Thanks to all the former players and coaches who returned for the evening. It was a great night for Harvard Hockey and a special way to kick off the 2014-15 season. HVC Annual Meeting - Guest Speaker Harvard College Dean - Rakesh Khurana Dean of Harvard College, Rakesh Khurana energized the 50+ Harvard Varsity Club members and coaches in attendance at the November 6th HVC Annual Meeting. HVC President Andy Freed ’90 then presented Dean Khurana with a Varsity Club tie—which the Dean admitted he had been admiring throughout the evening—before giving his own perspective on the current and future status of the Varsity Club. We thank all our members for their participation and support! Friends of Harvard Field Hockey Alumnae Day November 8th was an exciting day for Harvard Field Hockey. It was a day to celebrate the contributions of the four members of the senior class and their families and was a day to welcome back the alumnae (and send them home with some field hockey swag). Most importantly, however, it was game day and the Crimson downed Columbia 4-1 to secure a winning record in the Ivy League. For those of us in the stands, it was incredible to see how far the team has come this year. The team has really increased the speed of the game and the overall level of play. We welcome Kaitlyn, Catriona, Noel, and Caitlin into our alumni crew (we expect good things for our Spring Alumnae game) and are excited to continue to watch Tjerk and the team do great things next season. - Siobhan Desmarais ’08 & Tamara Sigler ’08 Friends of Harvard Fencing 125th Anniversary Dinner Celebration The attendance of over 250 friends of Harvard Fencing at our 125th Anniversary Dinner Celebration was a heartening affirmation of the vitality of Harvard Fencing, and a tribute to 125 years of academic and athletic excellence at Harvard. On January 9th, 1889, forty members of the Harvard Fencing Club held their first meeting. On November 21st, 2014, we honored the legacy of the undergraduates who met that evening, celebrated the enthusiasm with which they launched their sport into Harvard Athletic lore, and rekindled the spirit of competition which, 125 years later, still fuels our quest for great achievements. Our anniversary celebration brought together fencers from the class of 1954 to the current team, including the first Women’s Fencing Captain, Harvard’s eight NCAA Individual Champions, members of the 2006 NCAA Championship team, Harvard Olympians and former Olympic Champions, the Head Coaches at Columbia and Wellesley, and representatives of the US Olympic Committee, the US Fencing Association, Harvard University, the Harvard Department of Athletics, and the Harvard Varsity Club. It was a great honor to serve as master of ceremonies for the evening, and to share the stage with our speakers: Peter Brand, the current Head Coach of Harvard Fencing, Branimir Zivkovic, former Head Coach of Harvard Fencing, Bob Scalise, Director of Athletics, and Bill Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions. Our celebration program also included the first screening of One For All: The Enduring Story of Harvard Fencing, a documentary film on Harvard’s fencing history, which was inspired by former Harvard great Philippe Bennett ’76.
