TO WILLIAM JAMESON HARVEY AND HENRY HARRISON HARVEY, OF W1LKESBARRE, PENN'A, THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED, IX GRATEFUL RECOGNITION AND LASTING REMEMBRANCE OF THE INTEREST THEY TOOK AND THE All) THEY RENDERED THE AUTHOR IX ITS PREPARATION" AND PUBLICATION. 'Tis pleasant sure to see one's name in print; A book's a book although there's nothing in't." —Byron. FOREWORDS, In view of the interest manifested and the efforts being made in these days by so many of America's sons and daugh ters—individually and in organized bodies—with reference to acquiring and perpetuating whatever information will tend to throw light not only on the general history of past times in this country, but on the lives and pedigrees of the men and women who were the makers of that history, it seems super fluous to offer any explanation or excuse relative to the why and wherefore of this present book. The biographies of individuals make up the history: of a country; and as many of the men and women whose virtues and deeds are sketched in the following pages did, or are doing, in their day and generation, their share towards making gen uine and worthy history, it has been deemed right and proper that the stories of their lives should be embalmed in some per manent form.

For example: • Manuscript pages may have indistinct print. In such cases, the best available copy has been filmed. • Manuscripts may not always be complete. In such cases, a note will indicate that it is not possible to obtain missing pages. • Copyrighted material may have been removed from the manuscript. In such cases, a note will indicate the deletion. Traditional histories of the Royal Navy in the Caribbean have focused on operational matters, producing narratives that neglect examination of the navy as a socio-cultural force in the region. This thesis aims to address this imbalance by focusing on the navy as a unique social group with multiple roles, which was a constant presence in the Caribbean during a particularly turbulent period at the height of the sugar industry.

  • St Leonards, Deal. Notes on Its Architecture Together with the Hatchments and Its Post-Reformation History
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 49 1937 ( 167 ) ST. LEONARDS, DEAL. NOTES ON ITS ARCHITECTURE TOGETHER WITH THE HATCHMENTS AND ITS POST-REFORMATION HISTORY. BY SIR GERAUD WOODS WOLLASTON, K.C.B., K.C.V.O., GARTER KING OF ARMS, THE REV. 0. EVELEIGH WOODROTS1 AND W. P. D. STEBBESTG, F.S.A. ALTHOUGH this church is fairly well known, no detailed description of it seems to have appeared in print, while Sir Stephen Glynn's account in his Notes on the Churches of Kent, 1877, is very inadequate. The authors now deal with its important series of Hatchments, with a number of Post- Reformation documents and inscriptions illustrating its adaptation for congregational and other purposes, preserved among the Canterbury Cathedral archives and in the church; and add an introduction on its architecture, and its evolution as a building.1 Mr. Geoffry Lucas, P.S.A., has been kind enough to allow his plan to be reproduced (Plate I). The church from existing work is seen to consist of a transitional Norman nave of c. 1180, originally of three bays with a clearstory, and with narrow aisles : these in the later thirteenth century were rebuilt on a grander scale with angle buttresses, and with N. and S. doorways. The plan of 1820 (Plate III) shows a S. porch. This has now disappeared. The chancel seems to be the original transitional structure but with thirteenth century alterations. There was a tower in the twelfth century but this fell in the seventeenth century (see p. 182), and was replaced in 1686 by the present brick tower.

HHMMSS Colossus CCIISSMMAASS DDEEBBRRIISS FFIIEELLDD SSUURRVVEEYY 22000055 KEVIN CAMIDGE WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY JANET WITHERIDGE ROBIN WITHERIDGE Acknowledgements I would like to thank everyone involved with this project for the time and effort, so freely given, which has made the project possible. Many of the individuals concerned have given up significant amounts of their annual leave and spare time to take part. The whole project has been carried out by volunteers; no one has received any payment for their contribution. The following all deserve special mention: LHI for providing a grant towards the project. St Andrews University (Martin Dean and Dr Richard Bates), who generously loaned CISMAS their caesium vapour magnetometer for the geophysical survey. Otter Watersports for providing the team members with dive suits at a very favourable price. Wessex Archaeology, in particular Graham Scott and Jen Black, for assistance and information concerning their work on the Colossus designated site assessment carried out by them in 2004. Todd Stevens, for providing a list of artefacts he recovered from the site. Terry Hiron, for providing a list of artefacts he and others recovered from the site. Nigel Boston, who generously loaned CISMAS his Imagenix sidescan sonar for the 2005 geophysical survey. All the members of CISMAS, but especially the following: Brendon Rowe, the treasurer of CISMAS who has organised much of the logistics of the project as well as taking part in all stages of the survey. I owe him a debt of gratitude for taking from my shoulders much of the burden of organising the project. Robin and Janet Witheridge, who took part in the 2004 survey and spent many weekends this year undertaking the documentary research.

It argues that Puerto Rican historiography neglected and silenced the pivotal role of Black Puerto Ricans in this historical event. This historical reflection also proposes a new way to revise the hegemonic historical discourse, which contributes in the marginalization of Black Puerto Ricans from the construction of the island‟s national identity. Keywords: Spanish colonial Puerto Rico, resistance, racial discrimination, silencing. • Men of Kent. 2. Harvey of Eastry
http://kentarchaeology.org.uk/research/archaeologia-cantiana/ Kent Archaeological Society is a registered charity number 223382 © 2017 Kent Archaeological Society MEN OF KENT. 2. HARVEY OF EASTRY By COLIN MATSON THE Harvey Family of East Kent is one of ancient lineage and honour- able history. In her book 'Under Thirty-seven Kings'—which is a history of the Boys Family written by Lilian Boys Behrens—the author shows a skeleton table of descent which traces the ancestry of the Harvey Family back to the Emperor Charlemagne himself and his marriage to Hildgrade in the year 814. Much of this line runs through the females of it; and it passes by way of Gundrada the wife of William de Warrenne and the reputed daughter of William the Conqueror. The parentage of this lady has never been confirmed; and, both before and for some time after her, the descent has the support of tradition only. In this article no attempt will be made to consider the legendary ancestry. Here it is proposed to introduce the branch of the Harvey family which may be considered conveniently as of Eastry; and then to concentrate upon one particular line of it. In this case the author has been fortunate in the possession of an authentic pedigree which was prepared by a genealogical expert at the beginning of this century. This pedigree commences with Richard. Harvey, who died in 1472, seised of land at Barfield (Barville) in the parish of Tilmanstone, which is to be found at about two miles distant to the south of Eastry.
