Many thanks also to Pimp the cat, and Skunkie the skunk, who inspired, entertained and enriched my time in America, for bringing joy to my life. 3 Abstract This study examines various aspects of the life of Chinese Muslims during China’s Republican period (1911-1949) – their participation in Republican politics, their narrations of selfhood, and their education and religious reforms. While recognizing the important roles of the state (and its elites) in shaping minority identities, this study seeks to de-center the “state-centric” narratives by probing into the complicated processes of resistance, negotiation, and co-optation between China’s nationalist elites and its non-Han minorities in the making of the modern Chinese nation. Meanwhile, I hope to illustrate both Muslim and non-Muslim efforts of reconstructing modern national and religious subjects in China through dissemination, legitimation and transaction of post-Enlightenment vocabularies from the European world. Following a brief introduction of the method and purpose of this study in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 shows how early 20th century Han Chinese elites, confronted with catastrophic territorial failure, sought to simultaneously integrate the late-Qing “multiethnic” frontiers into the Chinese nation-state and “reinvent” the non-Han peoples through a variety of discursive, historical, and ethnographic devices. In Chapter 3, I seek to present the shifting views on the “translatability” of the Qur’an among the leading Sino-Muslim intellectuals, and the intended sociopolitical impact of Qur’anic translation from the point of view of its early Chinese translators. In Chapter 4, I focus on the discursive strategies on the part of Muslim intellectuals in their endeavor to transform the Muslim population in China from the imperial subjects to modern citizens of the Chinese nation-state. In Chapter 5, I seek to contextualize and analyze the conflicting political discourses over of the Sino-Muslim identity prior to its consolidation and objectification in the PRC. Finally, in Chapter 6, I hope to show how progressive Sino-Muslim intellectuals, by advancing Muslim Education Reforms, sought to simultaneously inherit and jettison their tradition. 4 Chapter 1 Introduction The small Mohammedan how deceitful is he! to buy only four ounces of pork he is weighing for a good half-day now he complains it is little and the he complains again it is little then folding in his arms a pig's head he runs home. - late 19th century Pekinese nursery rhyme (tongyao 童谣)1 Themes Muslim population in China, once “foreign sojourners” (fanke) of Arab and Central Asian descents, has never shed their “strangeness” in the eyes of the Han Chinese over their some 1300 years of living within the Sinitic community. Nevertheless, the Sino-Muslims, who continuously straddled social and cultural borders, experienced various patterns of coexistence with the Han “majority” as the political power, out of their own political concerns, adopted different schemes of seeing its population – divide and rule in Qing, unification in Republican China, regimentation in People’s 1 “小回回儿 怎么那么奸 四两猪肉约半天 左嫌小右嫌少 抱着猪头往家跑”. This study seeks to investigate the changes and continuities within the Sino-Muslim communities in the first half of the 20th century – a crucial period during which the cultural and ethnic boundaries of the Chinese nation was (re)negotiated and reconfigured. I hope to show that Sino-Muslim population, because of their cultural in-betweenness and social marginality, had to “come to terms” with the nationalist projects of the Republican China in ways very different from their Han neighbors. By presenting the Sino-Muslim intellectuals’ various, often conflicting, conceptions and articulations of the notions of modernity, religion, ethnicity and nationhood during China’s transition from an empire to a modern nation-state, I seek to illustrate – mainly from the perspectives of the male, urban elites of China’s Muslim minority – the complex processes through which the subject is raced, nationed, and religioned in the modern era. While historian Eric Hobsbawn famously proclaimed that it was the states and their elites created the nation and not the reverse,2 other scholars, such as Prasenjit Duara, insist approaching national history as “a series of multiple, often conflicting narratives produced simultaneously at national, local, and transnational levels.”3 This study was animated by the latter kind of sensibility. While recognizing the state’s important role in shaping minority identities in the time of nationalism, I seek 2 Hobsbawn 1990, p. 44 3 Duara 1996, back cover. 6 to de-center the “state-centric” narratives by attending to the complicated processes of resistance, negotiation, and co-optation between the nationalist elites and the ethnic/religious minorities in the processes of making modern Chinese nation. In particular, I hope to show that, as also argued in Mao Yufeng’s recent study, by presenting alternative narratives of selfhood and visions for the Chinese nation, Sino-Muslim elites have demonstrated their own agency in China’s nation building project.4 Meanwhile, in light of Dru Gladney, Jonathan Lipman and other scholars’ examination of the “relational” construction of majority and minority identity in China, I also probe into the links between the assertion of a national identity of Hui and the making of Han majority in China’s period of transition from the empire to the nation-state.5 Methodology In a seminal book, Lydia Liu highlighted the revealing capacity of discourse analysis in historical inquiries. By focusing on the transmissions of the notions of modernity through triangulated translations between China, Japan and the West, Liu argues that we may expand the horizon of history as a discipline by “treating language, discourse, and text (including historical writing itself) as genuine historical events, not the least of which is power of discursive acts to produce the terms of 4 Mao 2011. 5 Lipman 1997, p. XXXV 7 legitimation in shaping the historical real.”6 Due to the nature of my primary sources and the type of questions raised in this study, I also pay special attention to language-related issues in the 20th century Chinese history – linguistic collisions, cross-linguistic borrowing, conditions of translation and other discursive practices, to reveal the dimension of discursive struggles in the modern processes of nation building and identity formation. In particular, I hope to illustrate both the Muslim and non-Muslim’s efforts of reconstructing modern national and religious subjects in China through dissemination, legitimation and transaction of new concepts from the post-Enlightenment European world. Meanwhile, I hope to show that while categories and categorization often serve as one of the most useful tools by which the political authorities exert their discursive power, due to the novelty and general “untriedness” of modern vocabularies in the early 20th century China, they also opened up fields of conflicting representations.     The Opposition of a Leading Akhund to Shi’a and Sufi Shaykhs in Mid-Nineteenth- Century China Wang Jianping, Shanghai Normal University Abstract This article traces the activities of Ma Dexin, a preeminent Hui Muslim scholar and grand imam (akhund) who played a leading role in the Muslim uprising in Yunnan (1856–1873). Ma harshly criticized Shi’ism and its followers, the shaykhs, in the Sufi orders in China. The intolerance of orthodox Sunnis toward Shi’ism can be explained in part by the marginalization of Hui Muslims in China and their attempts to unite and defend themselves in a society dominated by Han Chinese. An analysis of the Sunni opposition to Shi’ism that was led by Akhund Ma Dexin and the Shi’a sect’s influence among the Sufis in China help us understand the ways in which global debates in Islam were articulated on Chinese soil. Keywords: Ma Dexin, Shi’a, shaykh, Chinese Islam, Hui Muslims Most of the more than twenty-three million Muslims in China are Sunnis who follow Hanafi jurisprudence when applying Islamic law (shariʿa). Presently, only a very small percentage (less than 1 percent) of Chinese Muslims are Shi’a.1 The historian Raphael Israeli explicitly analyzes the profound impact of Persian Shi’ism on the Sufi orders in China based on the historical development and doctrinal teachings of Chinese Muslims (2002, 147–167). The question of Shi’a influence explored in this article concerns why Ma Dexin, a preeminent Chinese Muslim scholar, a great imam, and one of the key leaders of the Muslim uprising in the nineteenth century, so harshly criticized Shi’ism and its accomplices, the shaykhs, in certain Sufi orders in China, even though Shi’a Islam was nearly invisible at that time.

    Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China proto­typical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Is the problem of this sea naming a matter of qualification of exonym, endonym, allonym or translated name as it was recently found particularly in the relevant recorded publications or is it a completely different question? We will try not to answer this question, but rather to make other questions that we hope will raise interest. BRIEF OF THE GENESIS: We're not going to dwell too much on the genesis of the sea naming’ problem, its origins or the legitimacy associated with the prior art and the use of a particular name in comparison to another one. Works on this subject are very abundant and sufficiently discussed, especially during the UNGEGN meetings since the 90 and during the 17th international seminar on sea and oceans names devoted exclusively, at least during the early years, on this subject. We only recall and point out that because of short-term circumstances related to some particular historical events (Colonization, International Cartography especially the Western one, absence of Korea at the international scene in the first half of last century etc.). The name of 'Sea of Japan’’ was adopted at the international level.

Peter Jordan DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.188 Abstract Apart from all institutional definitions of the endonym and the exonym as, e.g., the latest definitions given by the UNGEGN Glossary of Toponymic Terms in 2007, the endonym/exonym divide is basically and most generally speaking a divide between names applied by a social group for geographical features conceived to be part of the area where this group lives and to which it feels to be emotionally attached and names applied by other social groups for this same area. Much depends therefore on to which extent social groups feel to be emotionally attached to larger geographical features such as mountain ranges, streams and seas, regard them as a part of their living sphere and not as attached to nobody or another group. In other words, it is the question, whether or inhowfar a social group refers to a feature as part of its “place” in the meaning of Yi-Fu Tuan (1977). Where is it, e.g., that a line is drawn between “one’s own” and “the other” on seas? Is the high sea - far beyond the horizon from the coast - still conceived to be part of the “place” of a coastal dweller community? Is it even a coastal water at the opposite side of the sea? Is a mountain range like the Alps or the Rocky Mountains more than a spatial construct? Do people inhabiting the one end of the range feel emotionally attached to all parts of it, even to very remote places at the other end - just because it is conceived to be the same feature and has a common name in geographical literature? And how is it with countries? Obviously, citizens feel to be attached to the whole country as a concept.

    Liu Zhi: A Leading Chinese Muslim Scholar and Saint Alexander Wain What is recorded in the books of Islam (tianfang) is no different from what is in the Confucian canon. Observing and practicing the proprieties of Islam is like observing and practicing the teachings of the ancient sages and kings. Liu Zhi, Tianfang dianli Liu Zhi (ca.1670-1739), also known as Liu Jia Lian, was born in the former Chinese imperial capital of Nanjing.1 Little is known about his background and personal life – only that his relatives considered him too studious and, therefore, quite dull! He was, however, a member of China’s Hui community. With roots stretching back to the seventh century, the Hui were (and continue to be) a sizable community of Sinicised Muslims. 2 Originally descended from a transient population of Persian and Arab merchants, by the seventeenth century the Hui were fully acculturated Chinese Muslims: they spoke Chinese, wore Chinese clothing and observed Chinese customs. Because of (in some cases centuries of) intermarriage, they also appeared physically identical to the Han (China’s dominant ethnic group). 3 Despite this level of acculturation, however, the Hui maintained their Islamic heritage: a Ḥanafī-based form of Islam coloured by traditional Chinese culture. The followers of Islam have a significant impact on ethno-religious, political, economic and cultural relations of the Chinese society. Ethno-cultural heterogeneity of Chinese Islam has defined its confessional identity. The peculiarity of Chinese Islam is determined, firstly, with its religious heterogeneity. In China there all three main branches of Islam: Sunnism, Shiism, and Sufism. Secondly, the unique nature of Chinese Islam is defined by close relationship with the traditional religions of China (Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism) and Chinese population folk beliefs. Chinese Islam has incorporated many specific feat ures of the traditional religious culture of China, which heavily influenced on the religious consciousness and religious activities of Chinese Muslims.     TRAMES, 2012, 16(66/61), 3, 237–285 OFFICIAL COLOURS OF CHINESE REGIMES: A PANCHRONIC PHILOLOGICAL STUDY WITH HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS OF CHINA Jingyi Gao Institute of the Estonian Language, University of Tartu, and Tallinn University Abstract. The paper reports a panchronic philological study on the official colours of Chinese regimes. The historical accounts of the Chinese regimes are introduced. The official colours are summarised with philological references of archaic texts. Remarkably, it has been suggested that the official colours of the most ancient regimes should be the three primitive colours: (1) white-yellow, (2) black-grue yellow, and (3) red-yellow, instead of the simple colours. There were inconsistent historical records on the official colours of the most ancient regimes because the composite colour categories had been split. It has solved the historical problem with the linguistic theory of composite colour categories. Besides, it is concluded how the official colours were determined: At first, the official colour might be naturally determined according to the substance of the ruling population. There might be three groups of people in the Far East. (1) The developed hunter gatherers with livestock preferred the white-yellow colour of milk. (2) The farmers preferred the red-yellow colour of sun and fire. (3) The herders preferred the black-grue-yellow colour of water bodies. Later, after the Han-Chinese consolidation, the official colour could be politically determined according to the main property of the five elements in Sino-metaphysics. The red colour has been predominate in China for many reasons.     ARTICLES Islam In CHIna: THe Hān Kitāb TRADITION IN THe WrITIngs of Wang DaIyu, ma ZHu anD lIu ZHI, WITH a noTe on THeIr relevanCe for ConTemporary Islam Alexander Wain* Abstract: This paper examines the unique Chinese brand of Islam known as the Hān Kitāb. Beginning with a brief historical overview of the Sinicised Muslim community which created this tradition, the paper proceeds to examine the work of three key Hān Kitāb figures: Wang Daiyu, Ma Zhu and Liu Zhi. All active between the mid-seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the paper argues that their utilisation of the Islamic concept of dīn al-fiÏra (or humanity’s innate inclination towards a belief in God), coupled with a willingness to engage positively with Neo-Confucian thought, resulted in a uniquely multicultural form of Islam; the Hān Kitāb, we will conclude, represents an early example of Islamic ‘ecumenical thought’. By actively seeking to appreciate and acknowledge the commonalities between Islam and Chinese tradition, the Hān Kitāb overcame exclusivism and stressed moderation. In the context of the challenges posed by contemporary Salafī-inspired Islamic extremism, this paper will argue that the Hān Kitāb has never been more relevant than it is today. 1. Introduction This paper examines the Hui (Sinicised Muslim)1 tradition known as the Hān Kitāb (from the Chinese han qitabu, lit. a Chinese Islamic book). Although a conceptually sophisticated and rich tradition, very little is known about the Hān Kitāb – or, for that matter, the Muslim community which created it – outside a handful of (almost entirely western) scholars. Given this level of unfamiliarity, our paper will begin with a brief historical survey, outlining the history of the Hui up until the mid-seventeenth century, when the firstHān Kitāb texts began to emerge.
