposés/memoirs of ex-Scientologists that have been published in recent years nor could I emphasize enough the rampant conspiracy theories that are at the disposal of any curious mind on what many have termed “the cult” of Scientology.

Surviving with Spirituality: An Analysis of Scientology in a Neoliberal World Abstract The neoliberal system has expanded fertile ground for markets to produce and distribute spiritual commodities. This paper examines how the Church of Scientology profits by selling spiritual goods to the modern neoliberal consumer. To accumulate data, I conducted interviews and participated in various rituals at the Church of Scientology in St. Paul, Minnesota. I outline and examine the data in four sections: the initiation process of the latent member, their consumption patterns in the Church, social interactions between members, and how these interactions bridge the Church into the public arena. I conclude that the Church is a market institution that promotes neoliberal ideology. Introduction “God is dead!” Friedrich Nietzsche declared in a narrative about a madman preaching in an 18 th century marketplace (1954: 95).

  • The Gnostic L. Ron Hubbard: Was He Influenced by Aleister Crowley?
$ The Journal of CESNUR $ The Gnostic L. Ron Hubbard: Was He Influenced by Aleister Crowley? Massimo Introvigne CESNUR (Center for Studies on New Religions) [email protected] ABSTRACT: Scientology was defined by its founder himself, L. Ron Hubbard, as a “Gnostic religion.” In 1969, however, a Trotskyist Australian journalist and an opponent of Scientology, Alex Mitchell, disclosed in a Sunday Times article that Hubbard had been involved, in 1945–46, in the activities of California’s Agapé Lodge of the Ordo Templi Orientis, an occult organization led by British magus Aleister Crowley. The article generated a cottage industry of exposés criticizing Hubbard as having been a member of a “black magic” organization. Some scholars also believe Hubbard to have been influenced by Crowley in his subsequent writings about Dianetics and Scientology. While conflicting narratives exist about why exactly Hubbard participated in the activities of the Agapé Lodge and his leader, the rocket scientist Jack Parsons, the article argues that Hubbard researched magic well before 1945, came to conclusions about the role of magic in Western culture that are largely shared by 21st century scholars, and created with Scientology a system that is inherently religious rather than magic. KEYWORDS: Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, Babalon Working, Aleister Crowley, Jack Parsons, John Whiteside Parsons, O.T.O., Agapé Lodge. Scientology and Gnosticism Some weeks ago, I was visited by a leading Chinese scholar of religion, Zhang Xinzhang from Zhejiang University. Zhang is a scholar of Gnosticism and a critic of movements the Chinese government identifies as xie jiao (“heterodox teachings,” sometimes translated, less accurately, as “evil cults”).

MARBURG JOURNAL OF RELIGION, Vol. 21, No. 1 (2019) 1 Scientology’s Legal System Phil Lord LL.B. (McGill, Dean's List), B.C.L. (McGill, Dean's List), ACIArb. This paper provides an overview of the legal system of the religion of Scientology. To the members of the religion, this legal system supersedes and fully displaces the mainstream legal system. Scientology’s legal system is self-contained and independent, with rules, enforcement mechanisms, and correctional facilities. The overview provided in this paper will be useful to courts and to further research in the nascent yet vital field of Scientological legal research. The contents are as follows: INTRODUCTION; I. SOURCING; II. WITHIN AND WITHOUT; III. RULES; IV. ENFORCEMENT MECHANISMS; V. CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES; CONCLUSION. MARBURG JOURNAL OF RELIGION, Vol. 21, No. 1 (2019) 2 INTRODUCTION This paper provides a broad overview of the legal system of the religion of Scientology.1 No legal scholar has yet provided such an overview. This fact is somewhat perplexing, as the religion was founded some seventy years ago.2 More broadly, the literature on Scientology is far sparser than that on other recently founded religions such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints3 (two religions which count far more adherents than 1 I am grateful to Prof. Mark Antaki, Alec Sader and Olivier Lirette for their thoughtful comments on earlier drafts. In conducting research for this paper, I have had the opportunity to interact with several Scientologists. The Scientologists who I met at the Montreal and Los Angeles churches have all been kind and helpful.

Name: Church of Scientology Scientology means "knowing about knowing," from the Latin word scio and the Greek word logos. 1 2. Founder: Lafayette Ronald (L. Ron) Hubbard 3. Date of Birth/Death: March 13, 1911/January 24, 1986 4. Birth Place: Tilden, Nebraska 5. Year Founded: 1954 6. Biography of Founder: According to texts published by the Church of Scientology and its web page pertaining primarily to its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, always referred to as L. Ron by Scientologists, experienced early in his life the many facets of the human mind. At the age of 12, he learned from Commander Joseph C. Thompson, who was the first military official to study under Sigmund Freud in Vienna, Austria, the theory of psychoanalysis. Hubbard was also influenced by his many world journeys to exotic locales, thus gaining an appreciation for Eastern philosophies rooted in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. His studies in mathematics, engineering, and nuclear physics at George Washington University generated a scientific background to his beliefs in the human mind, although his studies did not earn him a degree. As a naval officer during World War II, he suffered injuries that left him blind and crippled. During his recovery, he once again examined Freudian psychoanalytical theory and Eastern philosophies. He credits the eventual cure of his disabilities to his findings about the human mind during this time, findings that became the central elements of a religious doctrine he later called Dianetics.

Church of Scientology An Evaluation from the Theological Perspective of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod August, 2005 (updated May 2014) History, Beliefs, and Practices Identity: The Church of Scientology is a new religious movement created by L. Ron Hubbard who drew from psychological theories (called “Dianetics”) and a mixture of ideas developed from Eastern religious philosophies.1 Scientology calls itself “a religious philosophy in its highest meaning.”2 The Scientology religion promises “workable answers to the problems people face in their lives”: “It is concerned with nothing less than the full rehabilitation of the thetan (see below), to increase spiritual awareness, native capabilities and certainty of his own immortality.” Scientology claims that its axioms define “the underlying causes and principles of reality as we know it, and thus unlock the very riddle of existence.” 3 According to L. Ron Hubbard, “Scientology has accomplished the goal of religion expressed in Man’s written history, the freeing of the soul with wisdom.”4 Founder: Lafayette Ronald (L. Ron) Hubbard (1911-86) Statistics: Estimates of the number of members and adherents vary widely. One estimate: 5-6 million worldwide History: Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, born in Tilden, Nebraska in 1911, was the founder of Scientology. While the details of Hubbard’s life have been in dispute, it is claimed that he traveled widely during his youth (his father a career Navy man), acquainting himself with Beijing magicians, Tibetan lamas, Mongolian bandits, Pygmy huntsmen and shamans from Borneo. He returned to the U.S. in 1929, completed his education, and was accepted as a student of mathematics and engineering at George Washington University (though he never graduated).
