I suppose you, like myself, have noticed how our language has gone down- hill. I recently watched a TV news interview. To each question asked, the inter- viewee began their response with the word so. So, what happened next was….so, then I did….so, he told me. Why does every sentence begin with the word so? Another three words I find annoying are like and you know. Would it be possible for our younger generation to utter a sentence without inserting those three words? So, like I said to the guy, you know….it was almost, you know, like…..I was trying to, you know, like answer. How did these terms get to be a standard part of every sentence? Apparently most people feel that it is inappropriate for a brief silence to exist between statements. Some sound must constantly be coming from their mouth, mostly in the form of aaaaa or ummm. Have you ever tried to count the number of times a person will say aaaa between or in sentences while talking? While listening to a radio commentary, I counted six to eight aaas or ums in a single sentence! I even noticed this occurring in the speech of a young TV reporter who was giving an on-site report of a recent event. Alternatively, if the sound aaaaa is not used, you might hear ummmm. And this was supposed to be a professional speaking! I often wondered what it would be like for some foreign person to try to translate a conversation. Would they be looking for every other word in the dictionary to begin with the sound aaaa? I know I will personally never be able to change current trends in language, but umm I really wish I could. mre Sprinkles of Living Water The TR Times A final word TRAVELERS REST RESORT, INC. by Chaplain Winston Pike Box 2817, 29129 Johnston Rd.
