Championship SOUTH AFRICAN STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP 6 – 9 FEBRUARY 2018 PECANWOOD GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB WELCOME TO PECANWOOD The management and staff look forward to welcoming you to the ‘new’ Pecanwood and wish you all the best in your week with us. The estate’s centrepiece is the Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, which has undergone some major works during the past year. These are merely the results of age and include an ambitious programme to refurbish the course’s bunkers and the installation of a completely new, more efficient, and even more water-wise irrigation system. Although the course will receive more attention this year it eagerly awaits your best efforts to tame this classic “risk and reward” Jack Nicklaus showpiece. The course, with the clubhouse as a focal point, is a superb venue for the SA Stroke Play Championship. Whether you are at the clubhouse to enjoy FRANCOIS SCHOEMAN breakfast before your game of golf, a light lunch CEO | PECANWOOD ESTATE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION with friends or the team, or a snack with your sundowners on the terrace to celebrate your experience, we will be there for you. A CHAMPIONSHIP TEST n behalf of GolfRSA, I would like to welcome all Otournament participants, golf administrators, members of the media and spectators to the 2018 South African Stroke Play Championship. The SA Stroke Play Championship has a proud history of producing great champions, many of whom have gone on to achieve great things, including Major winners Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman. For the last three years, the trophy has been lifted by a player from the strong international contingent and I’d like to welcome all of our foreign visitors and wish them the best over the course of their stay in SA. I look forward to seeing how this elite field takes on the Pecanwood layout, a superb Jack Nicklaus design that GRANT HEPBURN will offer a true test of championship golf to all players. CEO | GOLFRSA Thanks go to the Pecanwood committee and members, including the greenkeeping staff, for all their hard work in preparing for this tournament and for allowing this prestigious tournament to be hosted on their course. Thanks must also go to the North West Golf Union for ensuring that we have a successful championship. The first Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course in ABOUT Africa was officially opened back in July 1998, when the world’s greatest-ever golfer and esteemed PECANWOOD course architect played the first round on his new lakeside creation. Located adjacent to the Hartbeespoort Dam and on land that was once home to a tomato farm, Pecanwood Golf and Country Club has, over the last PECANWOOD G&CC two decades, grown into one of the finest courses in Hole Par Length the land. Like most Nicklaus designs, it has 1 4 424 generous landing areas, numerous cleverly-placed 2 4 407 bunkers and well-contoured greens. Numerous tee 3 3 162 boxes allow for all levels of golfer to enjoy the layout, 4 4 379 but stretched to its tips – over 7 000 metres – it will 5 5 528 be a very challenging proposition, even for the best 6 4 434 amateurs in the game. 7 5 582 8 3 215 9 4 430 10 5 507 NOTABLE CHAMPIONS 11 4 410 12 5 518 2013 & 2012 Haydn Porteous 13 3 187 2008 Branden Grace 14 4 412 2004 Dawie van der Walt 15 4 374 2001 Richard Sterne 16 4 422 1998 Trevor Immelman 17 3 207 1989 Ernie Els 18 4 422 1977 Mark McNulty Total 7 020 1969 & 1970 Dale Hayes Henrik Stenson Charley Hoff man Adam Scott Jordan Spieth Tommy Fleetwood Rickie Fowler Justin Thomas Louis Oosthuizen AROUND THE WORLD, PERFORMANCE SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS. Harvest News A small block of Sauvignon Blanc was taken in last week from a nearby vineyard in the False Bay area. We are happ y with the great sugar/acid balance and some really nice flavours. We have experienced no heat wave as yet, still experiencing coolish weather and we are in no rush to start early as we want to ensure some nice bright acidity. Regarding the weather experie nced in past years, although we had late spring rains - right into the growing season and huge winds, we've had zero precipitation since beginning November. Thus although bunch counts are consistent with last year, we are seeing yields down 25/30% so far, small berries, hopefully with more concentration of flavour? Time will tell! Wine Awards/Ratings The news of the ratings received by The Gypsy 2006 and the FMC (Forrester Meinert Chenin) 2008 in the authoritative Wine Spectator in their December 16th 2009 issue was a joyous end to 2009. The Gypsy 2006 rated 93 Points and the FMC 2008 92 Points. Previously the FMC has also garnered ratings of 93 for the 06 and 07 vintages and the 05 vintage was rated as one of the Top 250 wines of the World. News from the Winery Ken Forrester Vineyards are totally committed to provide a rewarding working environment for our employees. To further this focus and as a reward for all the hard work, the employees are taken on regular educational trips, e.g. to Robben Island in 2009. On Saturday 9th January all our employees attended a performance of CATS, based on T.S.

Note the clubhouse, tennis courts, squash court, swimming pool & play area for kids. 2 Letter from the Chairman Zwartkop Country Club is steeped in history. Its fairways and greens speak softly and with reverence of the Golfing Greats who have graced them over the past 75 years – from Jack, Arnie, Gary, Lee and all the others. Many an exhibition match, many a Championship and many a SA PGA Tour event have been fought for and won here. More recently, the Ladies Tour have added to this beauty and all have played as determinedly as the men from yesteryear. Over the years the changes to the original course have tightened and improved the experience of membership and playing The Game at Zwartkop CC. Yet, despite these 75 years we are blessed with a Club that is vibrant and forward thinking. The Zwartkop juniors continue to grow in number and capability and the future is on a solid base. We are blessed with a growing number of Bowlers, who continue to do the Club proud. The Bowls section is a strong and focused group of wonderful people who play to enjoy themselves, but always to win! They too do us proud at provincial and national level. Similarly, the Snooker section is a tightly knitted group who consistently perform and represent Zwartkop CC at all levels. We value the commitment and exemplary pride they display. No Club exists, and indeed grows, without the requisite supporting functions.

News The European Tour Makes Its First Stop At Valderrama 15/04/2016 Spanish News Andalucía hosts the Open de España for the 11th time - European Tour Five decades after its first visit, the Open de España will return to Andalucía on April 14-17. Real Club Valderrama and the Sergio García Foundation, have joined forces in order to bring this storied event that has been played only ten times previously on Andalusian courses. The first was on 1966 at the neighbouring and newly opened RCG Sotogrande, where Argentina’s Roberto de Vicenzo stole the show. Four years later, RCG Las Brisas (Marbella), another Robert Trent Jones layout, saw a home winner. Ángel Gallardo, current Vice-Chairman of the European Tour, won by two shots over England’s Neil Coles and Ireland’s Christy O’Connor Sr. “I had always dreamt of winning my national Open; that was the most thrilling moment of my career” recalls Gallardo. Nine years passed before the event returned in 1979 to southern Spain at Torrequebrada (Benalmádena, Málaga), a course designed by the recently deceased José Gancedo — who was the leading amateur in the 1970 edition won by Gallardo. South African Dale Hayes triumphed at Torrequebrada, and for the first time, the event had a title sponsor – Benson&Hedges – something unthinkable up to then. Over the last decade, the Open de España has enjoyed the E: [email protected] W: www.assetfolio.com T: +34 952 908 120 support of Reale as its main sponsor. In 1983 and 1987, Marbella was again the venue. During the 80s, the Costa del Sol was widely recognized in the tourism industry for its first class hotel and golf infrastructure.
