Wherever possible, quotations from the Scriptures of Tenrikyo—the Ofudesaki (The Tip of the Writing Brush), the Mikagura-uta (The Songs for the Service), and the Osashizu (The Divine Directions)—are taken from the latest editions of the official translations provided by Tenrikyo Church Headquarters. In cases where the author cites material from the Osashizu that is not contained in offcially approved English-language sources such as Selections from the Osashizu, a trial translation prepared by the author or translator is used. 2.1. The Foundress of Tenrikyo, Miki Nakayama, is referred to by Tenrikyo followers as “Oyasama” and written as 教祖 in Japanese. 2.2. The Honseki ( 本席 ) or the Seki ( 席 ) refers to Izō Iburi, who delivered the Osashizu, the Divine Directions, and granted the Sazuke. 2.3. The one who governs Tenrikyo shall be the Shinbashira ( 真柱 ). The first Shinbashira was Shinnosuke Nakayama, the second Shinbashira Shōzen Nakayama, and the third Shinbashira Zenye Nakayama, who was succeeded in 1998 by Zenji Nakayama. -

The extreme summer heat has finally dissipated and it has suddenly become very au- tumn-like in Oyasato. Today's Service, being on a beautiful Sunday, attracted many followers from all over the world to return and worship single-heartedly in the Ser- vice, with the Shinbashira as the core. The Shinbashira, in his prayer, said "while looking closely at the confusion of this world, beginning with myself, head ministers and yoboku, we should have an eye to- wards the future. In order for God the Parent to show us the Joyous Life world, we should continually put efforts into the overseas mission." He also mentioned, "This month is the month of putting strong efforts in spreading the fragrance. The last three days of the month will be the All Tenrikyo Nioigake Days and the truth of the teachings will be spread all over the world." Lastly, he prayed, "The path will widen as time passes. -

JOINER OCTOBER 31, 2016 1 INTRODUCTION Someone who visits Japan today, even for a short amount of time, will most likely feel caught in a tug-of-war between complacency and crisis. The list of crisis is most likely familiar to those who stay up to date with world news: Japan’s economy is eroding which is threatening the global marketplace. The old political system grew brittle, which, in turn, created a wide- spread feeling of cynicism. The continuation of globalization has created the expectation of material wealth, which has played a significant part in dissolving many Japanese traditions that people relied on to give them a sense of identity and purpose.1 But look in any Japanese city today or chat with someone on the street there and there is a broken sense of urgency about all of this. -

Introduction The East Asian nations have a similar historical background of modernization in the nineteenth century that none of them had been colonized under Western imperialism. Yet, all of them commonly experienced the socio-political hardship. Here in Oyasato, we have welcomed the season of fresh green leaves growing full, and today, many devoted followers from their respective countries and regions have returned to Jiba despite the cloudy, chilly day, as the May Monthly Service was per- formed spiritedly with minds in unity with the Shinbashira as the core. In the service prayer, the Shinbashira stated that as we ponder deeply about the var- ious incidences which we are currently shown throughout our society. All head minis- ters and Yoboku must be strict in reflecting upon ourselves and correct the direction of our minds, so as not to disappoint our Parent. Let us exert our efforts towards the construction of our minds, and be single-hearted with God in every situation. -

Submission Date: 04/01/2021 Acceptance Date: 15/03/2021 Abstract The study is devoted to the problem of adequate choice and use of linguistic means for translating into English the key philosophical, ethical and conceptual foundations of the Tenri religion (Japanese: Tenri-kyo / 天理教 /), one of the most ancient religions among the so-called "new" syncretic religions of modern Japan. The main goal of the research is to analyze the adequacy of the English translation of the system of religious terms, once created by the initiator of this teaching; Linguistic analysis and comparison were used as methods. During the study, the following results were obtained: authors have defined and illustrated with specific examples the key trend followed during the translation into English of the terminology inherent in the canonical Tenri religion texts, in particular Ofudesaki. Overall, the analysis of Japanese religious terms shows that Nakayama Miki’s efforts have brought to life a pretty clear and logical term system of a new religion, which, at the same time, heavily attracted ordinary residents of the Japanese islands with its poetry and imagery, and which, on the one hand, was totally innovative, and on the other hand, followed the traditions of Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. -

Conclusion 1. Introduction The Ofudesaki, The Tip of the Writing Brush, is a Tenrikyo scripture whose original copy has been preserved. It was written between 1869 and 1882 by the Foundress of Tenrikyo, Miki Nakayama,1 in waka poem style, comprising 1,711 verses in 17 parts. She composed this in order to reconstruct the world as the Joyous Life World—the world of harmonious joyousness between God and human beings. The Ofudesaki can be read by anyone in the world. Through the Ofudesaki, people can understand God the Parent’s teachings, settle them in their hearts, and implement them in their daily lives. Tenrikyo Church Headquarters published the Ofudesaki in 1928. In its Foreword, Shozen Nakayama, the second Shinbashira of Tenrikyo, referring to the need of translating the Ofudesaki, writes: Oyasama wrote the Ofudesaki in Japanese in waka verse form. Thus, in order to spread its message to the world without delay, I feel that there is necessity for translation. In fact, I believe that it would not be against God’s will at all for us to take it upon ourselves to translate the Ofudesaki into many languages without being inflexible over its form as a work composed in Japanese (TKH 1980: 6).
