We Are Delighted to Announce That the IH Young Learner Conference Will We are delighted to announce that the IH Young Learner Conference will be hosted by IH Reggio Calabria on the 9th and 10th March 2018! This conference is held every year for the YL Coordinators and DOSs in our network and the programme focuses on trends, management issues and approaches relating to the teaching of Young Learner students. Reggio Calabria is a medium-sized town located in the sunny South of Italy, just across from Sicily. The town is off the typical tourist trail but being situated within easy reach of both mountains and sea, it offers a variety of interesting places to visit, including the local Museum which houses the world-famous “Bronzi di Riace”. You will be hearing more from the team at IH Reggio in the coming weeks, as they are eager tell you about their school and city and how they plan to make the 2018 YL conference a fantastic experience! In the meantime though, to help you plan ahead, they have sent some important information about travel and accommodation options so you can start to plan your trip. The programme of the conference will be as in recent years. Thursday 8th March - Arrival and Welcome Reception in evening Friday 9th March – Full conference day, dinner together in the evening Saturday 10th March – Full conference day, dinner together in the evening Sunday 11th March – Local tourism option, further details to be provided by school Our hosts have negotiated some very good deals with local hotels that are all well placed within the city. The second day of the conference (Saturday) will be hosted at the school, which you can also see on the map provided. The first day (Friday) will be at another venue in the city centre, so which ever hotel you choose you won’t have far to walk. But if you want to be near the school then Hotel Continental and Hotel Excelsior are the closest options. Just a reminder, there is no conference fee to attend but the maximum number of delegates per school is 2 for budgetary reasons. • Accessibility to Italian Remote Regions. When Air Transport Is the Best Alternative?
    1 Laurino, Beria, Debernardi Accessibility to Italian remote regions. When air transport is the best alternative? Antonio Laurino a, Paolo Beria a, Andrea Debernardi b Presenter: Antonio Laurino a Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU), Politecnico di Milano, Italy Phone +39 02 2399 5424, [email protected] , [email protected] b Studio META, Via Magenta 15, Monza, Italy [email protected] Historically, for geographically disadvantaged areas, air transport services have represented the main alternative to guarantee residents' mobility needs. In the last decades, many investments in local airports have been promoted as a way to increase accessibility in many Italian regions. On the other side, transport services have also witnessed important changes as the entrance of low cost carriers, the development of high speed services or the increasing role of long distance passenger coach transport. These services together with an improved intermodality could provide an alternative to access areas of the country. The paper, adopting a policymaker perspective, studies the different passenger transport alternatives for a sample of zones in the catchment area of a local airport. It is based on a long distance multimodal transport model describing the entire Italian long distance supply thus it allows to estimate the generalized cost to access all the zones of the country by road, rail, coach and air services. The analysis of the generalized costs for the period 2013/2014 helps to better understand the role of air transport with respect to the other available modes for each zone. It could also represent the first step to reconsider the possible strategies to improve national accessibility levels.

  • 4 Air Demand Modelling: Overview and Application to a Developing
    4 Air demand modelling: overview and application to a developing regional airport M. Nadia Postorino University ‘Mediterranea’ of Reggio Calabria, Italy Abstract Air demand forecast at airports is an important problem for the airport management and also for the regulator that has to plan a homogeneous development of the overall transport system. The current tendency is towards airport privatization; then, the goal to increase the served demand is one of the most important together with the progress of non-aviation activities. The evolution of the air transport system both in terms of low-cost companies, that generally use regional airports, and new technologies (as regional jets) has given a further impulse to the development of planning methodologies able to support decisions for an efficient distribution of resources. Regional airports can play an important role in this new background if the most suitable developing strategies are identified. This chapter wants to give a general overview about the problem of the air demand modelling, both in terms of theoretical approaches and practical problems. Models are classified with respect to different criteria, and the most suitable models for each planning level are also identified. An application to a regional airport in Southern Italy is also presented in order to test some of the described approaches and to obtain practical indications about applied models and developing strategies to be used. Keywords: air demand; air demand model classification; airport catchment area; time series models;
