Tammi Brazee: EXPOSING THE VINTAGE SNEAKY MARMOT JOURNEYS On view through July 5 – August 29, 2014 FOOTE GALLERY May 11, 2014 Let historic postcards from the Loveland Museum/ GREEN ROOM Gallery collection take you back in time on a tour At times, the beliefs or perceptions that we have about through our beautiful state. As part of this exhibit, the world or ourselves don’t serve us well. This series reproductions of historic postcards will be available investigates many versions of self-deception. A sneaky for visitors to write, address, and mail directly marmot appears in many of the paintings, embodying from the gallery. Experience the fun of pre-internet the tendency to be misled by our perceptions communication! and beliefs, many of which are formed in childhood and are carried into adulthood where they often function below our conscious awareness. These paintings are twisted versions of grown-up dramas that are humorous on the surface but that sometimes have a dark and insidious underbelly. ~ Tammi Brazee Upcoming Art Exhibits 9 CAST AND CREW The Sculpture and Film of Jerry Barrish June 28 – September 14, 2014 Members Only Opening Reception: Thursday, June 26, 6 – 8 pm Exhibit Admission: $5, free for Museum members (includes admission to the Foundations exhibition) Noon tours every Friday free with admission EXHIBIT FREE DAYS: Friday, July 18; Thursday, August 21; Wednesday, September 10 One could be forgiven for thinking Barrish’s studio was a junkyard. It’s filled with abandoned plastic materials gathered from recycling centers, scrap yards, and the beach near his home in Pacifica, California. But in an act of alchemy, Barrish transforms these alternative materials into assemblage sculptures, often of musicians and animals, noted for their nuanced sense of character, gesture, and narrative. Within this exhibition, Barrish seamlessly merges his two passions: film and sculpture, with his sculptures taking the roles of live actors. Through modernist notions of simplicity, and a film narrative that builds upon each figure’s inherent characterizations, Barrish’s films offer a contemporary comment upon society and popular culture. Jerry Barrish’s art gives life to otherwise discarded material. His films give vitality to seemingly static sculptures. Taken together, they uncover a level of artistic creativity that heightens the communicative potential of sculpture and suggests further analyses of our preconceived versions of reality. Visual art, particularly sculpture, is a foundation upon which the high quality of life in Loveland is built. Foundations: A Journey Through American Sculpture will more fully contextualize Loveland’s artistic heritage within the history of art, enhance community pride, provide educational opportunities, and bring visitors to Loveland for a unique creative experience.

This exhibition will serve to introduce this project to the community and lay the foundation for its long-term objectives. Since this project began, the Visual Arts Commission has acquired 11 pieces of sculpture with works by Frederick MacMonnies, Louise Nevelson, Reuben Nakian, Chaim Gross, Elizabeth Catlett, William Zorach, George Rickey, George Segal, Richard Hunt, Alexander Phimister Proctor, and Herbert Ferber. This preview exhibition will show these artworks alongside additional information to further explore each artist’s contributions to visual culture.

Indian on Horseback by Alexander Phimister Proctor (photo by Mel Shockner) Upcoming Art Exhibits 11 FIGURE AND FORM: LOVELAND WILD LIFE SESSIONS May 31 – July 27, 2014 The love of the figure comes through in this group exhibit, juried by artist Filipe Echevarria. Following the long tradition of figure drawing, this Loveland group of artists meets regularly to refine their skills in rendering imagery from life. Including both paintings and drawings, this exhibit explores time-honored techniques of artistic training and is a celebration of beauty within the human form. Artists in this exhibit include George Coll, Venetia Ellis, Steve Engeman, Mary Giacomini, Danna Hildebrand, Suzi Holland, Dave Holman, Amy Lewark, and Victoria Lisi. In 2007, weekly meetings with live nude models began at a local studio in order to provide artists with the opportunity for regular figure study. During these sessions, the model holds a “long pose” for three hours, with occasional breaks, and the artists use various media including graphite, charcoal, pastel, and oil in the “alla prima” (fresh) style. Strong lighting exposes otherwise unseen features, yielding life in hidden places. These are The Wild Life Sessions.

HISTORY AS ART: IN THREE PARTS Part One:The Colorado Flood of 2013 Artwork by Tedi Jensen and Carrie Johansing

August 9 – September 28, 2014 Public opening reception Friday, August 8, 6 – 8 pm

Gallery talk with Tedi Jensen and Carrie Johansing: Thursday, August 28, 5:30 pm

GREEN ROOM Interpreting historical objects through the use of art can promote engagement with creative and critical thinking. An artistic approach to history helps clarify understanding of how and why certain events happened by emphasizing what people thought about situations rather than just what they did in response. Art may be characterized in terms of its reflection of life, expression, communication of emotion, or other qualities. This brings another dimension to history because art is, at its most basic, a subjective statement in which the artist produces a powerful experience that is then shared between themselves and the viewer. Through artistic interpretation, unique facets of a historical object are unveiled, adding meaning both on an individual level and within a cultural context.

Using an object from Loveland Museum/Gallery’s historical collection, artists will interpret the object through their artwork. This project will be presented three times throughout 2014, with different historic objects as inspiration, and encompassing many different artistic mediums.

History as Art: Part One will remember the Colorado flood of 2013 through aerial photos of the devastation.Tedi Jensen’s paintings merge this tragic imagery with the spellbinding beauty of her abstract forms. Her aerial views provide an extraordinary bird’s eye observation of a place where we are confronted with a new revelation about our surroundings. Carrie Johansing’s sculptures reflect a visceral response to the tragedy with textural evocations that balance the sometimes fearsome imagery of earth and water, as it ebbs and flows, unchecked and uncharted. This exhibit will recognize the historic importance of the flood event upon our communal consciousness and the reverberations that mark our continually changing relationship with nature and the environment.

SPONSORED BY: 20 Art in Public Places - News LOVELAND HIGH PLAINS ART COUNCIL DONATIONS The Loveland High Plains Arts Council (LHPAC) continues their history of generous contributions to our City with the donation of five new sculptures for Benson Sculpture Park. Each fall, the LHPAC Board seeks applications from artists wishing to place their artwork within this community treasure. Each submission is discussed individually, details and concerns are addressed, and fabrication information is analyzed. This process has proven highly effective and helps ensure Loveland maintains its reputation as a leading arts community.

Congratulations to this year’s honored artists: Tree by Jane DeDecker, Painting Music by Angela De la Vega, Seed Pod Cairn by Tom Herzog, Cultural Pedestrians by Sue Quinlan, and Rising Rainbow by David Turner. A formal dedication will be held in July.

EQUINOX BY DOUG ERION, JACK KREUTZER, AND DOUG RUTLEDGE (TEAM LOVELAND EQUINOX) The Equinox team held three youth workshops in February 2014, sharing the process undertaken for large public art projects with elementary, middle and high school age students. Students created their own iconic images that spoke of Loveland’s industry, sense of community, and history.

Equinox will soon enter into the CDOT permit process, and later, the fabrication process for this 50′ x 100′ steel sculpture depicting ledger horses, the railway, and other iconic Loveland imagery. The Loveland Equinox team is hoping to install the piece in fall 2014. Art in Public Places - TAAP 21 THE ART ADVOCACY PROJECT – 2D (TAAP)

TAAP 2D entered its second year of display at the Loveland Public Library and is on view in the Main Galleria. Most of the artwork featured in the 2014 display is available for purchase. This year’s featured artists are:

Julie Bender, Seeing is Believing Jim Digby, Milner-Schwarz House Leann Harding, Front Range Home, circa 2013 A.D. India Ison, Inari Fran Judd, One Sharles, The Storyteller

“This color saturated, textured painting explores the fantasy and imaginative world of oral story telling from tribal beginnings to present day. It could be an enraptured child caught up in the tale or the teller. They both share the colorful visions created” – Sharles, TAAP 2D Artist

Despite serious attempts to attend various academic art schools, those intentions never seemed to be a realistic option. In time, art schools no longer seemed necessary, as Sharles has The Storyteller by Sharles become a successful, self-taught artist/sculptor, learning skills the hard way, by observation, and trial and error. Sharles is also a member of the Society of Animal Artists.

THE ART ADVOCACY PROJECT – 3D (TAAP)

New sculptures will be installed in downtown Loveland during the first week in June as part of The Art Advocacy Project 2014. Each year, this highly visible curbside exhibition of Colorado sculptors delights downtown visitors. A subcommittee of the Visual Arts Commission and Loveland residents met in April to determine the finalists. The selection this year will be very strong, as the program expanded to a new location to showcase monumental works at the northwest corner of Lincoln Avenue and Third Street.

TRANSFORMATIONS PROJECT

Five painters will be transforming electrical utility cabinets again this summer. While the jury will determine the finalists in early May, painting won’t begin until the weather allows in mid-late June. Utility box locations can be seen on the Art in Public Places website at www.cityofloveland.org/publicart.

UPCOMING INSTALLATIONS Several of our multi-year projects will be coming to fruition this summer! Interconnections by Andy Dufford, a large-scale abstract stone sculpture signifying the new entryway into the Service Center, is expected to be installed in August.

Three public art elements depicting westward expansion by artist Robert Tully will be installed at the new Mehaffey Park in late summer/early fall.

Installation of the patio and art bench for the new Fire Station #2 site will take place during the summer months by Ken Williams of Ken Williams’ Studio.

COMMISSIONER HIGHLIGHT

I was interested in serving on the commission because I feel it is important to contribute, and give back to the community that I care so much for. Specifically, regarding the VAC, because of my great appreciation of the artists and their work. I believe the VAC contributes to the intangible appreciation and quality of life that the City of Loveland offers, and I am honored to be a part of the Commission. ~ Charlie Jackson, VAC Commissioner
