The new coordinators are Paula Dietrich (Marquette), Anthony Barnes (Kalamazoo) and Colin Campbell (Royal Oak). Because the pandemic halted the planning for the second semester in-person networking activities, we have begun to beef up our online presence. The coordinators continue to have primary responsibility for posting on social media. In addition, Annette Christiansen has begun to record a video series called “2 Minute Teacher Tips” that is being posted on MEA’s YouTube channel. A total of eight episodes have been recorded, edited and submitted to Creative Projects for upload. We continue to gather content for both email communication and website content. We are working with staff to secure a dedicated MiNE tab on the website to house content and obtain email addresses from New Ed cards or Early Enrollment program to begin a monthly contact. This summer, MiNE is hosting a book study on Facebook for the book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? by Beverly Daniel Tatum, PhD. This book was selected as a result of a vote by Facebook followers of this group. The online discussion will start the first week of July. We have recorded and posted our seventh podcast featuring Brittany Perrault (incoming AEM president) and our eighth podcast featuring Brett Smith (MEA secretary-treasurer). We have also successfully secured the ability to post the podcasts to iTunes, in addition to the original SoundCloud platform. We are hoping that the addition of iTunes and improved communication and advertisement of the MiNE program will increase traffic to the podcast. 3 We will request SCECH credit for a fall book study based on reading Creating Cultures of Thinking: The 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools. Since we cannot guarantee the ability to have a fall and spring face-to-face networking study, we hope to engage members virtually. Why I Teach We started a recruitment video series where educators discuss their reasons for entering and remaining in the profession. The first two videos are recorded and edited and the first can be found on MEA’s YouTube channel. The second will be posted soon and we will be recording additional episodes in the near future. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Annette Christiansen and Kia Hagens will be training on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. They are currently scheduled to train in Kearsley and Fenton. They have met to finalize the content. They are also hosting two online book studies, White Fragility and How to be an Antiracist. These are both SCECH approved and will include a weekly Zoom meeting and weekly posts on www.Schoology.com. These five-week book studies will begin in August and will be repeated throughout the school year. Annette and Kia also worked with Bryant Warren to facilitate a discussion in the South-Western Zone on the book White Fragility. Wayne State University Grant Proposal We are working to secure an NEA Great Public Schools (GPS) grant for a project with Wayne State University that focuses on both cultural competency for current educators and recruitment and retention of a diverse teaching force. The project is two-fold; part one is to work with four districts (Saline, Grosse Pointe, Southfield, and Pontiac) to train educators regarding diversity, equity and inclusion; and part two is to select mentors from the educators who successfully complete the training who will work with high school students interested in majoring in education. Wayne State University will host a week-long residency program in the summer beginning in 2021. The mentors will continue supporting these students as they graduate high school and matriculate into college. We have met with UniServ directors, local leaders and district leadership to plan the program and also meet regularly with Wayne State University to draft the grant application. Trauma-Informed Schools We continue to meet with the Michigan ACEs initiative. In addition, we created a trauma training for the Summer Conference called “Becoming Trauma-Informed and Supporting Resiliency During and After the Pandemic” that focuses on the needs of both the educator and students. 4 Daily and Almost Daily Updates Annette Christiansen sends emails (originally daily and now approximately every other day) to staff and leadership. These emails focus on the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and U.S.
