The Bay Area Bluegrass Association 301 Slossen Street, Houston, TX 77598 February 2006 “Twenty Years Strong” Volume 20, Issue 2

he Bay Area Bluegrass Association, (BABA) was organized in 1986 and incorporated in 1987 under the Texas Non-Profit Corporation Act. The primary purpose of BABA is to preserve, encourage, and promote Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel music as an American art form. BABA promotes Bluegrass through being active in community events, fund raisers, festivals, and monthly shows. The monthly show is free to the public and features Bluegrass from the local and national scene. The stage show begins at 6:30 p.m., but pickers are welcome to bring their instruments and come earlier. BABA’s kitchen provides tasty, inexpensive food and beverages (NO ALCOHOL). Prizes and donations are raffled off every show. Proceeds from the kitchen, raffles/donations, and memberships from individuals and businesses are used to present the monthly shows; publish the newsletter; pay for sound equipment; promote Bluegrass and for minor incidental expenses. Please help support Bluegrass. Join BABA today. Your membership will help us to meet our goals and objectives. See membership levels below. BABA is a 501(a) tax deductible organization. See any Director for information.

From the President

There are some new ideas and some changes going on at BABA. One concerns this newsletter and how it is delivered to you. As some of you know the BABA Bulletin has been available on the website as well as being mailed to our members. Now only a sample newsletter will be available to the public on the web site.

The cost of printing and postage keeps going up and we need to save money so we are asking for your help. If you are comfortable with your computer and like doing things online, let us e-mail you a link each month which will allow you to access the Bulletin online in a PDF format. You can read it online or download it and print it out at home. If you are not a computer whiz and prefer getting your newsletter by mail, that’s OK. We’ll con- tinue to mail them to you just as we have always done.

Each of you who chooses to receive your Bulletin on line will help BABA reduce costs and save labor. Printing and applying mail- ing labels and sorting per bulk mail requirements is time consuming. If you’d like to help us out by getting your Bulletin online, you need to be sure that we have your current e-mail address.

We’ll have a form for you to fill out at the show. There is one in this newsletter if you want to cut it out and mail it in or you can e- mail your request to [email protected]. Just tell us you want your Bulletins in the mail or on line or both. Be sure to in- clude your current mailing address as well as the e-mail you want us to use to send your notification link.

Watch this space for more new things. There are some good ideas being floated around which will make BABA membership very rewarding, and in some very tangible ways! Right now folks who join BABA between now and the April show will be entered into a drawing and could win a free three day pass to the Fire on the Strings bluegrass festival in May.

I hope to see you all at the February show!

Ed

The BABA Bulletin February 2006 11 Press Release: Hickory Hill & Byron Berline Band at Music City Texas

This year the bi-annual Music City Texas Bluegrass Festival is bigger and better than ever. With the return of everyone’s favorite pickers, Hickory Hill comes the three time world champion Byron Berline and his band; John Hickman, Brad Berge, Richard Sharp and Steve Short.

Berline’s early career included playing fiddle with bluegrass legends like , and after moving to L.A. he soon found him- self playing and recording with big time performers like , , , The Eagles, , and many more. Berline has recorded seven solo albums including the Grammy award winning Fiddle & A Song with guest perform- ances from , and others. He has extensive television and movie soundtrack credits from Star Trek, Blaze, Back to the Future III, and Basic Instinct.

Berline’s band consists of a group of fine musicians with years of experience from pickin’ on porches to sharing stages with major musical acts. Headlining this bluegrass extravaganza will be Hickory Hill, a band which boasts MCT’s own John Early, a master musician with a bluegrass band that celebrates the purest form of American music at its finest.

Hickory Hill made their mark on the national scene two decades ago when they blew competition away in the Best New Band contest at The Bluegrass Festival of the United States in Louisville, Ky. Keeping the music alive for over twenty five years now, Hickory Hill has evolved from a novice band of friends to a reputable bluegrass force with eight albums under their belt. Their lively perform- ances can be attributed to their original lyrics and dynamic blend of acoustic instruments, creating an atmosphere fit for boot stomp- ing family fun.

Join the Music City Texas Bluegrass Festival Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call 903-756-9934 to purchase tickets and visit www.musiccitytexas.org.

Harmonica Makes Debut at Hill Country Acoustic Music Camp June 14 - 18, 2006

The Hill Country Acoustic Music Camp (www.hcamp.org) is one of those rare opportunities to get away and spend time learning more about your favorite acoustic instrument with an experienced professional while on a budget. For five days in June, the students at the Camp will have the opportunity to focus on learning about their instruments in their classes and to mix and jam with the teachers and each other in the various structured and unstructured jams in the afternoons and evenings - all for $325 tuition.

This year the Camp (www.hcamp.org) will include a class on the harmonica and has asked Cara Cooke (www.cyberharp.isonfire.com) to be its instructor. Cara is known for her ability to play bluegrass fiddle tunes, but also plays a variety of other styles, as well.

The Hill Country Acoustic Music Camp (www.hcamp.org) will include classes in banjo (Alan Munde, Gerald Jones), (Gerald Jones, Paul Oorts, Joe Carr), fiddle (Bart Trotter), guitar (Gerald Jones, Joe Carr, Paul Oorts, David Hamburger), bass (Bill Honker), mountain dulcimer (Lee Rowe), harmonica (Cara Cooke), singing (Kathy Chiavola), and hammered dulcimer (Karen Ashbrook). It will take place on the Schreiner University campus in Kerrville, Tx., from June 14 to June 18, 2006. Room and board for the Camp can be found on the campus for $200 to $240, or students can stay in their RV at a local RV park and provide their own meals. All in all, the Hill Country Acoustic Music Camp is a very economical, as well as educational, vacation for both the bud- ding and experienced musician. For more information, visit the Hill Country Acoustic Music Camp website at www.hcamp.org.
