Ian Frazer Centre The Chair of Paediatric Immunotherapy will work within the newly formed Ian Frazer Centre for Children’s for Children’s Immunotherapy Research. The Chair has been made possible by funding from the Children’s Hospital Foundation and The (UQ). Collaborative Immunotherapy partners in the Ian Frazer Centre for Children’s Immunotherapy Research are Children’s Health Research Queensland and the Queensland Institute of Berghofer (QIMRB).

Faculty of The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Medicine is an internationally recognised provider of world- class education and research. The research-intensive Faculty has a gross budget of over $300 million, employs approximately 1000 continuing and fixed-term staff (headcount), has a community of more than 4000 non-salaried academic appointees and around 3200 students (headcount). The Faculty of Medicine welcomes approximately 500 new medical students each year via both graduate and school-leaver pathways. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs are available in the disciplines of Medicine, Health Sciences, E-Health, Mental Health, Biomedical Sciences and Public Health. The Faculty possesses enormous strengths spanning research, teaching, industry engagement and clinical practice in disciplines ranging from the basic sciences, biomedical research and development, to clinical trials and public health. Research projects within the Faculty have already led to discoveries with far-reaching social and economic impacts, including the revolutionary (TM) for (Professor Ian Frazer). Faculty staff include three highly cited authors, one Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), three Fellows of Academy of Science (FAA) and 12 Fellows of the Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS). The Faculty is a core member of Brisbane Diamantina Health Partners, the Brisbane-wide academic health science system. Educational offerings in biomedical sciences, medicine and public health are informed and supported by research activity across a range of fundamental and clinical areas of importance including recognised strengths in cancer, skin diseases, brain and mental health, infectious disease, maternal and child health, health services research and genomics. Cutting- edge facilities such as the UQ Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR), our laboratories in the Translational Research Institute (TRI) and the Centre for Children’s Health Research (CCHR) enable outstanding research outcomes and sharpen our understanding of cancer, autoimmunity, mental disorders, infectious diseases and neurological disease. Queensland Institute of Medical Research Berghofer QIMR Berghofer is one of Australia’s most successful medical research institutes. The Institute was established 70 years ago by the and has a rich history of scientific discoveries and translational medical research. QIMR Berghofer is focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of cancer, infectious diseases, mental health and chronic disorders. Working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 700 scientists, students and support staff. uq.edu.au 03

Chair in Primary purpose of the position Paediatric This Endowed Chair will be established to honour the development of the cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil from research conducted at The University of Queensland by Professor Ian Immunotherapy Frazer AC FRS. Applications from outstanding clinically or non-clinically qualified researchers are welcomed. The Chair in Paediatric Immunotherapy will be an exceptional researcher and leader who will drive the development of a research program with translational potential in Paediatric Immunotherapy within the Ian Frazer Centre for Children’s Immunotherapy Research. This UQ Centre is a part of the Faculty of Medicine and is a collaborative partnership between Children’s Health Queensland, the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR). The Chair will establish and lead a research group of international standing conducting high quality research in the field of Paediatric Immunotherapy with application to cancer and other diseases. The Chair will engage in collaborative research with members of the Brisbane Research Community and beyond to maximise opportunities for research outcomes.

Organisational relationships The position reports to the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for strategic matters and the Head of the Centre for Children’s Health Research for operational matters.

Roles and responsibilities Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Academic leadership • To lead and build a world-class program of research in the Ian Frazer Centre for Children’s Immunotherapy Research to enhance the research impact of the Institute and University. • Work effectively as part of a leadership team of the Faculty of Medicine at UQ to ensure the research enterprise is highly networked with cognate basic and clinical disciplines. • To work with the leadership team of the Faculty of Medicine at UQ to grow a broad base of research funding which includes competitive grant funding and industry support. • Contribute to an inclusive and collegiate culture within the Faculty of Medicine at UQ based upon research excellence, integrity, and respect. • Work with the Faculty of Medicine at UQ to maximise the impact of the research enterprise.

Specialist capability • To provide leadership of the Ian Frazer Centre for Children’s Immunotherapy.Research • Contribute expertise in Paediatric Immunotherapy to other research groups within Brisbane and beyond uq.edu.au 04

Research scholarship • Maintain a high level of personal academic standing. • Promote the relevance of research findings for improvements in health outcomes. • Communicate research outcomes in traditional academic format (scholarly high impact journals and at high profile national and international meetings) as well as those accessible to clinicians. • Continue to grow an established international profile.

Management • Contribute to the management of the physical, financial, human and intellectual resources of the Centre. • Supervise and facilitate performance of a research group within the Centre. • Champion the training and career development of clinician scientists, graduate students and early career researchers.

External relation • Build strong productive relationships with members of the UQ, QIMR, CHF and CHQ. • Engage with stakeholders relevant to the Centre’s research and develop strategic research partnerships. • Support strong and mutually beneficial relationship with industry and with relevant clinical departments in our partner hospitals.

Selection Essential criteria • High level expertise in Paediatric Immunotherapy or a related area. • PhD in or a related area. • Outstanding track record in research as evidenced by high impact and cited publications, mentoring outcomes and international profile. • Demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues. • Ability to represent and promote the activities of the Ian Frazer Centre for Children’s Immunotherapy Research • Demonstrated excellence as a research leader defined by grant success; HDR completions; and high impact publications. • Experience in management of people, finances and resources within a large and complex research based organization with rapidly evolving research activities • A collegiate management style which promotes collaboration. • Demonstrated high standards of research integrity. • Ability to work as part of a larger enterprise.

Conditions of Employment type employment The initial appointment will be for a term of five years. A further appointment may be offered following a review two years before the end of the initial term.

Classification level and salary level

Salary and benefits An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate including 17% superannuation. Remuneration will be subject to periodic review. Leave entitlements include 4 weeks annual leave, up to 10 days personal leave and up to 5 days carer’s leave. Other terms and conditions of employment will be negotiated with the Provost.
