None of these early efforts achieved a level of success. The original inhabitants of the Aleutians (the Aleuts) developed a successful hunter-gatherer society that did not rely on cultivated species. However, as skilled seamen and traders, the Aleuts supplemented their hunter-gatherer society with products from other regions. After Russia sold Alaska to the united states, limited attempts to grow standard crops on the islands continued without success until the Second World War. Following the Second World War, servicemen and civilian contractors repeatedly attempted to establish various tree and shrub species on the islands they inhabited. -

Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History Repatriation Office Case Report Summaries Alaska Region Revised 2020 Alaska Alutiiq, Koniag, 1991 LARSEN BAY, KODIAK ISLAND Yu'pik In September 1991, the NMNH repatriated the human remains of approximately 1000 individuals from the Uyak (KOD-145) archaeological site to the Alaska Native village of Larsen Bay, and 144 funerary objects were repatriated in January 1992. The museum had received a request to repatriate these remains and artifacts in 1987, and a series of communications between the village and the Smithsonian resulted in the decision to repatriate the remains as culturally affiliated with the present day people of Larsen Bay. The burials had been excavated by a Smithsonian curator, Ales Hrdlicka, during a series of excavations in the 1930s, and dated from around 1000 B.C. to post-contact times. No report is available, but information on the site and the repatriation may be found in the following book: Reckoning With the Dead: the Larsen Bay Repatriation and the Smithsonian Institution. MURIE In the preparation of manuscript for a forthcoming publication on the “Fauna of the Aleutian Islands and Alaska Peninsula,” numerous specimens were critically ex- amined at the IJnited States National Museum and the American Museum of Natural History. It became apparent that at least two forms of birds were sufficiently distinct to merit names as subspecies.Because of probable delay in the publication of the entire report, the descriptions of these two new forms are presented herewith. Des&&n.--The ground color of the type, representingthe summer plumage, varies from ochraceousbuff to buckthorn brown (of Ridgway), with local areas approaching pale olive buff. The dark bars are relqtively broad and fairly evenly distributed throughout. White spots appear on the throat in moderate number. L. ?IZ.gabrielsoni in summer plumage differs from townsendi (from Kiska Island) in having heavier and darker barring; on the average this heavy barring extends farther down the flanks and back. In other words, coarsebarring is not restrictedto the anterior part of the body as in tounrirendi. The ground color is paler, lessochraceous than in townsendi. L. m. gabrielsoti differs from sanjordi of the islandseast of Amchitka in having more uniformly dark ground color and broad bars. -

PREHISTORIC ALEUT INFLUENCES AT PORT MOLLER, ALASKA 1 by Allen P. McCartney Univ. of Wisconsin Introduction Recent mention has been made of the Aleut influences at the large prehistoric site at Port Moller, the only locality known archaeologically on the southwestern half of the Alaska Penin sula. Workman ( 1966a: 145) offers the following summary of the Port Moller cultural affinities: Although available published material from the Aleutians is scarce and the easternmost Aleutians in particular have been sadly neglected, it is my opinion that the strongest affinitiesResale of the Port Moller material lie in this direction. The prevalence of extended burial and burial association with ocher at Port Moller corresponds most closely with the burial practices at the Chaluka site on Umnak Island. Several of the more diagnostic projectile points have Aleutian affinities as do the tanged knives and, possibly,for the side-notched projectile point. Strong points of correspondence, particularly in the burial practices and the stone technology, lead me to believe that a definite Aleut component is represented at the site. Data currently available will not allow any definitive statement as to whether or not there are other components represented at the site as well. -

Late-Quaternary Geomorphic Processes: Effects on the Ancient Aleuts of Umnak Island in the Aleutians ROBERT F. BLACK1 ABSTRACT. Glaciation, volcanic activity, marine processes and wind action affected in various ways the lives of the ancient Aleuts of Umnak Island, who first settled at Anangula about 8,400 BP following deglaciation some 3,000 years earlier. Expanding alpine glaciers reached the sea in places about 3,000 BP without the nearby peoples being much affected. A catastrophic eruption of Okmok Volcano about 8,250 BP is suggested as the cause of the abandonment of the oldest known siteof Anangula, and subsequentmigration westward into thecentral Aleutians. Cutting of strandflats between 8,250 and 3,000 BP led to the development of a very large, accessible, year- round food resource, and an apparent proliferationof settlements. In marked contrast to other parts of Beringia, Umnak Island became the site most favourable for human settlement. Moose Hunters in - Southwest Alaska a Better Opportunity to Evaluate Antlers

Steen, Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game, King Salmon, Alaska '" Abstract: an experimental trophy management program was initiated on the Alaska Peninsula in 1976 with the imple mentation of a regulation requiring that all harvested bull moose (AZaes aZaes gigas) have antlers with at least a 50 inch spread. The regulation was designed to protect bulls under 5 years of age, to test the capability of hunters to comply with minimum size requirements, and to determine the potential for maintaining trophy class bulls in the population through this approach. The first two objectives have been accomplished. Nearly 70 - percent of the harvested bulls have been 5 or more years old and only 4 percent of the bulls taken were illegal. Adequate survey data are not available to determine current proportions of trophy bulls in the herd. In view of the declining nature of the population and increasing frequency - of 5 year olds in the kill, however, it seems likely that current harvests may be curtailing recruitment beyond age 5. Although this may not further affect average trophy size, availability of trophy class animals could eventually be - limited to the size of the 5 year old cohort. The moose population of the central Alaska Peninsula, Game Management - Unit 9E, appears to have established via i11111igration southwest from the Naknek River drainage in the early 1930's (Faro 1969). -
