Pines in the Arboretum

MOE Pines in the Arboretum Pines are probably the best known of the conifers native to The genus Pinus is divided into hard and soft pines based on the northern hemisphere. Native or Suitable Plants City of McCall The following list of plants is presented to assist the developer, business owner, or homeowner in selecting plants for landscaping. The list is by no means complete, but is a recommended selection of plants which are either native or have been successfully introduced to our area. Successful landscaping, however, requires much more than just the selection of plants. Unless you have some experience, it is suggested than you employ the services of a trained or otherwise experienced landscaper, arborist, or forester. For best results it is recommended that careful consideration be made in purchasing the plants from the local nurseries (i.e. Cascade, McCall, and New Meadows). Plants brought in from the Treasure Valley may not survive our local weather conditions, microsites, and higher elevations. Timing can also be a serious consideration as the plants may have already broken dormancy and can be damaged by our late frosts. Appendix B SELECTED IDAHO NATIVE PLANTS SUITABLE FOR VALLEY COUNTY GROWING CONDITIONS Trees & Shrubs Acer circinatum (Vine Maple). Shrub or small tree 15-20' tall, Pacific Northwest native. Bright scarlet-orange fall foliage. Excellent ornamental. Alnus incana (Mountain Alder). A large shrub, useful for mid to high elevation riparian plantings. Good plant for stream bank shelter and stabilization. Nitrogen fixing root system. Alnus sinuata (Sitka Alder). A shrub, 6-1 5' tall. Grows well on moist slopes or stream banks. Excellent shrub for erosion control and riparian restoration. Nitrogen fixing root system. Amelanchier alnifolia (Serviceberry). One of the earlier shrubs to blossom out in the spring. -

Watson2 INTRODUCTION Japanese White Pine creates a striking landscape element wherever it is used (Fig. 1). Often seen as a dense, conical form when young, Japanese White Pine develops into a 25 to 50-foot-tall, graceful, irregularly- shaped tree, with an equal or greater spread, and a broad, flattened canopy. The 1 to 2.5-inch-long needles are stiff and twisted, forming blue/green tufts of foliage at branch tips, and creating an overall fine texture to the tree’s silhouette. The brownish-red cones are one to four inches long and persist on the tree for six to seven years. GENERAL INFORMATION Scientific name: Pinus parviflora Figure 1. Young Japanese White Pine. Dwarf Conifers and Other Dwarf Ornamentals: Their Use in the Landscape Why Dwarf Conifers and Dwarf Ornamentals? Long lifespan in the garden Take up little space Management/Maintenance is done with both feet on the ground Many species live in pots 1 Attributes of dwarf conifers in containers They are easily transported from one part of the garden to another Evergreen forms provide much needed color/texture and form in the winter landscape. Some of the larger dwarfs end up bonsaiing themselves naturally in pots due to root restriction Once established, they require the moisture requirements of the rest of the garden Growing requirements: Light Full sun to half a day is required If only half a day you can choose between morning and afternoon. Note: With dwarf flowering ornamentals, they prefer more than half a day of sun. 2 Growing requirements: Water With permanent plantings in the garden, water twice a week for the first 4 to 6 weeks, after the initial time period, drop back to once a week. With pots and container gardening, water twice a week for the first 4 to 6 weeks and once a week thereafter through November 15 through the 30th. Note: containers will need to be checked for water needs throughout the winter. Growing requirements: Fertilization With dwarf conifers, they can go without fertilizer every other year. Application is early April: soil has to warm up so the fertilizer is used. Use an organic fertilizer like Hollytone. With all other dwarf ornamentals, feed in early April, Hollytone or Plant tone for example. -

Generally, warmer temperatures advance flowering onset. The effect of climate warming on flowering onset is more pro- nounced in spring because the difference between atmospheric and water tempera- tures creates more rapid convection than in other seasons. We analyzed the correlation between 73 species of spring woody plants in Hongneung Arboretum in Seoul, South Korea and the spring minimum temperature and average precipita- tion over the past 50 years (1968–2018). The spring minimum temperature and average precipitation have increased over the past 50 years, resulting in the advance of the first flowing date (FFD) in all 73 species by 8.5 days on average. A compar- ison of FFD changes over time by dividing the survey period into three time periods confirmed the advance of the FFD in 50 species (68% of investigated species) by 11.1 days on average in both Period 2 (1999–2008) and Period 3 (2009–2018) rela- tive to Period 1 (1968–1975). -
