Quanah & Cynthia Ann Parker: The History and the Legend e story of Quanah and Cynthia Ann Parker is one of love and hate, freedom and captivity, joy and sorrow. And it began with a typical colonial family’s quest for a better life. Like many early American settlers, Elder John Parker, a Revolutionary War veteran and Baptist minister, constantly felt the pull to blaze the trail into the West, spreading the word of God along the way. He led his family of 13 children and their descendants to Virginia, Georgia and Tennessee before coming to Illinois, where they were among the rst white settlers of what is now Coles County, arriving in c. 1824. e Parkers were inuential in colonizing the region, building the rst mill, forming churches and organizing government. One of Elder John’s many grandchildren was Cynthia Ann Parker, who was born c. -

Chiricahuas Present a Verdant, Forested Island in a Sea of Desert
Rising steeply from the dry grasslands of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, the Chiricahuas present a verdant, forested island in a sea of desert. Many species of trees, shrubs, and flowering herbs clothe steep canyon walls. Shady glens, alive with birds, are sheltered by rows of strange massive spires, turrets, and battlements in this fascinating wonderland of rocks. Story of the rocks-What geological forces created these striking and peculiar pinnacles and balanced rocks? Geolo- gists explain that millions of years ago volcanic activity was extensive throughout this region. A series of explosive eruptions, alternating with periods of inactivity, covered the area with layers of white-hot volcanic ash that welded into rock. Because the eruptions varied in magnitude, the deposits were of different thicknesses. Finally, the eruptions ceased, followed by movements in the earth's crust which slowly lifted and tilted great rock masses to form mountains. The stresses responsible for the movements caused a definite pattern of cracks. Along the vertical cracks and planes of horizontal weakness, ero- sion by weathering and running water began its persistent work. Cracks were widened to form fissures; and fissures grew to breaches. At the same time, under-cutting slowly took place. Gradually the lava masses were cut by millions of ero- sional channels into blocks of myriad sizes and shapes, to be further sculptured by the elements. Shallow canyons became deeper and more rugged as time passed. Weathered rock formed soil, which collected in pockets; and plants thus gained a foothold. Erosion is still going on slowly and persistently among the great pillared cliffs of the monument. -

Stereotyping of Native Americans can be categorized under three major themes: (1) the history of Native Americans compressed and portrayed under a single period of time;(2) Native cultures interpreted through white values; and (3) the grouping of the more than 600 different Native American societies under one general category. Because of its ability to present moving images, film played a major role in perpetuating the stereotypes of the Native Americans as riding horses, screaming, killing, and scalping people. Film, like any other form of art, reflects the culture of the society and at the same time, contributes to that culture; it embodies the society's values, beliefs, and social structure and assists in transmitting culture to mass audiences. Myths and stereotypes about Native Americans are alive today because television and film, as media with mass appeal, perpetuated misconceptions. Portraits TOC KIOWA: AN EMERGENT PEOPLE Nancy P. Hickerson …this is how it was: The Kiowas came one by one into the world through a hollow log. There were many more than now, but not all of them got out. There was a woman whose body was swollen up with child, and she got stuck in the log. After that, no one could get through, and that is why the Kiowas are a small tribe in number….1 n midsummer of the year 1805, the expedition led by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark made camp on Ithe Missouri River some miles above its junction with the Platte. Nearby were the villages of the Otoes and Pawnees. Farther to the west, near the headwaters of the Platte, they learned of a number of nomadic tribes including the “Kiawa.”2 This was the first official notice given to a people who would, in future decades, become familiar to the soldiers, trappers, and settlers of the American fron- tier as the Kiowa. Like the neighboring Arapahoes, Crows, and Cheyennes, the Kiowas were equestrian (horse-riding) hunters who followed the great herds of buffalo. Their needs in food, containers, clothing, and housing were, in large part, supplied directly from the hunt. Horses, which had been introduced by Spanish colonizers, were essential to the life of the Plains Indians, and the Kiowas were famous for the size of their herds. They counted their wealth in horses, and also traded them to other groups, both Indian and non-Indian, even the invading Americans. Within a few decades of the Lewis and Clark expedition, aggres- sive white hunters all but exterminated the buffaloes, and the U.S. -

Wink: An Online Journal 1 Film Review: Mackenzie Halfman Instructor: Tracy Helixon Dances with Wolves It is difficult to imagine what it would be like to watch an entire people and their way of life vanish within a lifetime. It is even harder to imagine being a part of that culture, knowing only a certain amount of time is left before everything previously known to that lifestyle is terminated. This predicament comes face to face with the characters in Dances with Wolves, an outstanding movie based on the unjust expulsion of the Sioux plains’ Indians. Directed by and starring Kevin Costner, the story follows Civil War-era soldier John Dunbar deep into the American Frontier and the lives of the people who once occupied it. The film’s unforgettable story, outstanding cast, and beautiful soundtrack make it both enjoyable and moving. Perhaps the most distinguishing of all features in the film is its story. Both novel and screenplay written by Michael Blake, Dances with Wolves allows viewers a better understanding of the Sioux. The story, through many carefully crafted segments of daily lives and personal conundrums, gets the audience to care deeply about the characters. The film begins by following Kevin Costner’s character John Dunbar, who self assigns himself to an abandoned soldier post in the American Frontier. He is alone with his horse Cisco for various scenes in the movie, introducing viewers to his habits and narrated thoughts. One scene shows Dunbar shortly after having encountered a Sioux member for the first time. Writing in his journal, his thoughts become narrated.
