PKEFACE In October 1945 the War Department (now Department of the Army) requested the Geological Survey to undertake a program of volcano investigations in the Aleutian Islands-Alaska Peninsula area. The field studies were made during the years 1946-1954. The results of the first year's field, laboratory, and library work were hastily assembled as two administrative reports, and most of these data have been revised for publication in Geological Survey Bulletin 1028. ABSTRACT This report describes the subsistence use of birds and eggs in the Bering Strait region of Alaska, based on surveys of households and bird hunting experts in fifteen communities. The geographic area covered includes the coastal regions of Norton Sound, the Seward Peninsula, and St Lawrence, Diomede and Kings islands in notthwest Alaska. The report presents information on species harvested, timing of harvests, and numbers of birds and eggs harvested by community. The report also provides general information on subsistence use patterns for -each community, based on interviews with local bird experts. The report represents the first comprehensive description of subsistence bird patterns for communities in the Bering Strait region. Overall, about 1,203 households (52.2 percent) in the Bering Strait region harvested birds during the survey year. -

The investigations of 1946 were supported almost entirely by the Military Intelligence Division of the Office, Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army. The Geological Survey is indebted to the Office, Chief of Engineers, for its early recognition of the value of geologic studies in the Aleutian region, which made this report possible, and for its continuing support. -

He was hired in 1976 to do a debris removal study of World War II-era military sites in the Aleutian Islands for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The results of Dowell’s study, along with several of the photographs included in this collection, were published in Debris removal and cleanup study, Aleutian Islands and Lower Alaska Peninsula, Alaska (Anchorage, Alaska: U.S. Army Engineer District, Alaska, Corps of Engineers, 1977). Stone Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska, USA Pavel Minyuk Northeast Interdisciplinary Research Institute, Magadan, Russia Early paleomagnetic measurements (late 1960s and early 1970s) from the central Aleutian Island Arc produced both scattered and internally consistent results based solely on alternating field demagnetization. Archived core samples collected from Amchitka and Adak islands for these previous paleomagnetic studies were reanalyzed for this study using modern thermal demagnetization techniques. The new measurements from Amchitka Island indicate significant clockwise rotation (R = 54.7 ± 8.0°) between 14 Ma and the present. Adak Island showed no rotation for volcanic rocks of Quaternary age associated with the present volcanic arc, which is consistent with the lack of rotation seen in other young volcanic rocks (<2 Ma) sampled at localities from Unalaska Island in the east to Kanaga Island in the west. The Eocene Andrew Lake Formation shows a clear magnetic overprint that completely masks any information about possible rotations. Other published studies show rotations similar to those seen for Amchitka Island on Umnak, Amlia, Bering, and Medny islands. Models predicting clockwise rotations involve breaking the forearc into discrete blocks and slivers that rotate and/or travel westward along the curve of the arc in response to the arc-parallel component of the Pacific Plate motion. These models have difficulty explaining the large rotations seen in the easternmost islands sampled, where the relative motion of the Pacific Plate is more or less perpendicular to the arc. -

Continuity and Change in the Eastern Aleutian Archaeological Sequence Richard S. Davis1 and Richard A. Knecht2 Abstract The eastern Aleutian prehistoric archaeological sequence is key for understanding population movements, cultural exchanges, and adapta- tions to environmental changes over a wide area of the north Pacific and Ber- ing Sea during the Holocene. An important question is, Can the settlement history of the eastern Aleutians be understood as a single continuous tradition lasting some 9,000 years, or were there major population and cultural in- fluxes along with periods of widespread population abandonment? We review the available archaeological evidence with reference to recent mtDNA and nucleic DNA studies of prehistoric and contemporary Arctic and Subarctic populations and conclude that the evidence points to an overall cultural conti- nuity with notable incursions and excursions of people and cultural elements into and out of the eastern Aleutians. -
