Missouri Governor Matt Blunt signed legislation in March establishing Western as Missouri Western State University, effective August 28, 2005. “Western has been functioning as a university, and it will now be appropriately recognized for the institution that it is,” said President James Scanlon. “Our profile is a firm foundation for Western’s future as a univer- sity.” Universities are known for their research capabilities. Western’s faculty members are teaching-faculty who are actively engaged in applied research individually and with students. The percentage of permanent fac- ulty at Western who hold the highest degree required in their field - more than 80 percent - is higher than at many regional universities across the country. Western’s academic programs often hold important national accreditations as indicators of their quality. Western has been a strong partner in the educational, economic and social development of our region and becoming a university will only advance that position. “Today, Western’s economic impact on the larger community alone is conservatively estimated at about $160 million per year,” said Ron Olinger, Vice Presi- dent for Financial Planning and Administration. “Traditionally, universities have greater impact than colleges on the economies of their communities, re- gions, and states.” DID YOU KNOW - One hundred and fifty-four faculty and staff serve as officers or board members of organizations in the region.

DID YOU KNOW - Western had 29 student athletes named Presidential Scholars and 45 athletes named to the honor roll for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Griffon Football 2007 Graduating Champions Game Day

SPRATT STADIUM Fans of the MIAA are avid supporters of their foot- ball programs. The MIAA has finished in the top-5 in attendance for the last 16 seasons.

Missouri Western hosted seven football games last season and averaged close to 4,000 fans per game. The game vs. Pittsburg State drew a season high crowd of 5,813 fans at Spratt Stadium. The suc- cess in the stands translates into success on the field as the Griffons went a perfect 5-0 at Spratt Stadium a year ago.

While the Griffons are the main attraction, Western Athletics is also known for its great fan atmosphere, whether it be tailgating prior to the game, the Hy- Vee Halftime Extravaganza or a country concert on campus following the game, Western Athletics pro- vides family fun entertainment for all ages.

One of the most exciting changes in Western Athletics history took place at Spratt Memorial Stadium over the summer of 2006, as the natural grass playing surface was removed and a state-of-the-art synthetic- playing surface called ProGrass was installed. ProGrass is one of the best artificial playing surfaces available in the market today. The artificial surface looks and feels like natural grass, but is much tougher and can stand the wear and tear that Spratt Stadium calls for. The new surface gives Western one of the newer playing surfaces in the midwest and more practice options for the Grif- fons, having both an artificial sur- face and a natural surface to prac- tice on. Spratt Memorial Stadium commenc- es its 29th season of operation in 2007. The stadium has been home to Missouri Western football since 1979, when the Griffons opened the facility with a 44-0 victory against Dana (Neb.) College. The stadium is named in memory of avid Missouri Western supporter Elliot “Bub” Spratt. Spratt Sta- dium’s initial cost of construction was $850,000. Lights were added to the facility six years later. The Griffons played their first night game at Spratt on September 4, 1985, defeating the University of Missouri-Rolla 24-15. The facility seats 6,000 fans and can accommadate spacious hill side seating. In addition to MWSU Football, Spratt Sta- dium hosts Western Women’s Soccer, the Missouri State High School Eight-Man Football Championship as well as the Wen- dy’s High School Football Jamboree. Prior to occupying Spratt Stadium, Missouri Western played its home football games at Noyes Field, a city owned facilty in mid-town St. Joseph.

Excerpt from Griffon Football Game Program - Dedication of Spratt Me- morial Stadium (9/8/1979)

Today is a special day in football history at Missouri Western State College. Since football was first played as a varsity sport at MWSC, the Golden Griffons have met their opponents on the turf of Noyes Field. Their first “home” game was on September 19, 1970 against Pittsburg State University. The score was a lopsided victory for the Kansas team, 63-14. But that was nearly nine years ago and the Golden Griffons have come a long way as a collegiate football team. Today marks a new beginning. Today the Griffons will open their second decade in their own sta- dium, built through the generosity of one man - Elliot “Bub” Spratt. Mr. Spratt was one of the Griffons’ most avid boosters before his death in April of 1976. His roots as a Griffon fan go back to the early days of the college’s predecessor, the St. Joseph Junior College. As an alumnus of that institution, Mr. Spratt followed its growth into a four-year state college whose campus now spans 744-acres. A member of the President’s Club of the Missouri Western State College Foundation, Mr. Spratt bequeathed funds that made possible the construction of this new home for the football Griffons. Additional support came from area athletic supporters and local college funds. A 4,500-seat facility, built at a cost of $850,000, the Spratt Memorial Stadium is the realization of “Bub” Spratt’s dream. 2007 Missouri Western Football 9

MAY 10, 2001 FITNESS CENTER TO BE DEDCATED ST. JOSEPH, Mo. _ Missouri West- ern has announced it will be dedi- cating the MWSU Fitness Center, Saturday, May 12th at 11:30 a.m. in honor of longtime MWSU sup- porter Jack Baker and the Baker Family Trust. Jack Baker and The Baker Family Trust have been supporting Mis- souri Western in numerous endeav- ors throughout the years and are excellent examples of how com- munity support works for Missouri Western. The Baker Fitness Center opened in September of 1994 and has been used extensively by students, fac- ulty, staff members, alumni and the surrounding community. In De- cember of 1993, 67% of the stu- dents who voted in a campus-wide election supported an increase in fees for a $1.5 million facility im- provement package. One portion of this project was a 12,000 square foot facility which would house a 4,000 square foot fitness center, an exercise physiol- ogy lab, the football locker room, football staff offices and multipur- pose space. Two years ago, the fitness center underwent an expansion project, providing more space for Nauti- lus equipment and other exercise equipment to help offset the needs of the more than 4,500 users.

DID YOU KNOW - The director of recre- ation services and facilities was award- ed “The Honors of Epsilon Pi” through the Alpha Gamma Delta women’s fra- ternity at Western. This national award recognizes outstanding service in her role as advisor for the organization.

Griffon Football 2007 Graduating Champions 2007 Season Preview One hundred and fifteen players will report when the Griffons open fall camp the first week of August. Play- ers new to the Griffons squad will report on August 1st, while returning players will report on August 5th. The Griffons will open up the 2007 season on Septem- ber 1st when they host Baker at 6:00 pm at Spratt Stadium. The Griffons return seventeen letter winners on of- fense and fifteen on defense. On defense the Griffon’s will be solid at the linebacker and secondary position, but lost some talented players on the defensive front. They will need some players to step up in the trenches to repeat their strong defensive performances from 2006. On the offensive side of the ball, the Griffons stength will be up front as they return all five starters on the offensive line. Many familiar names will return at the wide reciever position, which will be one of the deepest positions on the 2007 squad. The coaching staff is extreamly excited about the depth and youth at the running back and quarterback positions. The special teams will be strong as 1st-Team All-MIAA punter Jamie Hanson and 2nd Team All-MIAA kicker Dustin Stricker will return. Quarterback Going into fall camp the battle at the quarterback position is between two players, red-shirt sophomore Barron Brad- shaw from St. Louis, Mo. and red-shirt freshman Drew Newhart from Cameron, Mo. Neither player has seen a snap besides on the practice field. This is a position that the Griffons have a load of talent at, but the two competing for the starting job are both very raw when it comes to live in-game action. Both Bradshaw and Newhart have impressed the coaches with their feet and their arm strength. The other two players that will be in fall camp at the quarterback posi- tion are Andrew Bettencourt, a red-shirt freshman from Sacramento, Calif. and Casey Siela a freshman from St. Joseph, Mo. Tailback After Jeremiah White and Jamison Burns combined to rush for close to 1,800 yards last season the running back spot is a position that is going to be young. Going into fall camp Western has three red-shirt freshmen competing for the starting spot. Thomas Hodges from Raymore, Mo. came out of spring ball impressing the coaches the most; he has good size and speed, which should allow him to withstain the constant grind of the Griffons running attack. Ladarrian Page from Lee’s Summit, Mo. is not as big, but his quickness and strength puts him in the mix to see a lot of action this fall. Page is a versatile player that can be used all over the field. The final running back in the mix for the Griffons is Anthony Easterwood from St. Louis, Mo. Easterwood is another guy that has great athletic ability and can bring a new element to the Griffons offense. Griffon fans should look for all three of these guys to get plenty of action in 2007. Fullback Gary Williams, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo. is the front runner at the fullback position. Williams has the size at 6-1, 250 to be the physical player the Griffons need to play the fullback position. Garrett Wood, a senior from Elmo, Mo. is a solid roster man and will be a nice back up for Williams in 2007.

Wide Receiver The Griffons have plenty of speed and depth at the wide receiver position, but will need the consistency in its ranks to help out their young quarterbacks with the passing game. With the loss of their three top pass catchers from a year ago, the Griffons will be seek- ing some players to step up. Joey Harris, a senior from Plattsburg, Mo. will be looked upon for leadership at the receiver position. Last season Harris played in 12 games catching 21 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns. Andrew Mead, a sophomore from Gower, Mo. will also be a big part of the Griffons passing game. Mead caught 21 passes a year ago with two touchdowns and averaged 12.6 yards per catch. Another receiver that got some playing time last season is Anthony Anderson. The junior from Edmond, Okla. played in 11 games hauling in 8 catches for 77 yards and three touchdowns. Two other receivers that will be back for the 2007 season that got some playing time in 2006 are Zach Sharp from Mound City, Mo. and Ferrell McGhee from St. Petersburg, Fla. Sharp played in 10 games with two catches for 24 yards and McGhee played in 8 games and caught two passes for 21 yards. Some newcomers that will be in the mix for playing time are sophomore Cedric Houston from Fort Scott, Kan. and Otis Taylor a junior from Raytown, Mo.

Griffon Football 2007 Graduating Champions 2007 Season Preview Cont.

Tight Ends The Griffons will miss Gijon Robinson at the tight end position, but sophomore Billy Babcock from Stewartsville, Mo. should fill in nicely. Babcock played in 9 games last season for the Griffons, which featured him in some two tight end sets. Alvaro Prado a (6-4, 260, Jr.) from Oxnard, Calif. should come in and be an immediate impact player for the West- ern offense.. Offensive Line The Griffon front five will be strong, but their back-ups are a question mark. Western returns 1st team All-MIAA lineman Roger Allen. Allen has started all 24 games since he arrived on campus as a freshman. Allen will again anchor the right side of the offensive line for Missouri Western. Also returning is senior center Patrick St. Louis. St. Louis was named to the Honorable Mention All-MIAA team a year ago. St. Louis will be starting his second season at the center position for Missouri Western. Todd Shelton is another lineman who got valuable experience last season. The Ferguson, Mo. native played in 11 games and will look to be a force on the front line in 2007. After suffering a season ending injury last sea- son, Travis Kinkade will be ready to go when fall starts. Kinkade will be fighting for a starting position along with Jared Verslues a sophomore from Jefferson City, Mo. Others on the offensive line will have to step up and earn a starting posi- tion or back up role in 2007. Defensive Line This group up-front will be a major question mark for the Griffons in 2007. Western lost all four starters from a year ago. The Griffons currently have eleven defensive lineman on the roster to fill those four spots. Returning players that have seen action are Keith Fillion who played in 10 games last season and Kyle Knighton, a starter for two seasons prior to 2006 will look to return from shoulder surgery last year. Other players returning from last years squad and will look to contribute right away include Brad Davidson, Danial Atkinson, and Jarod Powell. New to the mix are five junior college transfers and one freshman to round out the competition up front. Lone freshman, Andrew Gilmore, from Benton High School in St. Joseph, Mo. has a chance to make an immediate impact. The five juinor college transfers include; Greg Hansborough, Soane Etu, Jose Bonilla, Martin Lane, and Ahmad Griffin. Linebackers Western also has holes to fill in the linebacking core as they lose 1st team All-MIAA linebacker John Matthew Fisher. Senior Seth Hane does return to the squad as he played in all 12 games recording 51 tackles with three of them being for a loss. Also returning is Jacob Schoonover who also played in 12 games recording 39 tackles on the season. Robert Bishop from St. Louis, Mo. came on strong in spring ball and will compete for the third starting linebacker spot. Others looking to break into the linebacker mix include; Joe Stamps, Sean Whiters, Nicholas Blackburn, Brent Paalhar and Cory Elmendorf. Secondary The Griffon secondary returns two safeties that are extreamely experienced in First Team All-MIAA selection J.R. Graham and Honorable Mention All-MIAA selection Chauncey Mayfield. Last season Graham had 71 tackles with 36 of them being unassisted along with two interceptions. Mayfield was right behind Graham as he made 65 tackles with 34 of them being unassisted and snared one interception. Both players will be looked upon to provide leadership and experience in the de- fensive backfield. Heading into fall camp Jarrett Morris and Damarcus Trotter are on top of the depth chart, but Kendall Davis and Jamar Williams are two talented corners that are coming on strong. Special Teams Western returns an extremely experienced special teams unit. First Team-All-MIAA punter Jamie Hanson and Sec- ond Team All-MIAA kicker Dustin Strickler will look to continue their solid performance in the kicking game. Snapping them the ball will be long snapper Lance Neal who returns for his third season. The Griffons will look to cope with the graduation of kick returners Greg Carbin, Jarett Brooks and punt returner Brad Kester. A number of players will compete to fill those roles in the upcoming year. Overall The Griffons will have six home games in 2007 includ- ing Northwest Missouri State who was the runner up in last year’s national championship game. Western opens the season against NAIA opponent, on September 1st at 6:00 pm. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Grif- fons will then begin their home-and-home series with Minnesota-Duluth as they head north to take on the Bulldogs on September 8th. Other home games for the Griffons include; Washburn on September 29th at 1:30 pm, Southwest Baptist on October 13th at 1:30 pm, Missouri Southern on October 27th at 1:30 pm and Central Missouri on November 3rd at 1:30 pm.

Griffon Football 2007 Graduating Champions Milestone Year The 2006 season brought the Missouri Western football team to yet another milestone. Western finished with an overall record of 9-3 and a conference mark of 7-2, leading the Griffons to MISSOURI WESTERN Depth Chart - 7/19/07 a second place finish in the MIAA, No. 11 ranking in the National Poll and their first ever NCAA Divsion II Playoff appearance. The Griffons set the school record for wins with nine for the second year in a row and made it three out of their last four. The season also saw three individual records break as Jamison Burns set the Western record for longest touchdown run in school history with a 97 yard run for a against Missouri Southern on October 14th, 2006. This broke the old record of 95 yards, which was set by Derrick Pitts against Empo- ria State in 2002. Place kicker Dustin Strickler broke the other two records as he made 29 consecutive extra points to break the season and career mark of 23 held by Michael Sierra. Strickler will look to add to this record this season. Western began the 2006 season on a three game winning streak. In the season opener, the Griffons traveled to Edmond, Okla. to take on Central Oklahoma. This game turned out to be a barn burner as the Griffons would end up winning the game 32-29 in double over- time. Quarterback Michael Burton passed for 240 yards going 17-of- 30 with 4 touchdown passes. Jarrett Brooks caught 7 passes for 129 yards and 3 touchdowns. With a 3-0 start Western broke into the national rankings at #16 as the Griffons would travel to Maryville, Mo. to take on #2 NW Missouri State in front of a standing room only crowd. The Bearcats jumped out to a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter, however the Western defense shut down the Bearcat offense and provided good third quarter field position. Two third quarter touchdowns, one by Jeremiah White at the 7:04 mark of the third quarter and a spectacular touchdown grab by Joey Harris at the 3:27 mark would tie the game at 21. The fourth quarter ramained scoreless until Bearcat kicker Tommy Frevert connected on a 41 yard field goal with 4:21 left in the game to give the Bearcats the lead 24-21. Western was unable to score on the last drive of the game, which would result in their first loss of the season. Western rebounded with authority as the Griffons returned home to Spratt Stadium to win the first of six consecutive games defeating Truman State 38-13. J.R. Graham led the way on the defensive side of the ball recording nine tackles including one pass break up. Two come from behind road victories would follow as the Griffons would score 20 unanswered second half points to defeat Central Missouri 30-20. Griffon Football 2007 Graduating Champions CHRIS FAROS AWARD

The Don Christopher Faros Scholarship fund was established in memory of a football alumnus who was killed in a tragic plane crash in December of 1983. Chris Faros, a 1973 Bill Dennis Paul Rhodes Brian Casey Rod Saunders Western graduate, was the captain of the Missouri Western football team during Leon Douglas its inaugural season in 1970. He was a 4-year letterwinner who gained All-District 16 honors after both his junior and senior seasons. Faros was well respected by his teammates for his dedication and determina- tion, and was a leader both on and off the field. Faros was successful in fulfilling his Andy Williams R.D. Helt Brad Armstrong ambitions of coaching football on the major col- Eric Mitchell lege level. He was an assistant coach at both Colorado State University and Drake University, and held the position of offensive coordinator at Memphis State University when tragedy struck. He was among the initial group of inductees se- lected for the Missouri Western Athletic Hall of Fame in the spring of 1990. Last season, senior linebacker Leon Douglas was named the recipient of the Chris Faros Award. Douglas exemplified what Faros’ dedication was like earning numerous on and off the field awards. Brad Eise Douglas led the team in sacks in Terry McCray Glenn DuBois Rich Campbell 2006 as he complied 6.5. He also had 47 tack- les on the season, with 29 of them being solo stops. Since its inception, the Chris Faros Scholarship Fund has provided a great post- graduate opportunity for the former football players shown below and will continue to do so. The fund is coordinated by friends and team- mates of Chris Faros, including Rodney Saun- ders, Dave Hedrick, Joe Vigliaturo and Gold Coat Club President Zack Workman.
