Oh, do we get letters! All kinds of letters, all sizes of letters! Some are dealt with easily (subscription renewals, questions about duplicate magazines received, address changes); some take more thought (ar- ticles and poems submitted); some re- quire lengthy answers. Well, what a barrage has crossed our desks this spring! First of all, as Stan discusses in "Meanderings," the Sketchpad reference to Dubuque, Iowa brought several responses from offend- ed readers. As Robert Black, the author, answered the letters, he stated that his point was that the wrong kind of caller had been hired; he meant no slur upon the Dubuque area or the dancers in the clubs there. In March "Bread Line," we printed suggestions for flavoring popcorn. Pop- APP corn is a nutritious low-calorie snack, rss- — and Co-ed, who is perennially on a diet, ideas on paper at one time. Two-step by Betty & Clancy Mueller • 4 40th Anniversary Year American Squaredance, May 1985 In olden days, this month started with a Maypole dance and celebration of spring. This year, many clubs are ending a dance BY-LINE season, electing new officers and celebra- tion graduations. Jo Jan Nunley and Bev \'1\1 Warner, both authors who have con- tributed before, have good tips on these subjects. Maggie Wade's cartoon and Mary Duquin's teaching principles deal with aspects of calling (and cueing). The latter is concerned again in Brian Bassett's (Brian is co-owner and editor of Round Dancer magazine) article on teaching the vine. Ida Reilinger lets her fancy roam free through nursery rhymes for a clever poem on rounds. Bill Barr suggests several themes for enhancing a club program, while Myrtis Litman describes the traditional dancing again being revived at Michigan's Lovett Hall. Writing stints by the editors this month were both sad and joyous. Obituaries of Ralph Page and Dorothy Shaw show what a loss these two deaths mean to the square dance world. On the other hand, we wrote with a feeling of great friendship, the story on Doc and Peg Tirrell, a couple deserving of nationwide thanks and appreciation for their many contributions to the activity. May you enjoy our May gift to you! ADVERTISERS LISTING For extra convenience to readers, we are listing our advertisers (space ads only) and numbering each.
