At first some Porsche purists lamented the Porsche 914's seemingly humble origins. They whispered the "V-Word" . Volkswagen. The reality was that the 914 is a blood descendant of the seminal Gmund Porsche, the first car to wear the family name and the crest, a pure sports car designed around a Volkswagen- sourced air-cooled flat-four and a mid-engine configuration. Porsche had no illusions about the technological and commercial realities of their new sports car. The 914 project began life as a joint venture between Volkswagen and Porsche who needed an entry level replacement for the four- cylinder 912. With the economies of scale brought by a production liaison with Volkswagen, the 914 could be commercially viable. The prototype 914 appeared early in 1968 just as Porsche was poised to shed its reputation as a giant killer on the world's race tracks. The man heading the 914 project was Porsche R&D chief Ferdinand Piech, Ferdinand Porsche's grandson who created, almost simultaneously with the 914 project, the all- conquering Porsche 917 Le Mans endurance racer. The lower price of the 914 brought a new clientele to Porsche showrooms. The 914 quickly outsold its pricier 911 stablemate while staying true to Porsche's technological heritage with friendly Porsche dynamics, solid handling and, in the case of the 914/6, traditionally ferocious Porsche brakes.

These innovative new Porsches – the Cayenne S Hybrid, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid and the 918 Spyder – were developed according to the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy -- more power on less fuel, increased efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. With three different designs, hybrid pioneer Porsche is emphasizing the broad range of this new drive technology. The Cayenne S Hybrid features a parallel full hybrid system, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car has electric front-wheel drive and a flywheel mass battery, and the 918 Spyder has a plug-in hybrid system that enables the battery to be charged from the regular electrical network. The 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid, based on the all-new Cayenne model line that makes its North American debut at the 2010 New York Auto Show, is Porsche’s first production hybrid. Featuring a highly sophisticated parallel full hybrid system, it has a combined power output of 380 horsepower from the supercharged V6 combustion engine and an electric motor, the Cayenne S Hybrid combines the performance of a V8 with the economy of a V6.

As with the other titles we have reviewed in this series, the Porsche 917 book also contains just 128 pages in total. © Porsche 917 – Zuffenhausen’s Le Mans and Can-Am Champion The Porsche 917 was introduced in 1969 as the company’s entrant in the World Manufacturers’ Championship that year, and although the 917 was at first a difficult car to handle, it would soon prove itself. Porsche had spent many years rising up the ladder in terms of international victory and success, but class wins was about all the company could realistically hope to achieve.
