The second phase of Measure I improvements has been awarded to R.J. Noble Company, Inc. in the amount of $2,938,408. The work is scheduled to begin in June. The project includes residential streets bounded by Alondra Boulevard, Stage Road, Biola Avenue, Rosecrans Avenue, La Mirada Boule- vard, Ocaso Avenue, Barnwall Street and Dalmatian Avenue. La Mirada voters approved Measure I in November 2012. The funds are being used for infrastructure improvements including street pavement, side- walk, curb and gutter rehabilitation, installation of new or updated handicap curb access ramps, and removal and replacement of all slotted cross gutters in La Mirada neighborhoods. Work also includes relining or replacement of cor- rugated metal storm drain pipe. The first phase of neighborhood improve- ments north of Imperial Highway was completed earlier in May.

Statewide Mandatory Water Conservation

The State of has enacted water regulations in response to the drought. Until recently, guidelines for water conservation have been volun- tary. Now, all communities are expected to comply with a statewide goal of 25 percent water reduction. La Mirada is served by water suppliers Suburban Water Systems and Golden State Water Co. These water agencies have been ordered by the Cal- ifornia Public Utilities Commission to notify customers of the State’s adop- tion of emergency regulations for water conservation. The State has prohibited the following activities: • Watering outdoor landscapes in a way that causes water to run-off onto adjacent properties, non-irrigated areas, private and public walkways, roadways, parking lots, or structures. • Washing a vehicle with a hose without a shut-off nozzle or other device that will immediately stop the flow of water when not in use. • Using drinking water to wash driveways and sidewalks. Pieology Pizzeria and Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt are moving forward with new locations at the Crossroads shopping center. Both fast-casual eateries have obtained building permits and construction is underway. Each aims to open for business in June at the renovated shopping center located at the intersection of La Mirada Boulevard and Imperial Highway. “We are looking forward to Pieology and Menchie’s opening in the very near future,” says Community Development Director Alison Moore. “Both are welcome additions to La Mirada and bring the Crossroads shopping cen- ter even closer to completion.” The renovation of the Crossroads shopping center began in 2012. Since then, it has undergone a complete transformation with the replacement of obsolete buildings with new structures, new store openings, and landscap- ing, lighting, and common area enhancements. The center is anchored by a Walmart Neighborhood Market and Walgreens Pharmacy. Jersey Mike’s, Waba Grill, and Supercuts opened last year. The redevelopment was pri- vately funded, and the design is the first to incorporate the requirements of the City’s Imperial Highway Specific Plan. For more information on economic development in La Mirada, call (562) 943-0131.

Pavement Maintenance Set for Major Streets

Asphalt concrete pavement is used on City roadways and parking lots, and regular pavement maintenance is required to get the full useful life of the product. The slurry seal coating provides a protective layer and wearing course for the original pavement structure. The next slurry sealing pavement project in- cludes La Mirada Boulevard from Alondra Boulevard to Leff- ingwell Road, Rosecrans Avenue from Valley View Avenue to Beach Boulevard, and Santa Gertrudes Avenue from Lawnhill Drive to Lemon Drive. The project has been awarded to Roy Al- lan Slurry, Inc. and will begin in June.

Address Curb Numbering to Begin Soon

Every five years, the City of La Mirada provides the painting of address curb numbers in residential neighborhoods. The City will be releasing a Request for Proposals in May and anticipates hiring a qualified contractor in June. Curb numbering is scheduled to be completed in all residen- tial areas by July 31. Residents should not pay for or provide donations for curb numbering if approached. For more information, contact the Public Works Department at (562) 902-2372.

Public Safety Team Warns Against Drunk Driving

Deputy Blanca Creta is a 14 year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. She has patrolled La Mirada since 2012 as part of the City’s Public Safety Team, and among her as- signments is to enforce drunk driving laws. Through her exceptional work, Deputy Creta has received a num- ber of key awards and recognitions. In 2013, she was recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for making 72 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests, and was among the 57th Assembly District’s 2014 “Distinguished Women of the Year” Award honorees. By educating motorists on the dangers of drinking Deputy Creta aims to reduce these types of incidents. “I have attended MADD seminars where I’ve heard from victims who have suffered tremendously as a result of drunk drivers,” says Creta. “The victims share their experiences of suffering from life changing injuries or the loss of a loved one.” Creta offers that common misconceptions lead individuals to jus- Safety Trainings for Kids tify getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. “Impaired In cooperation with the American Red Cross, Safe Kids safe- drivers think they are able to drive, are close to home and can avoid ty training for youth will be held on Saturday, August 22, from law enforcement. Volunteer Coaches Needed

Volunteer coaches are the backbone of youth sports in the City of La Mirada. Without the com- mitted hard work of our volunteer coaches, local youth would not have the quality, one-of-a-kind sports programs you see in La Mirada.

Continue to help make a difference in your community by signing up to be a volun- teer youth league coach. Becoming a volunteer coach is easy. Simply stop by any City of La Mirada facility and fill out a Volunteers In Action application. Just specify what sport you’d like to coach!

Coaching opportunities available for the following sports: • Basketball • Volleyball / Volley-tennis • Futsal Indoor Soccer • Flag Football For more information please visit www.cityoflamirada.org or call the Community Services Department at (562) 943-7277.
