The Warburtons of Coppenhal Last Updated 5th September 2021 ©2019, 2021 Ray Warburton PREFACE I was able to flesh out this clan as a result of a query and a small piece of information from Betty DesRoche (nee Warburton). Later I extended it based on obituaries from the Crewe Chrocucle provided by Alan Jenks. It originates with Peter, born in Church Coppenhall about 1771, and includes branches in Over, Cheshire and Preston, Lancashire. It was recently linked by DNA with the Audley clan from Staffordshire. Peter Warburton. Peter was born abt 1769. in 1807 Coppenhall Moss, Cheshire. Peter appears on Land Tax Assessments from 1807 to 1822. in 1838 Coppenhall Moss, Cheshire. Peter owns 1 acre and rents another 1.25 acres om Coppenhall Moss, and rents a House, garden, building, orchard and 1 acre croft nearby. Landowner for all rentals is George Bostock. ■ Census for Coppenhall, Cheshire, in 1841. Peter (70) is an agricultural labourer living with Mary (60). Peter died in Coppenhall, Cheshire, in 1841. He was buried in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 13 Dec 1841. Coppenhall Clan. Peter’s origins are unclear. There is no matching baptism at or near Coppenhall in on-line sources that matches Peter’s likely date of birth so he probably moved in from elsewhere. His details are deduced from the various available records but involve a degree of speculation. An Elizabeth of appropriate age from Church Coppenhall was buried in 1836 so the marriage of Peter to Mary Yoxall is assumed to be a second marriage. Peter and Mary had both been widowed, and Peter’s father’s name was given a John. Peter and Mary appear together in the 1841 census with appropriate ages. Peter was said to be born in Cheshire. The death of a Peter was registered at Nantwich in 4q 1841 (19 136). He was aged 72 on his burial record implying he was born in 1769. Coppenhall is sometimes referred to as Church Coppenhall. The former is the parish, the latter a town within the parish. It later became the borough of Crewe so the names Crewe and Coppenhall are synonymous. On 30 Dec 1799 when Peter was 30, he first married Elizabeth Baker in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire. Elizabeth was born abt 1779. Elizabeth died in 1836. She was buried in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 20 Mar 1836. Coppenhall Clan. Elizabeth was aged 59 on her burial record. 2 First Generation They had the following children: i. Ann Warburton. Ann was born in Coppenhall Moss, Cheshire, abt 1800. She was christened in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 22 Aug 1800. She was buried in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 24 Apr 1801. Coppenhall Clan. 2 ii. John Warburton (~1802-1871) iii. Ann Warburton. Ann was born in Coppenhall Moss, Cheshire, abt 1805. She was christened in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 22 Aug 1805. Coppenhall Clan. 3 iv. William Warburton (~1808-1874) 4 v. Peter Warburton (~1811-1891) vi. Joseph Warburton. Joseph was born in Coppenhall Moss, Cheshire, on 1 Feb 1817. He was christened in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 21 Sep 1817. Coppenhall Clan. Joseph and his family appear in censuses but have not yet been explored, though it appears he had no issue. 5 vii. Thomas Warburton (1819-1888) On 28 Nov 1837 when Peter was 68, he second married Mary Yoxall in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire. The marriage was registered in 4q 1837 Nantwich 19 157. On the parish record, Peter’s father is named John. Mary was born abt 1781. Coppenhall Clan. Mary’s maiden name was Kirk. She previously married William Yoxall and had a son Ralph, who married Ann Steele. The Mary Steele who married Peter’s son William is probably Ann’s sister. Mary’s death registration hasn’t been found, nor has she been identified in the 1851 census. 3 Descendants of Peter Warburton & Elizabeth Baker Second Generation 2. John Warburton (Peter1). John was born in Coppenhall Moss, Cheshire, abt 1802. He was christened in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 8 Aug 1802. ■ Census for Coppenhall, Cheshire, in 1851. John (48) is a platelayer on the railway living with Mary (51), Frances (12), and Ann (10). ■ Census for Coppenhall, Cheshire, in 1861. John (58) is a mechanic’s labourer living in Dury Lane with Mary (61), and Anne (20). John died in 1871. Coppenhall Clan. John’s wife was a widow by 1871 so John’s death is probably that registered in 1q 1871 Nantwich 8a 225, aged 69. On 21 Jan 1822 when John was 20, he married Mary [Allman] in Warmingham, St Leonard, Cheshire. Mary was born in Acton, Cheshire, abt 1799. ■ Census for Coppenhall, Cheshire, in 1871. Mary (71) is a widow, and farmer of 4 acres, living with Ann (30). Mary died in 1875. Coppenhall Clan. Mary is possibly Mary Allman who married a John Warburton on January 21st 1822 at Warmingham, Cheshire. The location is not near Acton where she was born, or Church Coppenhall, but it is the closest marriage in time and distance to the birth of their first child. She is probably the Mary whose death was registered in 2q 1875 Nantwich 8a 219, aged 75. They had the following children: i. Mary Warburton. Mary was born in Coppenhall Moss, Cheshire, on 28 Apr 1822. She was christened in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 2 Jun 1822. Coppenhall Clan. 6 ii. Joseph Warburton (1825-1887) iii. William (30) is an agricultural labourer living in Church Coppenhall with Mary (30), Peter (5), Elizabeth (3), Sarah (1), and brother Peter (30) an agricultural labourer. ■ Census for Coppenhall, Cheshire, in 1851. William died in Coppenhall, Cheshire, in 1874. Coppenhall Clan. William is missing from the 1881 census so his death is probably that registered in 2q 1874 Nantwich 8a 214, aged 68. Though the age is a little high it is the best fit. On 27 Apr 1836 when William was 28, he married Mary Steele in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire. Mary was born in Warmingham, Cheshire, on 29 Jul 1810. She was christened in Warmingham, Cheshire, on 12 Aug 1810. Mary died in Coppenhall, Cheshire, in 1868. She was buried in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 22 Oct 1868. Coppenhall Clan. Mary’s maiden name is spelt Steele on her baptism, but Steel on her marriage. Her death is probably that registered in 4q 1868 Nantwich 8a 207, aged 58. 5 Second Generation They had the following children: i. Peter Warburton. Peter was born in Coppenhall, Cheshire, abt 1836. ■ Census for Minshull Vernon, Cheshire, in 1851. Elizabeth was born abt 1837. She was christened in Coppenhall (Crewe), St Michael, Cheshire, on 18 Feb 1838.
