As a human being Ike, like many musicians, left a lot to be desired. One of his first songs of note produced was LOVE IS A GAMBLE- Ike and Bonnie Turner (1953). The song was a bit too fast for most shaggers but was a nice “jumper”. Most R&B records of this era had a ballad one side and a Jitterbug for the other side. Most often the ballad was Side A. Bonnie Turner (Bonnie Mae Wilson) was Ike’s third wife. Bonnie sang and played piano. A group that Ike formed in the mid 50’s was Ike Turner’s Rhythm Rockers with lead singer Billy Gales. You might want to check out JUST ONE MORE TIME and I’M TORE UP. Another song by Billy Gales was I’M HURTIN’. Ike and Tina covered this song in a much improved version. The next group was Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm. An R&B classic was ROCKET 88 with lead singer Jackie Brinston. This group put out several songs suitable for the Shag beat including: YOU DON’T LOVE ME, MATCHBOX, YOU KEEP ON WORRYING ME, YOU’VE CHANGED MY LOVE, THE BIG QUESTION’ Some of the early Ike and Tina (Anna Mae Bullock) songs were with the Kings of Rhythm and then it became Ike and Tina Turner or the Ike and Tina Turner Re- vue. There are so many great songs here that I’ll not mention but a few. For High energy it is hard to beat PROUD MARY. One lesser known great song was I’M GONNA CUT YOU LOOSE. I can’t name my favorite Ike and Tina because it comes down to two: HONKY TONK WOMAN and OOH POO PAH DOO ( the ver- sion with the 60 second classical piano introduction). A line by Tina from the song A FULL IN LOVE (1960) was “I love a man and all that he do”. This opinion obviously changed over the years but the fact is that Ike made Tina and Tina made Ike. One last song I will mention was released in 2001 and frequently gets payed in shag clubs I NEED A-NUDDIN. Ike sings in this song. Ike Turner died of a cocaine OD in 2007. This is just ramblings of my mind and I do not guarantee accuracy. I will gladly accept corrections. If interested you should be able to listen to all these songs on U Tube. Don Williams 2 3 Page 3 NEW SOS Board MEMBER: Another LNSC member was elected as a SOS board member at the ACSC meeting during Mid-Winter. Best of Luck, Pat Hensley 3 4 Page 5 From Amanda Berry: Just wanted you to know about a planned event Monday Feb. 4th at Blue Moon Tavern in Newton. The DJ is Gene Hensley, from 6:00 - 9:00. Blue Moon is located at 100 N. Main Ave in Newton. The streets are torn up but there is plenty of parking behind the restaurant or in the BB&T parking lot. Blue Moon had great, reasonably priced food and a bar. Come out and support our dance and eat dinner! Patsy the young owner of this restaurant is very excited to open his doors to all of us. They are looking forward to a great crowd Stuff We Didn’t Know Part 1 Submitted by Charlie Foxx A SHOT OF WHISKEY In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a "shot" of whiskey. THE WHOLE NINE YARDS American fighter planes in WW2 had machine guns that were Fed by a belt of cartridges. The average plane held belts that were 27 feet (9 yards) long. If the pilot used up all his ammo he was said to have given it the whole nine yards. BUYING THE FARM During WW1 soldiers were given life insurance policies worth $5,000. This was about the price of an average farm so if You died you "bought the farm" for your survivors. IRON CLAD CONTRACT This came about from the ironclad ships of the Civil War. It meant something so strong it could not be broken. PASSING THE BUCK / THE BUCK STOPS HERE Most men in the early west carried a jack knife made by the Buck knife company. When playing poker it was common to place one of these Buck knives in front of the dealer so that everyone knew who he was. When it was time for a new deal- er the deck of cards and the Knife were given to the new dealer. If this person didn't want to deal he would "pass the buck" to the next player. If that player accepted then "the buck stopped there". RIFF RAFF The Mississippi River was the main way of traveling from north to south. Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they were expensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of way over rafts which were considered cheap. The steering oar on the rafts was called a "riff" and this transposed into riff raff, meaning low class. COBWEB The Old English word for "spider" was "cob". SHIP STATE ROOMS Traveling by steamboat was considered the height of comfort. Passenger cabins on the boats were not numbered. In- stead they were named after states. To this day cabins on ships are called staterooms. SLEEP TIGHT Early beds were made with a wooden frame. Ropes were tied across the frame in a criss-cross pattern. A Straw mattress was then put on top of the ropes. Over time the ropes stretched, causing the bed to sag. The owner would then tighten the ropes to get a better night's sleep. 4 5 Page 4 February Birthdays 2/7 2/16 Carl Phillips 2/17 Chad Duggins 2/18 Dianne Tannery 2/21 Jan Swedenberg 5 6 Page 6 Joys Happy Anniversary: Carl & Deborah Phillips 46 years on February 3rd FP & Gloria Wright 19 years on February 12th George & Amy Dunn 5 years on February 14th Concerns Our thoughts & prayers go out to: Tommy Fuller on the death of his Mother & Aunt Carl Phillips who is having health issues Jeff Surratt who had knee replacement surgery Wayne Kerley who is experiencing some health issues Don Williams still recovering from shoulder surgery.
