Text of the 150th Anniversary Proclamation by Mayor Nic Hunter

WHEREAS, recorded Catholic missionary activity began in the Old Imperial Calcasieu area in the early 1850’s; and WHEREAS, the first Catholic mission chapel was built in 1858 and dedicated to Saint Francis de Sales on Septem- ber 26, 1858; and WHEREAS, on December 8, 1869, St. Francis de Sales Parish was established covering all of Old Imperial Cal- casieu; and WHEREAS, after sustaining heavy damage in the hurricane of August 22, 1879 a new church was constructed and the new edifice was given her name – Church of the Immaculate Conception, and its completion was realized on October 2, 1881; and WHEREAS, in the Great Fire of April 23, 1910, over seven city blocks were destroyed including the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Parish Courthouse and City Hall and; cleanup operations, planning and rebuilding and immediately temporary buildings utilized to continue the work of the church and schools; and; and WHEREAS, On December 18, 1913 beautiful new Church of the Immaculate Conception was formally dedicated; and WHEREAS, On December 27, 1923 a solemn consecration of the Church of the Immaculate Conception was per- formed; and WHEREAS, on April 25, 1980 the Church of the Immaculate Conception became the Cathedral for the newly estab- lished Diocese of Lake Charles; and WHEREAS, on August 22, 2013, the 100th anniversary of the rebuilding of the Church of the Immaculate Concep- tion after the Great Fire of 1913, the statue of the Virgin Mary located above the high altar was crowned, being only
