Good evening everyone and welcome to the New Croft for tonight’s Suffolk Premier cup game against Needham Market who I would like to welcome to Haverhill and hope you have a safe journey home after the game. Well the first piece of news I will announce is the departure of Fergus as our first team manager off the back of a meeting over the weekend where it was decided Fergus would move on from the club through mutual consent as over the weekend we received an approach from his old club Walsham Le Willows who indicated they would like to speak to him concerning their vacant first team managers role. Obviously this is Fergus’s old club where he was last year assistant manager and is also local to him so when they informed him of their interest, he indicated he was interested in speaking to them and would consider excepting the position if this was offered to him. We as a committee fully appreciate his honesty but we are also aware of the job in hand at this club and we need to have a management team who are fully committed to the cause and the need to develop our current and future playing squad so we expressed we cannot afford to wait around and have uncertainty which was acknowledged and it was agreed a hand shake would be best for all parties so we can concentrate on the job in hand. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Fergus for his hard work during his short time at the club as we have seen many positives that ultimately have sparked interest from another club and we wish him all the best for the future and hope to see him back in the dugout soon. In the meantime we have asked assistant manager James Bloomfield to step up with the help of Jemel Fox who will take on a player coach role and we know James will be looking to add to his coaching team so I would like to wish James all the best of luck as he takes up the seat of first team manager where tonight will see him kick off with a massive test against a team 2 divisions higher than ourselves but this may be a good opportunity to try different things and tweak to the team to try and turn around a recent dip in form. Hope you enjoy tonight’s game. Ali - Chairman

Good Evening and welcome to The Culina Hub, The New Croft for tonight’s cup fixture vs Needham Market. I would first like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to be first team manager of such a big club in this area and with the support of you all we can build something hopefully a bit special here. I know how important this club is to local people, with the hard work that has gone on here for the club to reach the position it’s currently in and with the same level of support behind myself and the team I know we will have a team here that you will he proud to watch every week. Please welcome yourself to me in the coming weeks and I look forward to meeting you all. The season so far has been a really mixed one with some big wins against very good sides such as Whitton and Godmanchester along with some disappointing defeats in games I really feel we could’ve taken points from and exits from the FA competitions earlier than we would have liked. However, I hope what is noticeable is that although we have a young average age, we do have a high number of very talented and technically gifted footballers who if given the right support, work hard together, and playing along side enough experience to guide us through games could very soon be a really strong outfit in the division. It’s well documented that we do not have the budget of the top few teams in the league and we cannot go out and buy the tried and tested. This doesn’t mean we can’t compete with these sides, it just means we need to do things a little differently. We are in early stages of this process and with your continued fantastic support and a few changes from my side you will soon see us come out the other side. Enjoy Tonight’s game and hopefully we will offer you a performance we can all be proud of. James

The ‘Marketmen’ history in brief

Needham Market Football Club was officially formed in 1919 although records do indicate that games were played in the late 1890’s in the town. The original home for the club was Young’s Meadow until a move to Crowley Park was the base until 1996. The club then moved and opened a new development called ‘Bloomfields’. With the passing away of former player Arthur Rodwell leaving the club some money and with obtaining a successful Lottery Grant, we purchased the land the club is now situated on. With a great deal of hard and prudent work by some very enthusiastic individuals, we now find ourselves situated in a facility that we totally own and the club is truly proud of. The complex is named after club stalwart Derrick Bloomfield who has given more than 70 years service to the club. As well as being a player Derrick has held virtually every role in the club. To recognise his service the club awarded him a testimonial match when Town Football Club visited the ground in 2004. He was also presented with a long service award from for his achievement. When Needham Market Football Club first entered the Suffolk & Ipswich Football League (then known as the Ipswich & District League), it was also the playing arena for Clacton Town, Harwich & Parkeston, Hadleigh United, Stowmarket Town, Sudbury Town (now known as AFC Sudbury), and Woodbridge Town. Over the yeas the club has won many trophies with one of the most notable being crowned champions of the Senior Division of The Suffolk & Ipswich League in the 1995 / 1996 season. This coincided with the opening of ‘Bloomfields’ and a new chapter in the clubs history, as we then applied for promotion to the Jewson (then Ridgeons now Thurlow Nunn) League Division 1 which was duly accepted. Other honours won by the club include The Suffolk & Ipswich League Cup in the 1977 / 1978 season and the 1979 / 1980 season. The Suffolk Football Association Junior Cup was won in the season 1984 / 1985 and a successful trip to the home of Ipswich Town Football Club; saw the club victorious in The Suffolk Football Association Senior Cup in the season of 1989 / 1990 and again in the season of 2004 / 2005. The final was also reached in this competition in the seasons of 1970 / 1971, 1979 / 1980, 1998 / 1999 and 1999 / 2000, unfortunately having to settle for runners-up spot on each occasion. The Reserve Team won The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League Reserves Division in the seasons of 1970 / 1971 and 1971 / 1972, and also The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League Intermediate B Division in the season of 1993 / 1994. Division Three of The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League was also won in the seasons of 1985 / 1986 and 2003 / 2004. After moving to the Essex & Suffolk Border League the Division Two title was won in the season of 1998 / 1999, and a year later came runners up in the League Cup losing out to Senior Division side Gas Recreation. The Reserve Team are currently playing in the Ridgeons Reserve League North Division. The Third Team or A Team as they were known, won The Suffolk & Ipswich League Division Eight Championship in the season 1983 / 1984, and were also successful in winning the Orwell Cup in the seasons of 1992 / 1993 and 1995 / 1996. In the season of 1996 / 1997 they also won The Saul Charity Cup. On the subject of The Saul Charity Cup it is an honour to have been the inaugural winners of this competition when first held in the season of 1935 / 1936. In the season of 2003 / 2004 they won Division Three of The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League and followed this success up a year later by winning Division 2 of The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League. This side also became the first A Team to win The Suffolk Football Association Primary Cup in the season of 2004 / 2005, and also became the highest placed A Team to reach Division One of The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League. The club no longer runs an A Team as most of the clubs young players now start in the reserve team. After being in The Ridgeons League Division 1 for a number of seasons we finally finished as runners up in the season of 2004 / 2005. This was a big thing for the club and to the Manager at that time Mark Morsley for all his efforts in getting the club promotion. In the clubs inaugural season in the Ridgeons Premier Division they finished in a very creditable 6th place, and had a good run in The FA Vase going out to eventual winners Nantwich Town 6-3 AET. Manager Mark Morsley left the club at the end of the season under good terms after being appointed Manager of AFC Sudbury who had been newly promoted to The Ryman League. The club acted swiftly and appointed Danny Laws and Chris Tracey as joint managers for the 2006 / 2007 season. In their first season of Management they assembled a very young and talented squad of players who gained experience and some notable results. The club won its first ever FA Cup tie when they defeated Desborough Town at home. In The Suffolk Football Association Premier Cup a record crowd of 750 saw Ipswich Town win 3-0 at ‘Bloomfields’, but the biggest achievement was finishing in fourth position in the Ridgeons League Premier Division on 81 points and also lifting The East Anglian Cup after beating Concord Rangers 2-1 in the final. Continued over page….. The ‘Marketmen’ history continued

For season 2007 / 2008 Danny Laws was sole Manager after Chris Tracey decided to return to AFC Sudbury. This season proves to be fantastic for Danny and the players as the club moves to a new level making historic landmarks along the way. Finishing runners-up in the Ridgeons League Premier Division with a must win game on the last day of the season to first placed Soham Town Rangers needed. Unfortunately the game resulted in a 4-0 defeat. We were also losing semi-finalists in The FA Carlsberg Vase losing out to eventual winners Kirkham & Wesham. However Suffolk Football Association Premier Cup glory was achieved beating Leiston on penalties in the final held at Portman Road the home of Ipswich Town Football Club. Silverware was not finished there as victory for the first time in the Ridgeons League Challenge Cup beating Gorleston 2-1 in the final finished off the season on a high. Another good season in 2008 / 2009 for the club as a third place finish in the Ridgeons League Premier Division was achieved just missing out on 2nd place on the last day of the season. Consecutive Suffolk Football Association Premier Cup finals achieved losing 3-2 to Lowestoft Town in what was a very exciting game of football. Having gone 2-0 down early on and somewhat looking out of the game, but the never say die attitude of the side were soon on level terms and only a last gasp penalty took the game away from extra time. A great run in The FA Vase once again this time going out to the lottery of a penalty shoot out to Chalfont St. Peter in the Quarter Finals. We now move more upto date and look at the 2015 / 2016 season which saw the 1st Team competing at Step 3 of The Football League Pyramid for the first time in the Clubs History. Having won the Ryman North Division the previous Season they were now playing in The Ryman League Premier Division, which turned out to be a very hard season compared to the previous one. Survival was the main aim and this was achieved finishing in 20th position. The Reserve Team struggled in The Thurlow Nunn Division 1 League finishing bottom of the table with the Youth Team finishing in 3rd place in The Thurlow Nunn Youth League. Disappointingly both FA Competitions Cup & Trophy were exited at the first hurdle but once again the Youth Team had a good run in The FA Youth Cup. The 1st Teams second Season at Step 3 Season 2016 / 2017 saw them occupy a Play-Off Spot for virtually all of the season leading the table for several weeks along the way. However results towards the end of the season saw them drop out of contention finishing in 9th place, but this was a great achievement compared to the previous season’s relegation battle. The youngsters in the Reserve Team found life tough again in The Thurlow Nunn Division 1 finishing third from bottom and the Under 18 Youth Teams both finished in 6th place in their respective leagues (Thurlow Nunn Central Division & Eastern Junior Alliance). Overall the Club is in a very good position both on and off the field with many exciting times ahead for everyone connected and involved with Needham Market FC. Season 2017 / 2018 was an indifferent year for the 1st Team with too many inconsistent results seeing the side in the bottom half of the table but always clear of the relegation area. The ethos of the Reserve Team was to continue to play youngsters and despite struggling physically at times the football played was very good and often complemented by the opposition. The midweek Under 18 Youth Team finished in mid table but could not finish their league campaign due to such a backlog of fixtures caused by the wet weather. The club increased its Youth section competing in the Eastern Junior Alliance League at U18, U16, U14 & U13 levels with a mixture of league and cup results. Season 2018 / 2019 overall was a very good year both on and off the pitch for the whole club. The 1st Team were moved sideways to the Southern League South following The FA’s League Re-Structuring. This was by no means an ideal scenario but having been in the play-off frame for the majority of the season they fell away in the second half finishing in 11th position. The Reserve Team got off to a less than ideal start finding themselves near the foot of the table and in a relegation battle, but at the turn of the year their form was transformed and they finished comfortably clear of trouble and their highest finish in he Eastern Counties League Division 1 North. The U18’s had their best season finishing 3rd in the league just missing out on the end of season play- offs. The introduction of our Women’s Team was a breath of fresh air as they had a tremendous first season finishing as runners up in the league and reaching two cup finals, something that was never thought possible having only been formed at the start of the season. The Eastern Junior Alliance Youth Teams all performed very well in their respective leagues and 3 out of 4 Cup Finals reached were successful in bringing home winners medals. The 3G Pitch is now fully complete along with a 2 storey building housing changing rooms, spectator toilets and a disabled lift downstairs, with a café and bar and function room on the first floor ready for business. A viewing veranda round three sides of the upstairs completes the building. Overall the Club is in a very good position both on and off the field with exciting times ahead for everyone involved with Needham Market FC as we continue to be ‘SUFFOLK’S TOP NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB’.

James is a great addition to the Management Team reinforcing its strength and he also runs his own Clinic in Haverhill www.knots-clinic.my-free.website/ Paul Rose - Kit Man & Logistics Rosey is the sort of bloke that would do anything for you, ensures the players have everything they possibly need to look the part and improve performance, metaphorically speaking he is a ‘giant’ in the dressing room. Paul originally joined the club as an Academy Coach, but now as taken to the Kitman's role like a duck to water with no job too small for him and another great member of the 1st Teams Management Team. Marcus Garnham – Goalkeeper Bury Town, AFC Sudbury, Lowestoft Town, Leiston Marcus joined the club in the summer of 2019 having played the previous two seasons at Leiston. He is a top keeper and we are delighted he agreed to join the club and with his experience he will form an excellent partnership behind his fellow defenders and will be hard to beat as he looks to keep many clean sheets. Finlay Shorten - Goalkeeper Product of the youth academy, Finn will be looking to push Marcus Garnham hard in training and take any chance that comes his way. James Baker – Defender/Forward Previous clubs: Chelmsford City, Braintree Town, Eastleigh, Welling United, Billericay Town, AFC Sudbury James signed towards the end of Oct 2018 and brings a wealth of experience to the team. A brief spell away when he played in the ECL Premier, he returned to the club and earnt himself a contract after some impressive displays with the Reserves. Daniel Morphew - Defender Thetford Town, Haverhill Rovers, Dereham Town Dr. Dan Morphew having completed his Doctorate last season must make him the most intelligent player in the team. He is 100% no nonsense player who is elegant on the ball yet rugged in the tackle and is also a threat at set pieces having scored 15 goals in his first two seasons from defence. Despite what people think he is no relation to Keiran. Keiran Morphew - Defender Keiran is the first player to have come through the Clubs Academy to sign a contract with the first team. He was given his chance under in 2013 and since then has established himself as a fans’ favourite for his committed all action displays. He has drawn many admirers from the pro game and was very close to being offered a full pro contract at Ipswich Town. He is a natural leader with his commanding performances, and he is the current longest serving player in the team now in his eighth having passed 250 club appearances. Despite what people think he is no relation to Daniel. Callum Sturgess - Defender Previous clubs: Crystal Palace, Colchester United Callum joined us permanently from Colchester United a couple of seasons ago. He has been very impressive with his high energy displays and has received many MOTM awards. He has a very bright future in the game. Jordoa Diogo - Defender/Midfield Previous Clubs: Chelmsford City, Lewes, Aveley, KR Reykjavik, Panserraikos, Kerkyra, Levadiakos Left Sided Defender or joined the club in Mid Sept 2019. Gareth Heath - Midfield Previous clubs: Leiston, AFC Sudbury Gareth enters his second season with the Marketmen having joined us from near neighbours Leiston in what was a fantastic signing for the club. Gareth is without doubt one of the finest players at this level of football in the country, regularly featuring in the Isthmian team of the year. His dedication and fitness are legendary, and he is a fantastic example to the younger members of the team. Luke Ingram – Midfield/Forward Previous clubs: Bury Town & AFC Sudbury Now entering his 6th season with the first team ‘Ingers’ is the second longest serving player with the club. He is a fans favourite, a great athlete and immensely talented and a certain match winner when firing on all cylinders. He can play in just about any position of the pitch, but on his day impossible to handle. Joseph Marsden – Defender/Midfield Previous clubs: Lowestoft Town, Leiston In his first season with the club 2018/19 Joe proved to be an instant success as he finished as top scorer for the club with 21 goals in all competitions. Already a fans favourite his talent is there for all to see and he will be keen to push on even further this coming season as he looks to increase his goal tally as well as providing many assists for his team mates. Continued over page….. The ‘Marketmen’ players - cont.

Craig Parker - Midfield Bury Town, Chelmsford City, Leiston, AFC Sudbury, King's Lynn Town Parks returned to the club this season after an 8-year absence where he had previously played 176 times for the first team scoring 112 goals, not bad stats for a midfield player. In his last season with the club 2010/11 he scored 41 goals in all competitions which is still a club record for a single season. We are delighted he has now agreed to re-join the club where he had 4 very successful seasons and we all look forward to seeing him again in Needham Red. Russell Short – Defender/Midfield Previous clubs: Bury Town, Biggleswade Town, St. Neots Town Shorty signed for the club in early Feb 2019 and is an excellent addition to the squad. His versatility in both defence and midfield gives many options and he teams up again with Wilks who managed him at Bury Town. Samuel Squire - Midfield Previous clubs: Cambridge United Sam was with the club last season on Loan from Cambridge United and performed solidly week in week out. Unfortunately, he got released in the summer and the club didn't think twice to snap him up on a deal. He is a robust and disciplined defensive minded midfielder. He breaks up play well and maintains possession well for the team. Joe Neal - Forward Joe has joined the club On Loan from League Two Side Cambridge United. He is thought of very highly by his parent club and was rewarded a two- and half- year contract with the first team. We are delighted he has recently extended his loan until the end of Jan-20. He will be keen to start establishing himself and scoring for the Marketmen.

Mobile: 07966-102993. E-Mail: [email protected] By David Richardson All too often in the aftermath of alleged incidents of racism, we see clubs and leagues put out an obligatory statement and then try to move on from the matter as swiftly as possible. But, following the latest blight on the game, Hartlepool United deserve credit for the way they responded to the unsavoury scenes we saw during their National League game with Dover Athletic when striker Inih Effiong was subject to racist abuse and gestures from spectators in the Pools end. His team-mate Ricky Modeste was also caught up in the incident, while Pools midfielder Gus Mafuta was clearly upset by what he heard as he told the supporter to get out of the ground. An arrest has been made by Cleveland Police and we hope a heavy sanction is handed out should the person be found guilty. They have no place in our football grounds and we all have a responsibility to unite and drive them away. Both Dover and the National League made their feelings clear in statements released after the game. Dover also pointed out that blame should not be shifted on to the victim. Effiong celebrated his goal in front of the fans – but that doesn’t give irate people a pass to racial abuse. Pools reacted well too. With their own players unhappy with what played out, chairman Raj Singh visited their homes on Sunday to talk through what happened. Then, their game against Chesterfield last Tuesday night was used to send out a message. The front of their programme and banners carried logos with ‘Love Pools Hate Racism’. The club also carried an interview with Mafuta, where he was able to put across how he felt that afternoon when he saw supporters of the club he represents abusing a fellow footballer for the colour of his skin. It would have been easy to shy away from it but Pools rightly gave him a platform. Effiong told The NLP: “You hear it and see it out of their mouths. Understand, the fans looked so angry. I’m thinking, ‘How can I make you that angry that you want to give me racial abuse?’ It wasn’t on and quite upsetting. Even their players were devastated by it. “We considered walking off. Our gaffer asked if we wanted to, their gaffer said they would support us if we wanted to. But we just said, ‘No, let’s get on with the game’.” Both Effiong and Mafuta feel it is vital to keep up the conversation. It is important their voices are heard. Action needs to be firm and strong to eradicate this scar on society and football. Non-League Day has been one of the great success stories of Non-League football since its inception by James Doe. A simple idea, but a really good one that encourages fans to get down to their local club during an international break each season. It’s a day that puts Non-League football up in lights for those who may not normally consider it. It shows people there are good games often only ten minutes away or so from their front doors. Clubs have run promotion offers for entry, organised special events at the ground, leagues have arranged groundhops and one club even had ferret racing one year! It’s a great opportunity to take along a debutant - we’re sure they will love it too.

The Suffolk Premier Cup was first played for in the 1958/59 season. The competition was launched to enable clubs with ‘professional’ players to play their full team as these players were not allowed to play in the Suffolk Senior Cup at that time. Not everyone was in favour of the competition and the County Chairman at the time felt it necessary to say “… an appeal is made to all concerned to give the competition a fair chance and do their utmost to make it work smoothly.” The first winners were Bury Town who went on to win the cup in seven out of its first eight seasons. The unluckiest team at this time was Lowestoft Town who lost four finals in a row, twice after replays. From 1974 to 1981 the final was played over two legs. During this period Lowestoft Town and Sudbury Town played in six finals each, four times against each other with honours even between them. In 1982 the final reverted to a one-off match (unless a replay was required) with Sudbury Town winning nine times in 12 seasons and Lowestoft Town repeating 4 consecutive defeats. The biggest win was in 2007 when Ipswich Town Reserves beat Leiston 8-0. The most goals in a final was nine which occurred three times during the two-leg final days. The last replay was in 1998 when Sudbury Wanderers had their only win, by 5-2 after a 0-0 draw. The last win in extra time was 2015 when Lowestoft Town won 2-1. The last win following a penalty shoot-out was in 2008 when Needham Market achieved their first ever Premier Cup win, winning 5-4 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra time. Most wins (17) have been by teams from Sudbury with AFC Sudbury winning three times, with pre-amalgamation Sudbury Wanderers winning once and Sudbury Town 13 times. However with 13 wins apiece both Bury Town and Lowestoft Town only need one more to, arguably, claim the record. To confirm the dominance of these three clubs, together with their 43 wins they have also lost the final 34 times between them giving a total of 77 final appearances. All other teams have only managed 43 final appearances between them.

The ’Rovers’ history in brief

Haverhill Rovers were founded in 1886, but their beginnings are shrouded in some mystery. The club first started playing at Hamlet Croft in 1913; previously they played at Seven Acres, an area bordered on two sides by the old railway line and Wratting Road. They spent the 1908/09 season in the East Anglian League. Other clubs in that league at that time included Clacton Town and Halstead Town. At the start of the 1924/25 season Rovers joined the Essex & Suffolk Border League but, after finishing bottom at the end of the 1927/28 season, elected to leave that league. Eight years later, in the 1935/36 season, Rovers rejoined the Border League. In 1946/47, Rovers were runners up behind Colchester Casuals; however, the following year Rovers won not only the championship but also the Knock Out Cup, beating Brightlingsea United 1-0 in the final. In 1950/51 Rovers were runners up behind Stowmarket Town. In 1962/63 they won the league for the second time, retaining the title the following year, when they also won the Knock Out Cup again to record their second “double”. In 1964 Rovers joined the Eastern Counties League, finishing a creditable sixth in their first season and also winning the League Cup, defeating Stowmarket Town. The following year, Rovers again reached the final of the cup, but lost out to Lowestoft Town. Rovers finished in the bottom three every year from 1970 until 1977. In 1978, under the guidance of former player Roger Staples, Rovers were champions for the first and, so far, only time, pipping Great Yarmouth Town by one point. A crowd of 1,300, a record at the time, packed into Hamlet Croft to see the last game, the decider, against Chatteris Town. Unfortunately this proved to be a one off, as the following season saw them finish in the lower half of the table. After this the club made steady progress: 7th in 1989, 14th in 1990 and an excellent 4th in 1991, the first full season under manager Martin Murray. A glut of injuries at the start of 1991/92 meant a final placing of eighth. In 1988 Rovers reached the final of the League Cup for the fourth time, losing to Braintree Town. In national competitions Rovers have never reached the first round of the FA Cup, but reached the 6th Round (Quarter Finals) of the FA Vase in 1986/87, losing 3-1 at home to Warrington Town. The attendance on that day was 1,578, which broke the previous record attendance. The club has never won the Suffolk Premier Cup, losing in the final twice, in 1965/66 2-1 to Bury Town and in 1990/91 3-2 to Stowmarket Town. They have lifted the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup three times. Rovers won the East Anglian Cup in 1990/91, beating Eynesbury Rovers 2-1 at Eynesbury in the final. Season 1995/96 saw Rovers relegated for the first time in their long history, but this disappointment was sweetened by winning the Suffolk Senior Cup for the first time (at Portman Road) at the end of the 1996/97 season. They were also defeated finalists in the Jewson League Cup, losing 2-0 at Harwich & Parkeston. 1997 saw Rovers win the Suffolk Senior Cup after they defeated Ipswich Wanderers 4-1 at Portman Road. They are also the only team to have lifted the First Division Knock Out Trophy three times (2-1 after extra time against Needham Market in 2001, 2-0 against Kirkley in 2004 and 3-1 against Saffron Walden Town in 2007). An excellent run in the FA Cup three seasons ago for Rovers included their best result in the past few years when, in the Second Round Qualifying in front of 504 spectators, they defeated Eastbourne Borough 1-0 on 30th September. Eastbourne were in the Conference South at the time, a huge four divisions above Rovers, but a goal by striker Paul Shaw three minutes into added time at the end of the game was enough to see them through and invoke a roar that was heard all around the town. This was then followed two rounds later with Aldershot Town, who were in the Conference, coming to the Croft in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round.
