Editor’s Comments: With the harsh economic conditions set to continue, if not get worse, the administration of Jarvis Rail Ltd. mentioned last month, has unfortunately taken its subsidiary Fastline Freight down with it (see Wagon Corner). This also follows the recent demise of Advenza Freight. It waits to be seen where the now stored FF locos will end up. The recently re-liveried 66434 leased from DRS has gone straight back to them.

So in this topsy world and without wishing to grind any particular axe it must also be ironic to our older members that yet another part of British transport infrastructure has succumbed to the Germans economic might. State owned Deutsche Bahn has bought Arriva and is now the parent company or has a share behind 6 rail operations in the UK. Its 3 arms being, DB Schenker with ex-EWS, DB Regio with Chiltern Railways, Wrexham & Shropshire and the Newcastle Metro and now DB Arriva with Arriva Train Wales and Cross Country. DB also owns many well known car marques.

Good news, the East London Line has re-opened following its conversion from third rail and with extensions due to follow over the coming months this will be a welcome addition to travel around the eastern side of London (see article).

As mentioned last month the final days for the slam door pair of EMUs working the Lymington branch is to be the 22nd/23rd May. Another service worth catching before it ends is the Workington – Maryport shuttle, due to end on 28th May. Also with the first Cl.172 DMUs now on test it won’t be long before they replace the Cl.150s working the Gospel Oak- Barking service and so precipitate a cascade of DMUs around the country this summer.

With a packed issue, reports on the AGM and the current scene mean nostalgia will return in next issue.

Finally for those desperate to know the final chapter in my Aberdeenshire winter...argh I hear you all sigh, the snow did arrive, with over a foot and driving blizzards, which wrecked Easter. In fact though short lived it was the worst of the winter. Power lines down everywhere, as in Northern Ireland. I was off for a couple of days, good job I have a generator for the freezer. House ok but car wasn’t so lucky this time as snow was heavy, being warmer and so much wetter, it wrecked my wipers...still waiting to get them fixed with yet more expense. Still I found some sun down south and one hot day at the AGM (see below), but got back to the cool and cloud whilst most of England was basking in glorious sun at the end of April. Still the daffs are still in full bloom and the usual 5 pairs of swallows have arrived to take up residence in my outbuildings.

AGM Report by Carl Watson: My first full AGM as Chairman was a very enjoyable event. Firstly I'd like to thank all the Officials who gave up their time to attend and ensure all the appropriate points were thoroughly covered. Secondly I'd like to thank those Members who made the journey to Kidderminster to support and contribute to the proceedings. I found the Member involvement most encouraging and very supportive, particularly of our recent Publications changes.

The AGM reported on a good but challenging year for the Society but with most of the problems now behind us and Publications going from strength to strength we are on course for another good year this year, where we can give more time to things other than Publications.

The Kidderminster Railway Museum was a new venue this year and we were very pleased with both the facilities and the organisation and I have written to them expressing my thanks on behalf of the Society for an excellent venue. (we were in the room behind the windows above the sign in the photo, with 12099)

The day was enhanced with excellent sunny weather and a trip on the Severn Valley Railway. As I've never visited the SVR before I had to take a ride to Bridgnorth and back behind GWR 5101 Class 2-6-2T 5164 and found it a real treat. 3

2-6-2T 5164 prepares to depart on the 14.20 service from Kidderminster Town to Bridgnorth carrying a number of ICRS grandees or was it ‘hooligans’…with a long journey north I waved them off though not sure anyone realized I was there or saw me behind the camera !!, ed.

East London Line by Mark Richards / Trevor Roots:

The East London Line (ELL) reopened as part of the on Tuesday 27th April 2010. The first passengers over the new line were carried on the 12.05 Dalston Junction to New Cross service, formed of new 4 car ‘CapitalStar’ 378154.

the first train with ‘headboard’ 378154 alongside 378146, Dalston Junction, 28 April 2010 Mark Richards

The ELL runs from New Cross Gate on the line between London Bridge and East Croydon and a separate short branch from New Cross on the Southeastern main line, under the River Thames to Dalston Junction in the north. The last tube trains ran on Saturday 22nd December 2007 and in the intervening period the line has been upgraded for use by the Overground and extended to a new station at Dalston Junction with additional new or reopened stations (north to south) at Haggerston, Hoxton and Shoreditch High Street north of the river. Other stations continuing south (north of the river) are Whitechapel (connection to Hammersmith & City and District UG lines), Shadwell (connection to DLR and alongside the line from Liverpool Street) and Wapping. South of the river are Rotherhithe, Canada Water (connection to UG Jubilee Line) and Surrey Quays. A new depot and signalling control centre has been built at New Cross Gate. Stabled stock can be seen, though through mesh screens, from the Southern main line.

The original station at Haggerston was closed in 1940 after being heavily damaged by bombing, so has not seen passenger services for seventy years! Just north of Shoreditch High Street (heading towards Dalston Junction) the ELL joins the original formation from Broad Street, which was closed in 1986. Shoreditch station was permanently closed in 2006 and Shoreditch High Street station is situated further north on the location of the former Bishopsgate Goods Yard. Dalston Junction is an underground station as can be seen from photo.

The preview service currently operates Mondays to Fridays from 07.00 to 20.00 with an 8 minute headway over the core section. Already the service seems to be well used offering useful connections with the underground at Whitechapel and Canada Water and with the DLR at Shadwell. Dalston Junction is a short walk from Dalston Kingsland station on the . New Cross Gate and New Cross are also only 10 mins apart on foot along New Cross Road.

From the May timetable, the next stage of Phase One will be opened with services extended southwards to Crystal Palace and West Croydon. Phase Two of the ELL will see the line extended from a junction at Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction via Peckham Rye and Wandsworth Road, replacing the existing services between London Victoria and London Bridge. A further extension is due to be opened in 2011 to Highbury & Islington providing a link with the existing North London Line. On completion of the ELL to Clapham Junction, London will have a complete orbital railway, though through journeys will only be possible by changing trains, but providing new opportunities for our hobby.

Uckfield, East Sussex by Trevor Roots: A new modular station building comprising ticket office, toilet, cafe and staff accommodation has been constructed at Uckfield Station to replace the small and totally inadequate ‘shack’ that stood there before for 19 years. The new building was opened on 16th March with the photos below, taken on 15th April, showing the much improved and smarter single line terminus.

Forest Hill by Trevor Roots: A new footbridge has been constructed across the 4 tracks of the London Bridge to East Croydon line so improving the previous lengthy 150m journey from one platform to the other by means of the tunnel, which required leaving and re-entering the station through ticket barriers each time. At the time of the photo on 13th April, it wasn’t yet in use, being barriered off. 9 Traffic & Traction News by John Barton

GOSPEL OAK STATION

Location: OS Map Ref: TQ282 856 Gospel Oak is on the North London Line (NLL) in the north London Borough of Camden at the south eastern edge of Hampstead Heath and is just under 2 miles north of Euston. It is also situated between the East Coast Main Line and the Midland Main Line.

ex-Slverlink liveried LO 150128 departing from platform 3 to Barking whilst new 378020 awaits departure to Richmond from platform 2, note the wrong line working due to line closure beyond for upgrading, with all services arriving and departing from platform 2,12 April 2010

Access: Rail: It lies on the NLL from Richmond to Stratford and is the terminal point of the line to Barking. Two underground stations are just over ½ mile distant, Tufnel Park and Kentish Town on the Northern Line, the latter is also an interchange for First Capital Connect services on the Midland Main Line. Road: The station is on the B518 Mansfield Road, the nearest main road being the A400 Kentish Town Road, which leads directly to Camden Town north of Euston. Bus: Bus route C11 serves the station.

Station Layout: The station is a junction between the lines mentioned above. The NLL swings around through the station from a westerly direction to a southerly direction whilst the Barking line heads of to the east, both lines crossing road bridges to the south and east of the station. There are 3 platforms high above the surrounding area accessible only via flights of stairs from the barriered entrance on Mansfield Road. A subway at street level connects the two stairways to platforms 1 and 2 on the NLL. Platform 3 is a terminal platform off the Barking line with a bufferstop at the western and being slightly more elevated than the NLL is accessed via a slight ramp. A tidy and pleasant shrubbery separates platforms 2 and 3. The NLL is electrified, the Barking line is not. The twin tracks of the Barking line, used

15 by passing freight north of platform 3 join the NLL at Gospel Oak Junction to the west of the station where an unusual utilitarian green signal box stands. A protecting signal to the westbound NLL track from the Barking line means that freights can come to a stand midway along platform 3.

eastbound FL 66591dragging 90044 past terminal platform 3, note the signal protecting the westbound NLL, 12 April 2010

Passenger Services: The two lines are operated by London Overground having taken them over from . The NLL has recently become the domain of new Cl.378/0 Capitalstar 3 car EMUs, which are to be strengthened to 4 cars later in the year. The Barking line is in the last few months of operation by a fleet of 6 Cl.150/1 DMUs, 150120/23/28/29/30/31. All the vehicles are based at Willesden Depot. The NLL has a 15 min service frequency in each direction though the line is currently closed east to Stratford whilst major upgrading is undertaken on platform lengthening and signalling. It should re-open on 1st June, but with a reduced service until May 2011. The Barking line has a half hourly off peak service using 3 units. Normally another Cl.150/1 is stabled at the bufferstop throughout the day and enters service towards the evening peak so that 4 of the 6 units will be seen in service. On the day I visited the other two units were on Willesden Depot. New Cl.172/0 DMUs will take over from the 150/1s in the summer so it is your last chance to see or ride these units in the London area.

DBS 66118 passing stabled LO 150120 AI 59001 ‘Yeoman Endeavour’ passing in platform 3 preparing to enter service westbound, note platform 3 track branching off 12 April 2010 and protecting catch points, 12 April 2010

Freight Traffic: One of the reasons to visit Gospel Oak is the frequency and variety of freight trains, which at the moment can only use the Barking line. However freight normally can be seen on both lines in the hands of Cls.37/57/59/66/70/86/90/92 from all companies. The FL Cl.86s & 90s are dragged by Cl.66s on the non electrified Barking line as far as Wembley.

16 Best Spotting / Photography Sites: To see everything then you ideally need to be at western end to avoid missing freights passing behind DMUs in platform 3. It is easy to move between platforms 2 and 3, but to get to platform 1 will keep you fit !!

For photography the alignment of the tracks is good for the sun for most of the day, particularly with the Barking line. With nothing on the NLL, I was able to concentrate on eastern end of platform 3 and could photograph freights in either direction. The only problem being when two DMUs are in platform 3, then it is difficult to photograph eastbound freights on the Barking line. Westbound freights are OK but only from the extreme eastern end of the platform. However when traffic returns to NLL you need to be on platform 2, but then westbound freights on the Barking line cannot be captured and eastbound freights only with zoom. If no DMUs are stabled then it looks like taking up position at western end of platform 3 will enable freights to photographed on both lines, though I’ve yet to test that theory.

92026 ‘Britten’ approaching from the west, FL 66502 ‘The Railway Magazine’ approaching from platform 1, which is currently being platform 2 from the west extended beyond the signal passing the unusual signal box 17 January 2009 10 April 2008

Facilities: There are shops in the surrounding area. There are no toilets on the station. There is a handy shelter between platforms 2 and 3 to escape any inclement weather but still see what is coming.

Eastleigh Works Report by Carl Watson

April 2010: 37087 collected 47841 and towed it to Barrow Hill for further work on 14th April. Two batches of ex-Fastline coal wagons have arrived for storage (see Wagon Corner). Riviera coaches TSO 5950 and RMB 1832 are in for repairs. DRS RK 80042 is back inside and work has restarted to return it to traffic. London Underground Inspection Saloon DM 45029 has arrived for replacement bogies to be fitted. SWT 444019 and 444013 have been in for Overhaul by Siemens. Preserved Class 108 DMU 54504 (56504) is now painted (in BR Green with small yellow warning panel) and work has started on 51933. The new Paint Shop is nearing completion in what used to be the Heavy Vehicle Repair shed. Various redundant London Underground vehicles have arrived for stripping, including: 3205, 3212,3305, 3509, 3523, 4205, 4212, 4312, 4330, 4523 plus a handful of others.

WAGON NEWS: The major shock was the unexpected demise of Jarvis Rail Ltd going into administration. Its subsidiary, Fastline Freight was therefore affected also and ceased trading on 31st March. Pending a sale of assets, all track machines are currently out of service, whilst leased IIA coal hoppers have put into store at Eastleigh and Long Marston (see below). The reason these are not being used is that with FLHH and DBS taking over the work, they are able to utilise their existing hopper fleets following the general downturn in coal traffic. FEA flats 643001-024 have also gone to DRS. The loco fleet is stored at various locations around the country. More freight for the Settle & Carlisle route as Colas Rail takes a Kronospan timber train on a diversion but hopes this could be a permanent route. Also Freightliner Heavy Haul has begun operation of aggregates from Neath to Leeds for Cemex. A new temporary use has been found for 4w open MEAs. A bulk ship ‘Newcastle’ started taking on water which was filled with caustic iron sulphate (FeSO4) and if you mix FeSO4 with sea water you get sulphuric acid so DB Schenker is using the MEA wagons to transport the chemicals to Grimsby by rail!!! The wagons had to have Hazchem stickers applied and the UN 3244 identification label for corrosive materials. More FCA container flats have been uprated to 75mph and recoded FYA.

WAGON REVIEW:

TTA 4wh Tank: These tanks were built in 1977 by the Standard Wagon Co. and constructed to the design code TU013A and used to carry Caustic Soda Liquor and so coded TUA. Fitted with Gloucester floating axles, they were originally hired by Tiger Rail to ATO Chemicals and ran from Ellesmere Port to Immingham. They were then transferred to English China Clay and re-coded TTA and were used as general purpose vehicles on clay and stone traffic. The number range was TRL70700 – TRL70727 and out of the 28 vehicles, none now exist on the network.

WAGON UPDATES to UK Rail Series No.3 UK Wagons 2010: Now released, it is intended to provide changes via this spot every month. In this way members can keep their copy as up to date as possible until the 2011 edition….nothing like planning ahead. It is known that various wagons reportedly withdrawn or missing from previous editions are still in service so if any member can provide information please let Scott know, contact details on page 2.

A number of YEA ‘Perch’ bogie flats have been converted, some to YRA to work with the Kirow tilting switch & crossing wagons and others rebuilt as YSAs to work with ballast cleaner track machines.

Light Rail & Metro News by Martin Hall & Trevor Roots

Edinburgh: More arguments have arisen concerning the late completion of the tram system like the Haymarket viaduct and the depot at Cogar. The first tram has been delivered and is on static display in Princes Street. It is thought that commissioning of the trams will be on the Croydon tram system.

Newcastle: Since the appointment of DB Regio to operate the Tyne & Wear Metro more money is now available to revitalise the metro system.

Birkenhead: The Wirral Tramway is to be just one part of a massive re-development in Birkenhead and the surrounding area and tourist attractions. The original tramway was one of the earliest tram systems in Europe when it was first constructed in 1860, but like all the tram systems in the UK was destroyed unlike those in mainland Europe which are now seeing much modernisation with many benefits to commuters and businesses.

Hastings East Hill Lift: Originally pened in 1903, this is one of two funicular railways on the Hastings seafront and has recently re-opened in March after being closed for repairs since 2007. With a 78% gradient it is now the steepest in the UK. The other Hastings funicular is the older (1891), shorter and less steep (33%) West Hill Lift, which runs almost entirely within a tunnel up through the cliff in the Old Town.

now in operation, the two cars are seen passing on the East Hill Lift, 9 April 2010

The Trans-Siberian Express – Part 2: As with Part 1, this article compliments previous ones in the January and February 2008 issues.

Ulan Ude: 5642km from Moscow. It was founded in 1668 as a military outpost. Its importance increased in 1949 when the Trans-Mongolian branch line to Ulan Bator (Outer Mongolia) and Beijing (China) was opened. Another local sightseeing tour with lunch and vodka provided. Before returning to the train, our guide told us that all of the food and drink had been paid for so it was ours to take back with us. The sound of clinking wine and vodka bottles on the way back suggested nothing was left !

The date now is 15th May and at around 08.30 we entered Outer Mongolia. But only after a long border check, on a stationary train, where we are not allowed to leave our cabins as our visas and passports are checked. Our haul from Ulan Ude was EPI 134 and it was replaced by a 2M62, which at Ulan Bator was detached from the train so fast it was gone before I got to see it! Yes you’ve guessed it, another sightseeing tour.

We passed 6 preserved locomotives, displayed by the line. I persuaded our guide to stop and reluctantly she did for 5 minutes. I got the numbers and some photographs before the tour continued (see photo on page 13, February 2008 issue of Tracks). Arrival back to Ulan Bator was in darkness but I saw our return haul which was 2M62M 028 to the border. Another long border control and as I had left Russia to go into Outer Mongolia, another entry visa was required. All of this happened in darkness so we slept until the knock on the door for our checks. Arriving back in Ulan Ude, I saw our return haul was 2T1OU 0282. The locomotive was changed and EP1 296 took over for the long eastward journey.

From the morning of the16th to the morning of the 19th May we travelled across the remotest regions of Siberia. The permafrost, vast distances, forbidding landscapes and harsh climate are a real challenge to human existence here. It was good to be on a warm comfortable train.

Belogorsk: 7873km from Moscow, EP1 011 took over. During the last 3 days the scenery was boring but the train and entertainment were fine. It was only to say I had done the route, otherwise I would have suggested detraining at Ulan Ude!

Vladivostok: 19th May, 9288km from Moscow. A city on the western shore of the Sea of Japan. This city was the headquarters of the Russian Pacific Fleet. Until recently it was closed to foreign visitors and even Russian citizens needed permits to visit there. It has records going back 4000 years and for most of that time it was part of China.

Plinthed on the platform is 2-10-0 YeA 3306 (see photo below). In 1991 this locomotive hauled the anniversary train commemorating the 1916 opening of the final section of the Trans-Siberian route

I was slightly amused at some of my fellow travellers who had upgraded on the return flight from Moscow (Russia) to London (England) as they felt this was a long journey, yet the Vladivostok to Moscow (Russia to Russia) was not considered as they felt a journey within the same country was not worth upgrading. For your information, Vladivostok to Moscow was 9 hours and Moscow to London was 4 hours!

I have been to Russia twice and despite the thorough border checks, once inside the country I was never questioned or felt under any threat whilst pursuing my hobby. I found the people very friendly.
