Background information and locality description

Costock C of E Primary School is a small rural primary school situated in the village of Costock, between and Loughborough. The school is situated on Main Street, which runs between Costock Village and .

The catchment area of the school includes the villages of and and a school bus provides transport for pupils from the villages to and from the school.

The proportion of pupils entitled to free school meals is below average, as is the number of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Almost all of the pupils are of White British heritage. The school is committed to achieving the ‘Healthy School’ Gold Status.

Extended opening times

The school is involved in the School Sports Coordinators project, which provides specialist coaches and a wide variety of sporting activities during the year. These clubs begin at the end of the school day and finish at approximately 4:30. The result of this is a number of children are collected later than the official end of the school day

Public/School Transport & Frequency The village is served by:

Description of Travel Issues

The following issues were captured from both the parents’ Baseline Survey (see Appendix 1), conducted January 2010, and, a residents’ survey conducted January 2010.

1. Speeding cars 2. Parking/mounting pavements. Some just to keep moving 3. Bus through the village is a hazard. Buses faster than 30mph 4. No traffic calming near the school 5. Roads too fast. Lives lost last year 6. Speed of cars along Main St. 7. School buses drive too fast (40mph in 30mph zone) 8. The A60 is not suitable for youngsters walking or cycling 9. Double Decker not suitable for country lanes 10. Only 3 pupils on school bus. Why don't more use it?

Resident’s issues:

11. Serious congestion at peak times, plus mid-day nursery activities. 12. Large school bus regularly has only 2/3 pupils. 13. Hazardous to exit drive at busy times. 14. Hazard for parents/children crossing between parked cars. 15. Cars overlapping driveways, preventing access/exit – Inconsiderate parents. 16. New housing development will presumably add to the problem 17. Speeding through the village.

Note : Issue 8 – Whilst the Steering Group agree with this observation, it is taken as a statement of fact for a busy “A” road. There is no realistic opportunity of changing the nature of the road. No further action

Future Developments:

There is a housing development close to completion (as at Feb 2010) that will result in approx 25 new houses. See map on page 4.

Monitoring and Reviewing Proposals

Jane Mellor will host the School Travel Plan Steering Group meeting in May 2010, to:

• Review any feedback from the consultation period for the submitted plan • Review progress of actions contained in the plan

A new parents survey will be conducted in July 2010 (and each subsequent July under Notts County Council guidelines). This will be instigated by Steve Stevenson (Notts CC Travel Plan Officer) or another member of that team.

An October 2010 Steering Group meeting will then:

• Review and compare travel habits with those of the baseline survey • Agree on any subsequent actions required • Review progress of existing actions contained in the plan • Consider any new developments in education and transport provision that affect travel modes
