6 Elyria Catholic High School Magazine ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Alaysa Ruiz ’l2 BY ABIGAIL SHAW ’20

Elyria Catholic’s focus for the 2019 and 2020 school year is “Leaving Your Print,” which is centered around the idea of making an impact on the community. Sometimes making an impact on the community can seem like a daunting task, but it can truly be in the small duties that impact people’s lives that can change the community. Alaysa Ruiz, a graduate of the Class of 2012, is the perfect role model to look to for an example of a person who leaves their print on the community.

Alaysa began leaving her print at Elyria Catholic, where she was involved in multiple clubs like peer ministry, students against destructive decisions, drama club, and cheerleading. Alaysa’s impact on the community began on October 8, 2018, after using photography as an artistic and emotional outlet by photographing her children. She then started her photography business, ARuiz Photography.

Alaysa speaks on how photography impacts people saying, “Photos are a skill of art, they’re captivating. They grab you, and hold you still in that moment forever. A moment in time you’ll never get back.”

Seeing photography as not only a creative outlet, but one that Alaysa feels gives her a chance to be a part of others’ lives at their most vulnerable times; this is why she mainly takes photographs of weddings and families.

On her website, Alaysa writes about photography saying, “I find beauty in others and the stories they live to tell. Photography is more than a career for me, but my life.”

Alaysa attributes Elyria Catholic with teaching her skills like perseverance, sociability, and being genuine to yourself. Alaysa values the Catholic education that she received from St. Jude and Elyria Catholic, and works hard to make sure her kids receive that same education.

In addition to photography, Alaysa has three young children who inspired her love for photography, and a loving husband, Andrew ’12, whom she met at Elyria Catholic, who works at the Cleveland Clinic.

Alaysa speaks on why photography is important to her and how it affects those around her saying, “Holding those moments for those around me, to cherish and love forever.”

“Photos are a skill of art, they’re captivating. They grab you, and hold you still in that moment forever. It’s a moment in time you’ll never get back.”

“Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.” I have tried to live by that quote, and my hope is that my students will do so as well.

This year’s school theme at Elyria Catholic is “Leaving Your Print.” Many alumni from EC have done this in a variety of ways around the world. Jeff Yungman is one who stands out.

Jeff Yungman graduated from EC in the class of 1969. He says that his interest in helping others who are not heard in the world began during his days at Elyria Catholic. As a young teenager, Jeff felt unheard himself in different aspects of his life.

After graduating from The Ohio State University with a major in sociology in 1973, Jeff’s post graduate jobs put him on a path to where he is today. From being a dishwasher straight out of school, to being a nursing assistant in the Ohio State Hospital, to becoming a New Orleans police office in 1976, Jeff went back to school to earn a Masters in Social Work and a Masters in Public Health from Tulane University in 1980. Working as an investigator and a supervisor, Jeff moved into the position as Program Director at Covenant House. He also worked as a social worker in two middle schools.

Continuing on life’s journey, Jeff made his way to South Carolina where he became the Program Director at the Carolina Youth Development Center and then later becoming the Clinical Director of Crisis Ministries Homeless Shelter, which is now known as One80 Place. Jeff quickly learned that these individuals desperately needed legal services. Seeing a need and wanting to fill that need, Jeff, at age 53, enrolled in the Charleston School of Law. It was not an easy task, working at Crisis Ministries during the day, attending law school at night, and having a family with his wife and three children. Upon passing the bar in 2008, he became the director of the Crisis Ministries Homeless Justice Project at One80 Place. To Jeff continually works to make systemic changes for veteran’s his knowledge One80 Place is the only homeless shelter in the treatment court, veteran’s child support initiative, and homeless country employing a full-time lawyer to provide free legal service for court. “Make a career of humanity. 8 Elyria Catholic High School Magazine ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Hal Minnich ’53 BY JACOB WALTHER ’21

Throughout the years, many students have come and gone through the doors of Elyria Catholic High School. Many have gone their own way, but there is one special man who has returned to EC after his graduation in 1953.

Hal Minnich is no stranger to Elyria Catholic High School. Hal’s graduating class was just the second class to fill the hallways of the then Elyria Catholic District High School. He says that he has many memories from high school, but one of the fondest is his time playing sports with his buddies.

He states that one time while he was tossing a football with his friends, one of them ran for a long throw, and as he went to make the catch, he fell into an eight foot sewer. (He recalls that no one was seriously injured!) It was moments like these for Hal that allowed him to discover what he wanted to do with his life….which is to give back to his community. After graduating from EC, Hal sought unique careers instead of going to college. Some of his favorite experiences as an early adult were going to barber school, working for Ridge Tool, and spending a year in Korea. Even through all of these experiences, Hal decided to come back to his alma mater and give back.

Hal is a founding member of Elyria Catholic Dad’s Booster Club which started forty-four years ago. Since then, he has contributed to building the football, baseball, and soccer fields. He recalls putting up stadium lights around the football field because, without these lights, all games were pushed to Sunday afternoons. 18 Elyria Catholic High School Magazine PANTHER PRIDE NEWS Scholarships JAKOB HWANG SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED Another tradition began at this year’s May Crowning. Following our annual May Crowning we welcomed Dr. John Hwang, the father of Jakob Hwang ’18. This year Dr. Hwang presented the first ever Jakob Hwang Memorial Scholarship to junior Mackenzie Kemer. During his time at EC, Jakob shared his infectious smile, positive attitude, and complete trust and faith in God’s plan. May Crowning just seemed the perfect time to award this scholarship in Jakob’s name.

SCOTT HOLLAND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This year following our Homecoming Mass, Randy and Jeanne Holland presented the Scott Holland Memorial Scholarship Award to juniors Faith Belza and Aidan Timko. Much like Scott Holland ’02, both Faith and Aidan have been recognized as students who are passionate and kind to others through their involvement in academics, athletics and extracurriculars. Scott’s greatest contribution was how he lived his life to the fullest, pursued his passions, and showed overwhelming kindness to everyone in his life. It is the family’s hope that this scholarship will assist Elyria Catholic students in achieving their passions in life and promoting kindness by keeping Scott’s spirit alive.
