Bolingbroke, Idea of a Patriot King (1749) The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) corvettes that supported the Allied landings in North Africa beginning in November 1942 achieved substantial success. This little-known story is important, for the Canadian warships gave outstanding service at a time when the fortunes of the main RCN escort forces in the north Atlantic had dropped to their nadir. Problems resulting from overexpansion and overcommitment had, as has been fully documented in recent literature, raised grave doubts about the efficiency of Canadian escorts.2 What has yet to be properly acknowledged was that the operations of RCN ships in the Mediterranean and adjacent eastern Atlantic areas during these same months of crisis demonstrated that given an opportunity Canadian escorts could match the best. On 25 July 1942, after months of high-level discussions concerning the strategic direction of the war, Allied leaders agreed to invade North Africa in a campaign named Operation Torch, rather than immediately opening a second front in Europe. On 27 August 1942 the First Sea Lord signalled Vice-Admiral P.W. Nelles, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), "that Admiral Cunningham's [Naval Commander Expeditionary Force] Chief of Staff, Commodore R.M. Dick, would be visiting him in Ottawa with some information."3 The material proved to be an outline of Operation Torch, along with a request that the RCN provide escorts for the operation. -

HMS Fitzroy (J03 - Hunt Class Minesweeper) was sunk on 27 May 1942 by a mine 40 miles north-east of Great Yarmouth in position 52.39N, 2.46E. It was most likely sunk by a British mine! It had been commissioned on 01 July 1919. -

The Ships of Canada’s Navy 1910 --- 2010 Researched and Written by Capt. (N) (Ret’d) Michael Braham Illustrations from Ready Aye Ready Web Site Foreword This project started out as an effort to provide Canadian War Museum Volunteer Interpreters with some basic reference material on the guns used by the Royal Canadian Navy and the Maritime Forces of the Canadian Forces since 1910. It became clear after that initial product was circulated for comment that some contextual information was required pertaining to the ships and classes of ships that carried these weapons. As a result, it has grown into a two-volume “briefing note” with pride of place being given to the ships in this Research Paper. It will probably be eminently clear that I am not an historian, nor for that matter, one given to deep research. My ‘fish-head’ readers may also question the qualifications of a former ‘pusser’ to take on this task. However, this is intended only as a guide and hopefully one that will stimulate some more informed opinion that will allow it to be amended from time to time to improve its veracity. I have tried to list the ships (when they were one of a kind) or classes in rough chronological order. I have also been a bit selective and deliberately omitted some of the lesser combatant ships which may stir some controversy that I will be pleased to right by adding any others that readers think should be included. Among the omissions are submarines which are left out since Canadian submarines did not participate in the major wars of the period covered and are not mentioned in the War Museum displays. -

The Battle of the Atlantic The RCN lost 1,965 men and 24 ships during the War, most of them in the Atlantic. The following is a list of HMC ships that were lost. We salute those ships and all who sailed in them... We will remember them... HMCS Alberni - Corvette At 11.40 hours on 21 August 1944, U-480 fired a Gnat at an unknown convoy and thought that she had sunk a frigate. In fact, the corvette HMCS Alberni (A/Lt.Cdr. Ian Hunter Bell, RCNVR) was hit and sunk in in the English Channel about 25 nautical miles south-east of St Catherine's Point, Isle of Wight in position 50º18'N, 00º51'W. The survivors (three officers and 28 men) were rescued by the British motor torpedo boats HMS MTB-469 and HMS MTB-470 and taken to Portsmouth where the two injured men were treated. 59 of her crew went down with the ship. HMCS Athabaskan - Destroyer HMCS Athabaskan (Lt.Cdr. John Hamilton Stubbs, DSO, DSC, RCN) was sunk in the English Channel north-east of Ouessant by two torpedoes from the German torpedo boats T-24 and T-27. The magazine and a boiler blew up in an explosion that was seen 20 miles away. 129 of the crew went down with the ship. 83 men were picked up from the water by the torpedo boats and taken prisoner. Another 44 of the crew were picked up by HMCS Haida. The wreck lies in position 48°42.940N, 004°31.485W. HMCS Bras D’or - Minesweeper HMCS Bras d'Or (T/A/Lt.
