It’s clear Carl had a huge impact on our neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles. We are parallel leaders in our communities. The difference is our uniform. At age 11, he was a Crip. I was a Scout. Yes, it could have been me, murdered on the street. It’s kill or be killed in South Central. When I was 4, my mother saw the importance of Scouting for me and my other brother, John. Just two years apart, we did everything together: outings, summer camps, Jamborees. We even received our Eagle Scout awards on the same day. Scouting could have been out of reach for us financially.Scoutreach brought Scouting to us. Scholarships made it possible for me to attend high adventure bases, Jamborees and even the World Jamboree. Scouting took my world from the hood all the way to Japan. My experience at the 2007 World Jamboree inspired me to study abroad and seek a degree in International Business from San Diego State University.     E PLU RI M BU NU S U WHO WE ARE The Boy Scouts of America provides the nation’s foremost youth program of character development, outdoor adventure, and values-based leadership training to its more than 2.2 million youth participants. With nearly 1 million adult volunteers in approximately 265 local councils throughout the United States and its territories, Scouting teaches real-life skills and qualities that help young people become “Prepared. For Life.®” WHO WE SERVE • 1,231,831 boys and girls ages 5 to 10 in Cub Scouting • 789,784 boys ages 11 to 17 in Boy Scouting (to be named Scouts BSA starting February 2019) • 51,815 young men and women ages 14 to 20 in Venturing and Sea Scouting • 109,613 young men and women ages 10 to 20 in Exploring career-based programs • 80,756 units, representing partnerships and collaborations with businesses, community and religious organizations, and agencies that support BSA programs • In addition to our traditional programs, we serve 313,020 boys and girls in elementary through high school in Learning for Life character education programs. WHAT WE DO For 108 years, Scouting has stood for adventure, excitement, and leadership. The following provides an overview of the impact of Scouting during the past year. Build Leaders From the time they enter the program as Cub Scouts until they become adults, boys learn what it takes to be a leader. In 2018, girls, too, were able to benefit from these early lessons, thanks to the BSA’s historic decision to begin welcoming girls into Cub Scouting.

    Ruritan Scout Leader Service Award OVERVIEW The Significance of the Ruritan Service Award In recognition of Ruritan’s contributions to America’s future in association with the Boy Scouts of America and other scouting organizations, the Board of Directors of Ruritan National established the Ruritan Scout Leader Service Award. It recognizes Ruritan members in good standing who have made a significant contribution to the youth of their communities by volunteering in the programs of scouting organizations. The Ruritan Scout Leader Service Award was introduced in 2005. The award, a recognition approved by Ruritan National, gives local Ruritan Clubs an opportunity to nominate Ruritan members to be recognized for their service to youth, and also makes the public aware of the important role Ruritans play in the community. The Application and Selection for the Ruritan Scout Leader Service Award. Ruritan Scout Leader Service Awards will, to the maximum extent possible, be presented annually at the Ruritan National convention. The Ruritan National selection committee makes the final determination on all recipients. The award will consist of public recognition of the recipient’s accomplishments, an appropriate Ruritan recognition certificate, and authorization for the recipient to wear the BSA square knot patch (or other scout organization’s recognition piece) on the recipient’s Scout uniform. This insightful grouping of materials highlights the tenures of former Chief Scout Executives James E. West, Joseph Brunton, Alden Barber, Harvey Price, J.L. Tarr, and Ben Love. Speeches and associated writings from Deputy Chief Scout Executive George Fisher are included, in addition to writings by national Presidents Irving Feist, Norton Clapp, Robert Reneker, Arch Monson Jr., and Downing B. Jenks. These speeches and writings offer an exclusive look into the minds of prominent professionals and volunteers throughout history. Suggested outlines by speech writers, handwritten notes within the margins, and edited rough drafts provide a personal connection to these past leaders who created and accomplished so much for the Boy Scouts of America. The content of the documents includes recorded minutes of National Council meetings, speeches given at local council meetings, dedication ceremonies, and tributes. There are also speeches Gerald Ford discussing the need for cooperation with the YMCA and similar organizations in order to better train and benefit the youth of America. They address Scouting as applied to boys’ lives, and educated members and the public on the implementation of new programs, such as the Rural Program and Boypower ’76. Of other notable interest, the collection features correspondence and speeches from past presidents of the United States.

Karp What is the likelihood of a summer day camp program in the San Fernando Valley with participants in the same place at the same time from such diverse groups as Spanish­speaking Hispanic youth and religiously observant Jewish youth? Such a cross­cultural youth experience actually occurred in the Eastern San Fernando Valley in July 2006. This marvel was a part of the local programming of the Western Los Angeles County Council of the Boy Scouts of America. This Scout Council produces six week long Cub Scout Day Camps throughout Northern and Western Los Angeles County. Each provides the opportunity for the youth of diverse religious, ethnic and cultural groups to come together. In July in the East Valley, boys attended Cub Scout Day Camp from both the religious Jewish community of Valley Village and from the Spanish speaking Hispanic community of Pacoima and surrounding areas. These boys might never have crossed paths but for the Scouting program that put them together. Their backgrounds and cultures are worlds apart, yet they have Scouting in com­ mon: The religious Jewish boys are affiliated with the traditional Cub Scouting program, adjusted to accommodate the religious practices of Orthodox Judaism. The Hispanic youth are members of a new national Soccer & Scouting program recently launched locally by the Scout Council.

    Friends Of Scouting Campaign Unit Play Book Greater Los Angeles Area Council, BSA Providing an outstanding Scouting experience, to a growing membership, sustainably. DEAR UNIT LEADER Thank you for the important leadership you provide to the youth of Greater Los Angeles Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. Your efforts have a positive impact on the youth of our community and your support is greatly appreciated. What is Friends of Scouting (FOS)? Friends of Scouting is the Greater Los Angeles Area Council’s annual fundraising campaign that helps support quality programs for youth throughout the Greater Los Angeles area. We rely upon philanthropic support, earned revenue, and our Friends of Scouting Campaign to support and operate our camps, provide year-round activities and programs, professional and volunteer training, registration, record keeping, and program materials. On average it costs $250 to provide these crucial local support services for just one Scout for one year of program. How can you help?
