FROM SILVER TO SKIS: A HISTORY OF ALTA, UTAH, AND LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, 1847-1966 by Anthony Will Bowman A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in History UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY Logan, Utah 1967 PREFACE My interest in Alta, Utah, as a thesis topic was aroused during the winter of 1964-65, when I lived and worked at the ski resort as a ski pa- trolman . Since the history of the canyon and that of Alta are interwoven to such an inextricable extent, I have chosen to treat them together as comprising one unit of study. A subject which is a "living issue" and not a "historical corpse" upon which the historian may carve and dissect, presents a special prob- lem of evaluation.
