THE NEW SLC AIRPORT CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF SEPTEMBER 15, 2020 UTAH’S INSPIRATIONAL ROLE IN THE NEW SLC'S STUNNING DESIGN PASSENGER AMENITIES APLENTY FABULOUS NEW SHOPPING & DINING OPTIONS WELCOME TO THE NEW SLC No doubt, flying is a magical experience. As the plane takes off and the land below becomes smaller and smaller, the world seems to melt away as you embark on a journey that will become part of your story. Airports become part of our travel stories, too, and some are more memorable than others. Maybe you remember Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) for the Christmas Eve dinner you ate there after missing a connecting flight due to a massive winter storm. Or the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), where someone helped you connect when you couldn’t find your gate because, at that airport, gates are not assigned until 20 minutes prior to departure. Or maybe you go out of your way to connect through the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) so you can visit the little shop with the so-unique gifts you found by accident there. When The New SLC International Airport (SLC) opens September 15, we’re confident it will rise to the top of exceptional travel experiences for all those who pass through it, even if they never step foot outside of the building. What will travelers remember about The New SLC? From awe-inspiring art installations like The Canyon and The Falls, and the Delta Sky Club’s outdoor deck, with its beautiful mountain views to the electric plug- ins at each seat in the gate waiting areas to the eclectic roster of high-end shops and restaurants with street pricing, there’s plenty to be impressed by within The New SLC.

New Mexico Arts’ Arts in Social Service funding category provides an avenue from which art making can occur in unlikely places. Established in 2000, Arts in Social Service funding supports arts organizations or social service organizations for arts-based projects that focus on addressing social issues and reaching specific populations such as the homeless, abused, or the ill. The following are several projects funded through New Mexico Arts that have impacted various segments of communities statewide. Art for the Heart is an ongoing healing project located in Peñasco. Its Hersday project offers a safe environment for abused women to build self-esteem through the act of art making. Collaborating with Taos Community Against Violence, advocates from Art for the Heart attend every other week to support women participating in the Hersday project. Women in the program grow and heal together through the making of quilts, dolls, ceramics, murals and other artistic endeavors, often sharing stories and solidarity while working on their projects.

  • Gordon Huether Studio Art Matters Introduction
gordon huether studio art matters introduction When I was about 17 years old, after making my second stained glass window at my father’s kitchen table, I made a life decision: I promised myself that one day I would edify the spirit of humanity by bringing beauty and meaning into the world through art. I am happy to report that almost 40 years later, I am honoring that promise by creating art every day for every conceivable kind of building, home and landscape. From the beginning of my career, I’ve been fascinated by the interplay between light and glass as I explored the artistic possibilities of refraction and reflection in glass fabrications. As I developed as an artist, I began exploring other media, moving between highly refined, polished materials like polished aluminum and dichroic glass to gritty, repurposed and salvaged materials like rusted steel and weathered wood. I’ve learned to let the story I am telling lead me towards the right material. Salvaged and repurposed materials allow me to explore the effect of time and nature on man-made materials or, as in the case for the Napa 9/11 Memorial, convey the devastating aftermath of inhumanity. Using a variety of glass techniques and applications for university campuses and houses of worship captures the experience of inspiration and illumination often found there. My work investigates intellectual precepts and explores emotional complexities. It is about shaping a story and expressing an idea, not just creating an object of beauty. When developing a concept for a new public artwork, I endeavor to connect to the site by researching its history and culture; connect to the viewer by listening to the community and understanding their vision for the project; and finally, connect to the landscape and architecture surrounding the work by choosing materials that respond and engage with the location.

  • Gordon Huether Studio Art Matters
gordon huether studio art matters THEATER CORRIDOR PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION RESPONSE TO REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS gordon huether studio art matters LETTER OF INTEREST My interest in creating an art installation for the theater corridor in downtown Ashland stems from my appreciation for the artistic challenge of fulfilling the potential of this very specific space, the opportunity to fully integrate lighting into an artwork and explore the ways in which lighting can have a profound effect, and the charms and attraction of the City of Ashland, itself. Ashland’s beauty and the grandeur of the Siskiyou and Cascade Mountains, its incredible cultural resources and the charm of the community make it an ideal site for the meaningful and thoughtful integration of public art. I believe I have the experience and unique qualifications to fulfill all project goals and create artwork that acknowledges the artistic and intellectual qualities of the city, facilities passage through the corridor, activates the space and pays homage to the bountiful beauty of the area. Creating work that brings storytelling and beauty into publicly shared spaces has been my focus and passion for nearly 30 years and has resulted in more than 70 international public art commissions. My mission statement defines the conceptual basis for my body of work: “To inspire the spirit of humanity by bringing beauty and meaning into the world through art.” I approach each project through a fresh lens and let the story and the parameters of each project guide my creativity. I believe a successful public art installation should articulate a public space and give it definition and meaning, either by extending it visually or providing a sense of enclosure and intimacy.

  • City of Albany, CA
CITY OF ALBANY ARTS COMMITTEE STAFF REPORT Meeting date: October 28, 2013 Prepared by: JB SUBJECT: UC Village Mixed Use Development - The 6.3-acre project site in University Village is located to the northwest and southwest of the Monroe Street/San Pablo Avenue intersection. The proposed project includes a 27,000 square foot grocery store, 17,000 square feet of associated retail space, and a 175-unit senior housing project. The purpose of the agenda is to provide the applicants an opportunity to present approach to public art. STAFF RECOMMENDATION The applicants request the Committee make a recommendation to the Planning and Zoning Commission in support of the public art components of the project. BACKGROUND In 2010, the City Council approved the Public Arts Master Plan. The Plan included an evaluation of the southern gateway to the City at San Pablo Avenue next to the proposed UC Village Mixed Use Project. Attached is an excerpt from the Master Plan. The plan notes that the Codornices Creek that defines the Albany and Berkeley border is largely invisible to passersby. The plan recommends the Committee pay particular attention to the public art opportunities. In close concert with the development plans under review by the Planning & Zoning Commission DISCUSSION The UC Village Mixed Use Project consists of two primary elements: a grocery store anchored retail project and a senior housing project. Separate development teams are developing each component. UC Berkeley is leasing the property to the developers, but otherwise is not significantly involved in the urban design and application review process. For the retail project, Gordon Huether has been selected to create the public art.

  • April 2017 Introduction
April 2017 Introduction The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) established the Design Team Roster as an on-line resource that can be used by anyone seeking an artist for a project – community groups, business or property owners, schools, architecture firms, private developers or other public art programs. The Roster provides a pool of highly qualified artists, and increases the efficiency of the selection process. The intent of the roster is to provide users a range of artistic styles from which to select an artist that fits the needs of a particular project -- creating an art plan for a site; collaborating on early design along with having a budget to create artwork(s); identifying opportunities for other artists to provide design elements within the construction budget and/or complemented with public art funds; or, for creating a distinctive artwork for a site. These artist have demonstrated skills, experience and interest in commissioned projects. As you review this roster, please read the artists’ statement and view details of up to three past projects to get a feel for their work. You are strongly encouraged to visit the artists’ websites and social media outlets to further explore their practice.
