. I recall a true story of a bishop who had a young man come to him with a box of various holy articles, and the young man told him that he was going to be happier without a Church that he thought had re- jected him. After going on his own path for a time, and although he had everything that he thought would make him happy, he was not, and his soul desired something more: peace with the Lord and Dear Parishioners, the Church. He returned to the same bishop he had previously “chewed out,” and to his surprise, the In the Gospel, we hear again strong words from the bishop went into a back room and retrieved the box Lord as regarding discipleship, namely, that it is our that the young man had left. Though he had given fidelity to Him that has to come before all else: “If up on the Lord and the Church, the bishop did not anyone comes to me without hating his father and give up on him, and this sign of hope on part of the mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and bishop helped confirm his return to the faith. even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Who- ever does not carry his own cross and come after As we celebrate Labor Day, let us give thanks for all me cannot be my disciple. […] In the same way, those who are devoted in daily work to help our peo- anyone of you who does not renounce all his pos- ple flourish, but let us also thank God for those who sessions cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26-27, have labored to help us know Christ and the peace 33). First, there is the stark reminder that familial that only He can give. ties, which have their own demands, cannot be equal to or greater than the devotion we show to In the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the Lord. Second, there is the reality that our disci- pleship may even cost us our life, and thus the Lord Father Teater is being honest about the truth that to be a Chris- tian is not easy. And finally, if we are to succeed in completing our journey to heaven, then our posses- sions must also be held lower than our love of the Lord.

For most, it seems to me that the second and last points are accepted, though admittedly sometimes difficult to live up to. The first demand, however, as regards familial ties is not so easily accepted, let alone lived, especially if it is one’s child. From what Joke of the Week most faithful parents tell me, it is always a balanc- ing act to deal with a wayward child who is living a life contrary to how they brought him or her up. On one hand, they want to keep the avenue of commu- nication open with their child, but at the same time, there is a desire to remain clear that how he or she is living their life is not consistent with the Lord, let alone with them. This is definitely a “cross,” and one in which many parents share, and it is one that the Church shares with them, for all of her mem- bers desire to help one another get to heaven. What is important is not to get discouraged, even though it may be years before any inkling of con- version, if any at all, will be witnessed. Our cour- age in remaining true to the Lord as well as our compassion to be an instrument of mercy may help in ways that are yet unseen.
