  • Making Amusement the Vehicle of Instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900
1 ‘Making amusement the vehicle of instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900 PhD Thesis submitted by Lesley Jane Delaney UCL Department of English Literature and Language 2012 SIGNED DECLARATION 2 I, Lesley Jane Delaney confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’.

  • “Mirabili Visioni”: from Movable Books to Movable Texts Gianfranco Crupi
“Mirabili visioni”: from movable books to movable texts Gianfranco Crupi To Ek because “the voice of her eyes is deeper than all roses” Introduction Movable books are hand-crafted books created for a wide range of different purposes (teaching, mnemonics, play, fortune telling, etc.) including mechanical or paratextual devices demanding or soliciting the interaction of the reader. Recipients are called on to activate the mechanical device or system incorporated into the paper pages or parchment, which add 2- or 3-dimensional, kinetic, dissolving and other visual effects to the iconic and textual representation. The interactivity justifying the generic yet effective name of movable books for this type of published products is obtained mainly by: the reader moving some elements of the support (volvella, flap; revolving picture; metamorphosis book or harlequinade; carousel book; dissolving picture); the sequential arrangement of images held together by tabs, opening the book in a bellow-fashion (peep show book or tunnel book); the reader flicking rapidly and sequentially through the pages, animating the represented figures to create the illusion of movement (flip book); the decomposition of the support, adding a three-dimensional effect to the portrayed scenes (pop-up, scenic book, stand-up, V-fold, toy book, action book, etc.). These JLIS.it Vol. 7, n. 1 (January 2016) DOI: 10.4403/jlis.it-11611 G. Crupi, “Mirabili visioni” … operations become a physical, multi-sensory as well as an intellectual experience for the reader, transforming the mechanical or paratextual device created by the author into a semiotic and communicative space enhancing the semantic value of the text and generating original and totally unexpected iconic reading spaces.

  • Early Children's Books: the Fox Collection at San Francisco Public Library by Ruth Mcgurk
Early Children's Books: The Fox Collection at San Francisco Public Library by Ruth McGurk An essay about the Early Childrens' Books of the Fox Collection Fox Collection: Introduction San Francisco holds a unique archive for the study of early children's books, which will interest scholars of printing, parents, artists, writers, or anyone curious about the book arts. It wasn't until the eighteenth century that children began to be treated differently from adults and a special class of literature beyond ABCs was provided for them. The George M. Fox Collection of Early Children's Books is housed at the Marjorie G. and Carl W. Stern Book Arts and Special Collections Center at the San Francisco Public Library. Donated in 1978, it consists of over 2000 volumes of mostly nineteenth -century 1 picture books. It was donated by the father of George King Fox of Pacific Book Auctions who also serves as the auctioneer at PCBA's biennial auction. Fox the elder worked for the Milton Bradley toy company, which had purchased the children's book publishing company McLoughlin Brothers. Fox acquired the archives of McLoughlin Brothers, which itself was the successor to Elton and Company, publisher of valentines, toy and juvenile books. Fox then expanded his sights to early color children's books in general. For those of a scholarly bent, the Fox collection is an untapped trove of multiple copies of the same titles, nearly complete runs of long-running series and, of course, the file copies of the McLoughlin Brothers. Some of the latter are titles acquired from English publishers, marked up with the editorial and illustrative changes thought necessary for the American market.

  • A Bibliography American Children's Books Printed Prior to 1821
A Bibliography of American Children's Books Printed Prior to 1821 BY D'ALTÉ A. WELCH Dedication To Clarence S. Brigham. A tribute to his remark- able genius for stimulating younger men to bibliographical endeavor, and also to having built the superb collection of early American Children's books of the American Antiquarian Society. Foreword OR nearly twenty years, we of the staff of the American F Antiquarian Society have watched with great interest the progress of this bibliography, and have enjoyed smoothing the way for the author. Of the importance of this work, there is no need to say anything; it is obviously one of the great bibliographi- cal contributions of our time. Professional bibliographers may complain that the objectives of Dr. Welch's odd descriptive meth- ods could have been attained in a more orthodox system, but our experience proves that it works, and that it is not too hard to grasp. In spite of his frank statement in the last paragraph of the Introduction that he included a few selected books because they caught his fancy, his criteria of selection are reasonable; few similar bibliographies contain so few evidences of whim or pride of possession. Probably old schoolbooks will now be marked up in price because they are "not in Welch," but potential buyers can reasonably argue that anything omitted by Welch is not "Chil- dren's Literature." Because of the many years over which this bibliography has been preparing, and because of many revisions and changes in style, it will inevitably show more errors and inconsistencies than are to be expected in a work which could follow some more ortho- dox plan; but to withhold it longer for further polishing would be to do a wrong to the world of bookmen.
